It could be part of the light show and do all kinds of cool special effects. Imagine something like this all doing really insane lighting effects: http://www.friedpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/time-machine.jpg Maybe it could also have t-shirts inside of it and a button that Geddy pushes and it opens up and and takes the shirts out and throws them to the audience.
