In 2112, "2112" tells a story set in the city of Megadon, "where individualism, and creativity are outlawed with the population controlled by a cabal of malevolent Priests, who reside in the Temples of Syrinx".  A galaxy-wide war resulted in the planets forcefully joining the Solar Federation symbolized by the "Red Star".  By 2112, the world is controlled by the priests, who take orders from giant banks of computers inside the temple.  Rush's commercial breakthrough song deserves to be anywhere in the top #10.

On a list of most important Rush songs it's probably number 1. 

 

 

For favorite Rush songs I have it much lower. Overture-Temples is supreme, though. 

 

I like almost every other epic more overall. But we might have every album after because of that song. So no quarrel with this pick.

"Cygnus X-1: Book Two - Hemispheres" uses mythology, and symbolism to depict a conflict between the gods "Apollo" and "Dionysus", which is resolved, when "Cygnus" intervenes, claiming a balance of heart, and mind are what is needed for humans to live well.

It's very self-aware.

A lot of their 70's songs have an overabundance of grandiloquence. A lot of "look how clever I am" moments both musically and lyrically. This is true of prog across the board. Tull has it, Yes is overrun with it. Floyd is guilty. Kansas... and on and on. Genesis? Come on. 

As these bands age most of them get better at presenting their musical talents to the songs at hand and not too much further, while tempering their prose so their points aren't dripping in adolescent pretension.

To me Hemisipheres stands up well to the best of all of these. It's what you get with young progressive music. 

It's like watching a college star athlete showing off on the field/court. They're so much better than everyone else and they're excited to prove it. 

Than they mature, the good one's anyway, into athletes that make the right plays at the right times instead of throwing insane passes that look cool but fail too often. 

Hemispheres is that awesome college star pulling off those tricks successfully in my opinion, but then we get PeW, MP, etc. 

Ready for the pros.

Very surprising choice. It's a good song, and sonically evokes the journey through the black hole wonderfully. 

 

But to me it's an incomplete song. 

 

The ship being called Rocinante is perfect, though. Best thing about the song.

The name works as a nod to Quixote, but fails in that it misses the point of the name.  "Rocinante" is a play on the Spanish word for "nag", and riding a worn out old junker ship into space to explore a black hole seems odd.  I think Neil's attempt at cleverness ultimately falls short here.

The name works as a nod to Quixote, but fails in that it misses the point of the name.  "Rocinante" is a play on the Spanish word for "nag", and riding a worn out old junker ship into space to explore a black hole seems odd.  I think Neil's attempt at cleverness ultimately falls short here.

That's true if that's where you make the connection, but naming the ship Rocinante to me is more about comparing the astronaut to Quixote, not the ship to the horse.

 

I find a lot of Neil's writing back then as clever like a well read young man.  Knows the book, understands only the surface. I think your right about what Rocinante implies, but not if all he's doing is comparing the surface delusions of the main characters.

Agreed completely. 

Rush tends to correct things live on the whole, if needed. Even amazing songs seem more amazing. 

I could say it's the energy of the show, but I do believe Rush live (musically) is one of the best bands in history.

I really like the songs "Marathon", and "Mission", and their motivational, inspirational, and sentimental messages.  From "Power Windows", and "Hold Your Fire", It's why they've been my favorites.  Any of Rush's songs they performed live in, and at their concerts sounded the same as on their studio c.ds, and albums. 

RUSH really prided themselves in reproducing their music live, which made for a great live experience but not-so-great live albums, imo.  That's why, back in the day, I loved ATWAS but had little interest in Exit Stage Left.  Same with A Show of Hands. Too clean for my live tastes.  Different Stages was great because of that third disc.

Between the wheels could be.... Should be... Would be a great song if they hadn't used that extremely irritating intro. Cut that part out and I really love this song.

 

 

I'm fine with it even being top ten, as long as I pretend that introduction is removed. 

[Nova Carmina]

"Between the Wheels" was one of the lesser songs on GUP for me -- as much as I love that album -- until they brought it out live, late career. Totally rejuvenated it for me. Top Five is a surprise, but it's a good one, intro and all!

Yet again I feel pretty much the same way.  That keyboard line really gets on my nerves.  Great chorus, though.

I was going to say that as well.  Live out of the vault BTW was great.
