They can be very nasty Pickerel are the same....We used to use steel leaders but now we switched to braided. I use the Stren Braided 30 lb test. It helps in a lot less lost lures Yes, I have heard of the Braided leaders. I don't fish for pike much, only when the trout fishing is slow. I had the bass with my left hand but I'm not good at taking the bait out of the mouth that way especially with the Skitterwalks (walk the dog style baits). They usually strike the bait sideways leaving a very delicate situation to pull it out. Anyway, I tried to make an easy switch to the left hand so that I can pull the bait out with my right hand. Just as I did that, the bass did the fish wiggle & the treble hook hit me hard. It's fair, I stuck him, turnabout is fair play. So the hook went to bone (I think because it still hurts a little-like a bruise)..... If you look behind me, you'll see the water. That's the pond that they stock with trout. It was difficult pulling that sucker out of knee deep water and mud .As I was pulling it out of the mud, I yelled "By the power of Grey Skull!" It became a chowder clam. The end. Give it a shot What's the worst that can happen? you lose a fish or maybe a lure. I fish only single barbless hooks all the time. We lost too many in the last two seasons. Losing lures is not fun for us especially at $7 a pop. Yeah, but with one less treble hook and one clipped your chances are allot greater of not losing it. BTW... that's what is great about fly fishing, you can learn to tie your own flies and save money big time! Fly tying is an art form. I agree....We have a pond that is stocked with trout. LSM & I want to fly fish there....Can't do it without a boat, though rent a float tube!! LSM doe NOT want to be in anything plastic! It has to be metal! It stays fairly deep upstream from the bridge as well. I'm not sure if the water color is stained from the massive rain (and tornado) that moved through the state last week or if that's the natural color.I'm betting the rain's muddied the water up.
