Were they messing with us all along?

So much hype over the radio edit slated for tomorrow. And much moaning and groaning from Rush fans who wanted the WHOLE 7'21" NOW. Not April 25th, but now. Oh sure, we'll take the radio edit if we have to. But we are not happy about it.

One day early. . .we get a legitimate preview of the whole damn song. Not that I am complaining ONE BIT, mind you.

Did Roadrunner change their plans last minute after the 30 sec clip generated so much buzz in the Rush community?

Or did they plan it this way all along?

Or is there now someone formerly with Roadrunner out there job hunting because he sent the song to Rolling Stone, who figured it was legit and posted it?

Not that it matters. It was quite a pleasant surprise, regardless.

The edit is for radio play.

A vast majority of radio stations will avoid a 7:20 song like the plague. It simply does not fit todays formats very well.

The clip on Rolling Stone is legit from RoadRunner.. nothing backroom about that deal. It's a simple promotion deal.

For the fans, we'll get the full 7:20 song via iTunes, Amazon or whatever service you purchase digital content from.

The RS stream was promoted via the RS website front page and rush.com/RIAB etc.

There are plenty of people out there who won't have visited any of those sites yesterday, and are waiting on the radio to play it. When they do, this will generate more interest in the song, people will visit rush.com, find the full version, and listen to that as well, especially if the DJ on the radio says about the full version being available on-line.

Basically, I'm saying that only Rush fans know about the RS stream (and people who went on the RS website just for a look around yesterday, but they probably don't know who Rush are...). Today is for the Rush fans that missed yesterday's events, and for general fans of rock music. A good plan, in my opinion.

I imagine an Eleventh Hour deal was struck, with RS pleading with Roadrunner to allow them to do it. RS knew their site would get thousands of hits... and from Rush fans, a group of people who largely "hate" them and usually avoid them like the plague. It certainly didn't hurt RS to do it, and they get the added pleasure of watching us jump through hoops to go to them.

Don't know what it does for Roadrunner or the band, really. Maybe just increased Good Will between Rush and Rolling Stone, which could pay dividends down the road.

Rush and Rolling Stone getting along? Isn't this one of the first signs of the apocalypse?

Somehow I doubt that Rush or Roadrunner pays much attention or credence to buzz "in the Rush community." This is not, and should not, be their target audience. The hardcore Rush fans will follow along for every little nugget of information and buy the new album no matter what. Who they need to be focused on is everyone else - the people who don't even know there's new Rush coming out or if they did know it don't really care. Put the song in front of those people and then the marketing will mean something.

7 minute songs work great when the DJ needs to take a dump. wink.gif
