"The actor Frank Thornton, who has died aged 92, had a flair for comedy derived from the subtle craftsmanship of classical stage work. However, he will be best remembered for his longstanding characters in two popular BBC television comedy series – the sniffily priggish Captain Peacock in Are You Being Served? and the pompous retired policeman Herbert "Truly" Truelove, in Roy Clarke's Last of the Summer Wine."

I remember watching him in Are You Being Served and Last Of The Summer Wine. Admittedly, what I saw were reruns, but I did see a lot of them! They were good shows. :rose: Frank Thornton... :rose:

Mr. Cuthbert Rumbold: Captain Peacock?

Captain Peacock: Yes, Sir.

Mr. Cuthbert Rumbold: Can I have a word?

Captain Peacock: Certainly, Sir.

Mr. Cuthbert Rumbold: What is that?

Captain Peacock: A cup of tea, Sir.

Mr. Cuthbert Rumbold: I do not expect to find you of all people drinking tea in the department. The canteen is the place for that sort of thing.

Captain Peacock: I got it from the cleaner, Sir.

Mr. Cuthbert Rumbold: And they are paid to clean the place, not bring you tea.

Captain Peacock: You misunderstand me, Sir. I took it away from them, at the same time complaining about the mess that the old bags were making.

Mr. Cuthbert Rumbold: I don't think you should refer to the cleaning staff as Old Bags, Captain Peacock.

It was corny and, with hindsight, cringeworthily sexist but I bet I watched it every week.

That's too bad. :( My thoughts go out to him and his family. I always enjoyed Captain Peacock. Yes, the humour could be rather predictable but the acting and writing were consistently good over it's very lengthy run. I always liked Mrs. Slokum's hair and her constant references to her pussy...meaning her cat, of course. What did you think she meant? And, Captain Peacock always played it as the double entendre it was meant to be.

RIP, Mr Thornton. You made me laugh for many years. :rose:
