QUOTE (danielmclark @ May 30 2012, 03:26 PM) QUOTE (presto123 @ May 30 2012, 12:39 PM) QUOTE (trenken @ May 30 2012, 12:12 PM) QUOTE (Mr. Henry Gale @ May 29 2012, 03:42 PM) QUOTE (trenken @ May 29 2012, 11:36 AM) Leaks do effect sales, but with itunes being so popular now, CD sales in the toilet, and many people not knowing how to use torrent, they arent as big of a deal as people think, especially for a band like Rush with an older, less computer-saavy fan base. Rush barely sells 500k copies these days, so a leak really is not going to have much of an impact on them. Adele who is one of the big new artists in music, her recent debut album sold something like 15 million copies, even though it leaked pretty early, and she has a much younger fan base, one much larger than Rush's at this point, so naturally she has a lot more fans who knows how to download leaks, and she still sold a stupid amount of albums. Leaks really dont effect the industry very much. People make a bigger deal out of it than it really is. Here's the thing though (and I agree with you, I'm just going to elaborate a bit more on this. And it's not directed at you). Can anyone honestly say that if something didn't leak, people would go out and buy it? I just can't disagree with this notion enough. The way I see it, people download because they no longer value music at their current asking price. The point I'm trying to arrive at is, some people no longer value music - period. They will NEVER again pay for music. That's just the reality of the situation. An album not leaking won't make them change their mind, and make them suddenly go buy it on release date. No, they will wait for the release date, then download it as soon as someone uploads it. The issue isn't the early release of the material, it's the mentality of people that no longer value music from product/monetary sense. Again, keep in mind i'm not talking about morally speaking. I'm talking about separating emotion from this issue, and just looking at it from a business point of view. The only time I agree that leaks HEAVILY effect sales, is if the album leaks a month + out from the release, and people lose interest in it. But it is my belief that generally speaking, there are people that will buy music, people that won't. That doesn't change whether something leaks or doesn't (unless it's a rare case of a super early leak, and like I said - i admit in that instance people will lose interest, as they have already heard the product). The other example I guess would be, if a product leaks and it's awful. And word gets out that the product is awful, so people stay away from it. Basically, I do agree with you. But I also think it goes beyond that, and I think the industry is also to blame for not changing the prices of music, as it's no longer valued anymore at their asking price. And also their refusal to adopt the digital format when it first came out. I for one, would be more willing to buy digital albums at $5 a pop. I'm not paying $10-12 for a digital copy. Things like Spotify also seem to satisfy somes needs. Thankfully, I get most my music for free through the labels (promos etc.). So I don't usually have to worry about paying, or feeling bad for illegally downloading. Well it's hard for me to look at it like people don't value music when Adele's debut album sells 15 million copies. She just sold half of what Rush has TOTAL in 4 decades, with just 1 album compared to how many Rush has. There are many artists out there selling stupid amounts of legit copies. Justin Bieber just barely hitting puberty has made about $100mil off of album sales already. Lady Gaga obviously is having insane sales. Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, all selling way more albums than Rush ever did before the internet was even around! Now people can get all these albums for free if they wanted, yet legit sales are still amazingly high for these artists. Leaks and illegal downloads obviously aren't effecting them very much. There is a huge amount of people willing to buy these albums through iTunes. You are comparing a prog rock band to the most popular pop artists in the world. You can't do that. Pop will win every time. Pop sales are still waaaayyy down overall compared to what it used to be. I would like to see some numbers supporting that claim. Fans of Gaga and Rihanna are too dumb to know how to get it without paying.

QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ May 29 2012, 07:03 PM) QUOTE (Gilbertk @ May 29 2012, 06:05 PM) I asked at a Barnes and Noble today how early they get in new album releases, and the woman got extremely pissed and told me they get them the day before and she will NOT sell me a copy early. I didn't even ask that, I just asked if they got it early. Geez.. Off topic, but they still sell music? I went to the Barnes and Noble near me recently and they replaced the music/movie section with toys. Mine has a huge (overpriced) media section. I'd never buy CA there, but I just wanted to know when they get it. I know a guy at the local Walmart who works in the entertainment section. I asked when he thinks they'll get it in and if it'd be possible to get it early. Waiting patiently for his response..
  15. QUOTE (metaldad @ May 29 2012, 06:36 PM) QUOTE (Powderfinger @ May 29 2012, 05:14 PM) I don't know how I messed this up. Can someone explain it real slow for people like me who are only paying half attention? I went to my local bookstore thinking I would find Rush coverage in the new issues of Mojo, Prog Rock, and Classic Rock. I found nothing. I think the Prog Rock magazine I found had a dude from Porcupine Tree on it. The Classic Rock I found has AC/DC on the cover. And Mojo has the Small Faces. Did I miss the Rush issues? I hope not. I've avoided reading the transcripts posted here because I wanted to enjoy the real thing. Edit update: I just tried a second store and again had no luck. But in the process I realized that I've been seeing Classic Rock with Slash on the cover, as opposed to AC/DC. You did not miss anything, they are Not out in the u.s. yet . I saw the Mojo with then Rush interview here in Georgia.

  19. QUOTE (The Mighty Dudad @ May 29 2012, 11:22 AM) QUOTE (Rush-O-Matic @ May 29 2012, 10:35 AM) ?!?! Geddy, re: Vapor Trails "Our plan is to remix it. We've always planned to remix it, for years; our sound engineer, Rich Chycki, is working on that right now. It's our intention to have it as a bonus on the release of this album." No way that's going to happen. Is that why the CA album price is more than $9.99? Can't be. I think this bit was from Alex, not Geddy...and pretty much contradicts what Geddy has said in a recent interview... Would be cool, but is highly unlikely. That Alex sure does like to say stuff in interviews that never seems to come true. Yeah. Can you believe he actually thinks the album cover is 2112!! HA! We all KNOW it's 9/11! Disclaimer: This was just a joke and is pure sarcasm. I hope that this reply will not lead to a repeat of the War of 2112 or any new threads, posts, and/or polls related to this topic.

Guess how many times you will blink during your first spin of Clockwork Angels. I will blink 146 times while wearing Converse shoes and munching on pizza. That's once every 27.36986301369863 seconds! Wow man.. I think my blink count will be way higher... I'll let you know on the 12!
