Or perhaps they only meant the album 2112, and it was Tears that had the mellotron samples on it?

yes.gif

Only they weren't samples.....Hugh Syme, who now does the album artwork, played that beast.

Hugh Syme played the mellotron string parts on Tears.

Wiki lists Geddy on vocals, bass, synthesizers, Mellotron.

Various sites mention Snakes & Arrows, live, and the mellotron.

Pretty obscure topic, don't expect much replies, will have to look at album liner notes to see what songs had Mellotron.

I'm to lazy to look it up, but as far as I know Tears is the only piece on 2112 where keyboards (mellotron has keys, right? wink.gif ) are used.

I always sit there and think: "whoa, they make these sounds without any keyboards??".

As far as I know 2112 is only drums, bass, guitars... pretty "simple". But it doesn't sound simple. 1022.gif

I wish they would take that on tour so we can hear Tears live!

Well that wouldn't suck.

I'm pretty sure they used the mellotron on Faithless too

It sounds more like a synth. The mellotron has a very distinct sound.

Agreed.

Mellotron is a great addition, but too much and you'll get sick of it fast. Best to use it sparingly, having us wanting more.

Akekdoten does a fine job of being mellotron heavy. However I do agree that used occasionally, the mellotron adds a mysteriousness to the music. Tears is a perfect example of this.

Fellow Canadian musician Ian Thomas who was also signed to Anthem Records in Canada (Rush's label) thanked Geddy in the liner notes of his 1981 album "The Runner" with the following:

'Geddy Lee for the use of his mellotron'

Speaking of which there is a clip of Ian Thomas who was also the leader and singer/guitarist of his 90's band The Boomers performing at the 1995 Kumbaya Festival with Alex Lifeson here.
