Telephone Scams

You are not supposed to answer your phone if someone asks "Can you hear me?" They're actually recording your response (Yes) to use for voice recognition software to steal your account information.

Do u have an answering machine you'll never have to answer the phone again. Screen away...

No, I don't have one. I just hang up.

My favorite one is Elizabeth. She's good at what she does:

"Hello. It's Elizabeth. I've been trying to reach you for so long..."

Before that, her opening line was:

"Oops! I really do need a new headset..."

About 2 months ago a scammer called me and really rattled me. I was left very angry after the call.

The called knew my daughters name and said she applied to receive a free summer work packet for school complete with CD's and DVD's. I was told they need permission from a parent to send it all.

I paused and said, yeah sure I guess.

Then the scam portion when I'm told, "you just need to cover the shipping which is $2.87. How would you like to pay for that?"

At that moment I said, you know what I don't know anything about this. I'll talk to my daughter when she gets home about this. Is this a good number to call you back on?

She says "yes it is"

I said, and your name is?

Click...end of phone call. I was ripping pissed off!

There's no point in registering on a Do Not Call Registry it seems.

The laws have changed. Those do not calls lists are a thing of the past

Then why do they still have it if it's useless?

Makes as much sense as advertising "This Is A Weapons Free Facility." ;)

The only phones that will work in an extended power outage are the corded ones.

Cell phones would still work until their batteries died I would think.

Need cell towers to transfer the signals. If they have no power good luck with your cell phone.

Or the circuits get overloaded. During the Canberra fires I lost my land line, my power and then cellular network got hammered. You also need to charge cell phones at some point.
