Moonraker
I will give anyone a free boot of thier choice if they can tell me what this sequence of DNA codes for. Just as a bit of a hint, its a gene that appears in a non human organism that performs a special task. Moonraker
ok ok, i know im being mean. Heres how to find the answer though... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov There is a huge wealth of information that is to be found on this site and a few others I found today. It boggles the mind, I wouldnt be able to find it all in 1,000 lifetimes.

Sweet....time to school the biology teacher! lol The guest speaker that came into my class today to coinstruct gave our class personal tutorials to running this site as well as http://www.ensembl.org http://us.expasy.org http://www.sanger.ac.uk Shes been at Genentech working in the sequencing lab for 12 years, and offered a huge amount of information in that particular area of research. These websites are used by her and her department daily to verify specific genes that are sent to her to be identified, or to design primers for another research division of the company to use based on known genes of interest. I actually got to tour the lab last Tuesday, and it was just amazing to see the kinds of equipment that were automating the sequencing process. In the old days of research, plates were loaded with the various needed reagents by hand, and would take hours simply to prepare the batch. These machines were running everything, the loading, mixing, temperature changes, it was very interesting Ok I'm rambling... lol

Moonraker
QUOTE (D-13 @ Dec 9 2004, 09:33 PM) wuts a Lambda? It's a commen bacteriophage (virus) that is used in recombinant expression. You splice in your gene of interest and introduce it to a bacterial culture. The phage will then give its DNA to the bacterial cell which will begin the lysogenic cycle to allow replication of the phage DNA only, and eventually the lysis of the cell. It only infects bacterial cells by the way. It is also commonplace in electrophoresis as it provides a range of DNA fragments that when cut with a HindIII restriction enzyme, will create fragments of DNA between .5-22kb peices in length. These can be used to measure up against additional DNA you run in the gel along with it.

Probability of it being LuxR- 8127/8156 (99%) 8127 base pairs matching the known database out of 8156. I'm very impressed. You found that it has 5 subunits to it in which all put together form the LuxR protein. LuxI is an autoinducer gene that occurs between base pairs 1187-1768, which sets off the chain reaction to begin the LuxC, LuxD, LuxA, LuxB and LuxE genes. You have done some very good researching. An interesting side note, this protein occurs in aquatic bacteria and gives off a natural green light. Dead fish have been known to glow green due to the ingestion of the Vibro Fischeri that has this LuxR gene. The gene I listed above is also genetically modified with an Ampicilin resistance, also known as LuxR Plus.
