Rickenbackers

Recommended Posts

I was wondering, if I got a rickenbacker 620 guitar, would it sound good if I played "Rush in the 70's" music. I don't want to spend $1000 if it won't sound good to that type of music.

It will sound really good but won't have the same overdriven sound as a Gibson semi-hollow. It also won't have the same sustain or warmth. For referrence listen to CCR's Up And Around The Bend or Comotion. Fogerty used a Ric on those. Also most Tom Petty tunes have a Ric on them.

Rickenbackers have a very distinctive sound (that maple high-end twang!) and certain guitar players like Roger McGuinn and Tom Petty have become associated with that sound, but for guitar, Alex had more of a Gibson tone. For that money, you would probably do better with a Gibson hollow body (335, 345, 355, or Howard Roberts) or a Les Paul Standard, which would bring you closer to Alex's sound in the 70's.

For bass, however, the 4001 is the perfect choice, and nothing else sounds like it!

well then, I will probably get a Epiphone Dot. Same as the ES-335 but Epiphone style. My friend has an Epiphone Les Paul so I don't really want to get the same thing.

Get the ES-175 they just put out. Looks just like Alex's 137 from the Exit Stage Left tour.

I'm don't think Alex ever used an ES-137 live. You might be confusing with the Howard Roberts Fusion he used back then.

Excellent choice. Epiphone is great value for the money. However, I would make one recommendation - it's worth it to spend a few bucks more and upgrade the pickups to real Gibson humbuckers. The '57 re-issues are particularly nice and usually come stock with the 335.

I would definately try it out for yourself at a guitar center first before buying it. You never really know until you try it. What if you bought one, liked the sound, buy hated the way it played???

Well. There we go. It looks close enough!

Nah, look closely. The 137 has a larger lower bout and the Howard Roberts has more length from the bridge to the tailpiece to increase resonance and sustain. May not seem like much but in terms of tone it can be. Gibson is rather particular that way.

i would go with the Ibanez Artcore instead of the Epiphone, i like most epiphones but what Epiphone did to the dot, and the ES is just....urgh... and for less you get a better guitar with the ibanez, this one is around $445 and has a AWSOME TONE, i was playing Anthem at guitar center on the same amp i have (The B-52-AT100) and i got a very close tone to what alex used up till AFWTK.
