Gompers
QUOTE (LeaveMyThingAlone @ Oct 19 2011, 09:56 AM) Dug this interview up from October 4, 1988 Rolling Stone: So tell me about that jam at the end of the Closer to the Heart.. Alex: Well, not a lot of people know this but The Knack is probably the band with a bigger influence on us than any other, so we decided to give a little ode to them with the bass line from My Sharona. Geddy said he wanted to pay tribute to the guys and I said, what the hell Rolling Stone: Why did you say what the hell? Alex: Why wouldn't I say what the hell? Rolling Stone: It just seems like an odd thing to say Alex: That's so typical of Rolling Stone. You guys thing Depeche Mode rules the music scene Rolling Stone: Whatever. You know the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? you're so not getting in. Alex: That's cool. Rolling Stone: What's that smell? Alex: It's a nasty broccoli fart. What do you think of that? Rolling Stone: It sucks like Hold Your Fire Alex: This interview's over. I have to go back to making our new album. There's gonna be bunnies and stuff. Just you wait, it will put Dark Side of the Moon to shame. Then we'll see who's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We even hired Paula Abdul's producer so you know we mean business about rocking hard this time RS: Have fun with that

GeddyRulz
QUOTE (ReRushed @ Oct 18 2011, 09:09 PM) He thinks the jam at the end of "Closer to the Heart" resembles the jam at the end of "My Sharona", specifically the bass line? I think it's reaching: Closer to My Sharona's Heart...NOT! I agree. I've never thought of it as "My Sharona." Doesn't sound at all like it, to my ears. But to answer his question: yes, they played that "jam" at the end of "Closer to the Heart" throughout the whole tour, and continued to play similar jams on future tours. "Closer to the Heart" has long been one of the few songs where they willingly open up the arrangement and allow for some spontaneous playing.
