treeduck
Report: Dolphins cutting LB Philip Wheeler The Dolphins are parting ways with one of their major free agent signings of 2013. The club will cut linebacker Philip Wheeler, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. Per ESPN, Wheeler will be designated a post-June 1 cut. The 30-year-old Wheeler started 4-of-15 games in which he played last season, notching 46 tackles. According to NFLPA data, Wheeler was set to make $2.9 million in salary in 2015 and $4.9 million in salary in 2016 and 2017. Given his role and compensation, his departure isn’t a major surprise. The Wheeler signing came during Miami’s aggressive free agent push two offseasons ago under then-G.M. Jeff Ireland. However, the Dolphins have gone .500 the last two seasons and have not made the postseason since 2008.
treeduck
Dolphins to dump Dannell Ellerbe, too It’s out with the old as the Dolphins prepare to come in with the Suh. (I know it’s lame. But I couldn’t resist. And I admit I’m generally lame. Which probably doesn’t make it any better.) Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins plan to release linebacker Dannell Ellerbe. One of the high-profile signings for the Dolphins in free agency two years ago, Ellerbe came from the Ravens with a five-year, $35 million deal. His cap number for 2015 is due to climb to $9.85 million, fueled by a base salary of $8.425 million. Salguero notes that Ellerbe will be the latest member of the 2013 free-agent class to hit the road, joining receiver Brian Hartline (who re-signed for big money), linebacker Philip Wheeler, receiver Brandon Gibson, and receiver Mike Wallace, who is expected to be traded or cut unless he takes a pay cut. Former G.M. Jeff Ireland deliberately kept the cap numbers low in 2013 as he tried to load up with veterans and stave off termination. It didn’t work. Now, G.M. Dennis Hickey and executive V.P. of football operations Mike Tannenbaum are cleaning up the mess, one overpriced veteran at a time.

In 5 years he's shown flashes, he has 9 interceptions but he never looked like a starting corner, plus he's injury prone. A very poor 1st round pick. Let's put it this way the Saints secondary sucked last year and it wasn't Keenan Lewis' fault opposing QB's didn't need to target him.

Jason La CanforaVerified account@JasonLaCanforaLook for Suh deal to be massive. I keep hearing$17M/year and $60M-plus guaranteed. If he doesn't land in Miami won't be for lack of effort

That's just too much for a player at any position other than QB, with only a possible exception for JJ Watt...

laughedatbytime
Facepalmingly stupid. The Miami Herald had characterized the Dolphins as "confident" they would sign Suh, primarily because owner Stephen Ross was determined to land the big prize of the 2015 free-agency class. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12444126/ndamukong-suh-sign-6-year-114-million-deal-miami-dolphins

Remember that defensive free agent signing by the Redskins that didn't pan out in anyway shape or form for them. The HEAT down here will Suhck the life out of him. I would agree he won't suck to that extent but yes to tie up that much money on one player who is not a QB is not wise. IMO
