Will ManRam be joining the Mets? Stay tuned...

I'm not convinced. I don't think he wants to be under the bright lights of New York. I read that part of why he wants out of Boston is the lack of privacy there. I can't imagine a New York team would help him out in that regard. Boston offered him up for nothing before, and had no takers.

In other news, the Cubs picked up lefty reliever Scott Eyre. They have been hurting in the bullpen for a long time.

The Mets are looking to add either Manny or Carlos Delgado. They've just about finalized a deal sending Mike Cameron to San Diego for Xavier Nady. They're also looking to add a closer, as they parted ways with Braden Looper. The two they're most interested in are BJ Ryan and Billy Wagner, though I don't know what their chances are with either.

Delgado ruled out the Mets last offseason because he did not like how they tried to stress his heritage during the courtship. I wonder if the Mets could come up empty handed trying for either of those two players, and be without Mike Cameron. As for the closers, that's anybody's best guess.

Scratch that last rumor. Now they're supposedly going to get dealt to Boston for top prospects at shortstop and pitcher. Florida needs a shortstop, and can't afford Lowell's contract. I'm not sure if dealing Beckett is right, though.

Another big trade: Phillies send Thome to the White Sox for Aaron Rowand. Wow. Question is how many years does Thome have left? He had an injury marred year this past season. Rowand has a lot of upside, too. Philly will assume a good chunk of Thome's contract, which runs thru 2008. Thome is well liked, and has been voted best teammate in baseball by his peers. He's also originally from Peoria, Illinois, though I think he grew up a Cub fan. A few seasons ago he was willing to give the Cubs a hometown discount when he was shopping for a new team. This signals a few things. The Sox will probably lose Konerko to free agency. It also means they have somebody they'll be comfortable with in center field, like Podsednik. Rowand is an excellent center fielder, and the Sox are definitely giving up something. The thing is, they didn't have a spot for him in the batting order, and stuffed him in the 6 slot. Iguchi is the 2 hitter, period. Thome will likely bat third or fourth. Also, will the Sox re-sign the Big Hurt? As for the Phillies, I'm assuming that Lofton is expendable. I don't follow them enough, but they seem to be a team in transition right now.

Not quite as exciting, but the Cubs signed Bobby Howry. This is another solid middle reliever for them. They're finally doing something about that bullpen. They're giving him $4 mill per year. That says something about the value of good setup men.

Are the Yankees finally learning? They've been very quiet so far this offseason, haven't they?

I could see them dealing Sheffield, or even Jorge Posada, for the right package, but otherwise this is the quietest I've ever seen them. Lots of new coaches, but that's about it. They're not going after free agents very hard, but there aren't that many out there as it stands now.

It's official now. Given that it's the Mets doing all this activity, one can only expect Wagner to have more trips to the DL and for Delgado's knee to flare up again. wink.gif

Jeter or A-Rod as the new Yankee center fielder? The Yanks are without a regular centerfielder, as it appears to be the end of the line for Bernie Williams. Damon is out of the question, and the Yanks have depleted their farm system so badly that they cannot put together a package for Juan Pierre. So if one of them goes to center, who plays third base? Bill Mueller?

Rumor is that the Yanks are looking to sign Kyle Farnsworth, and they want to pay him big bucks, like $5 mill per season for 3 years. Farnsie throws serious heat, but I gotta say that he had quite a reputation with the Cubs for partying harder than anybody ever has before. He was frequently spotted in bars around the North Side. Getting out of Chicago was probably the best career move he made. If he didn't throw as hard as he does, baseball would have given up on him long ago. Rumor is that Tom Gordon, their best setup guy last season, is going to Philly.

Konerko has re-signed with the White Sox for 5 years.

I think it's now safe to say that Frank Thomas will not be with the team next year, with Thome and Konerko both on board now.

Looks that way.....wonder who would be interested in Frank?
