A Couple of more Pathetic Re-makes In Store
anagramking replied to Test4VitalSigns's topic in Video Vertigo
QUOTE (Merely Space @ Aug 14 2008, 08:30 AM) QUOTE (MULTIPLIED REACTION @ Aug 13 2008, 11:18 PM) I'm waiting for the remake of Ishtar. Funny. I'm waiting for the remake of Heaven's Gate. IMO, one of the reasons for remakes is the ugly intersection of art and business. Investing in art is difficult, because it can be so unpredictable. That's terrifying for an investor. But remakes give the business people an illusion of predictability. They can a) grasp what the film is going to be like, because they've seen it before, and say to themselves "hey, this concept made money the first time around, so it's safe to bet it will make money this time around." Exactly right. Remakes and sequels are low risk money makers. New and original means a lot more risk. Until this changes, we will be seeing more and more remakes and sequels, along with sequels of remakes, even. -
I'm surprised Eyes Wide Shut got a vote. I thought that was the worst one I saw of his, not that I've seen all of them.

Big win for the Patriots tonight over the Cowboys.

QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Aug 11 2008, 09:06 PM) QUOTE (tick @ Aug 11 2008, 08:16 PM) QUOTE (timintey @ Aug 11 2008, 09:06 PM) If I'm Pedro or Santana I'm saying FU to Manuel when he comes to take me out. This is truly ridiculous. Damn, if only they wanted to stay in bad enough to feel that way. I honestly don't think Pedro or Santana give a shit enough to want to pitch more then there typical 6 or 7 innings. BIG MONEY PUSSYS, THAT WHAT THEY ARE ! Am I wrong ? They should do what the A's did with Eckersley. Turn Martinez into a reliever. Trade Heilman and Beltran for a good starting pitcher. Only thing is, I don't think Heilman has much trade value anymore. Why not trade Beltran now before his contract is up? Once his contract is up he can't wait to get out of NY. They're debating on tv right now, are the Mets a playoff team? I think you have a good point about Pedro becoming a closer. He cannot pitch much more than 6 innings anymore, anyway.

I can feel the pain you guys are going through. I saw so many shitty bullpens from the Dodger teams I followed in the 80s that broke my heart the same way.

Another new red we tried last night - barbera (d'Alba). It went great with my veal parm.

Expounding further on the idea of trying a new wine and getting out of the comfort zone, we went to Mario Batali's Enoteca San Marco at the Venetian last night. The easy thing to do is find a chianti or a pinot grigio. We found this Slovenian wine made from a grape called ribolla gialla. The waiter told us about the process this wine underwent. Basically, it's made by the same process that the ancient Romans and Greeks used. So it had to be tried. It's actually not a red, and was found in the white wine category. However, the wine would be better described as orange, and it is served chilled. It's hard to describe what I tasted, but we both really liked it a lot. I'm not sure if I will ever see it on a menu again. Anyone ever run across this before?

QUOTE (liquidcrystalcompass @ Aug 7 2008, 06:36 PM) QUOTE (anagramking @ Aug 7 2008, 04:47 PM) I just tried a new one last night. The grape is called mencia and the wine was from the Bierzo region (no idea of the significance of the region as it pertains to wine) of Spain. It has a pretty spicy taste to it. Very interesting, anyway. It's always nice to discover something new. I find that the key is to keep trying new varieties instead of getting in a rut and drinking the same old stuff. It's amazing how much stuff is out there, and it's amazing how cheap a lot of it is. I'm a bit rusty but I worked in fine dining for quite a stretch and have a high level of wine knowledge. Think about it This is a high level wine that is considered "generic" by the wine snobs, and it is called "Opus One". It goes for $120-$165 a bottle in a restaurant. You could grab it for $55 bucks at the local liquor store. I would recommend this one for a special occasion. Up front, it's like a very well aged Cabernet Sauvingon, the blend of grapes in the wine (can't remember off the top of my head any longer) are a combination of five. Again, Opus One starts off bold and woody, then goes almost a Merlot feel (after a second or two) and you get the Merlot metallic taste. After that is softens farily quickly with a slight and fruity after taste. Don't let "fruity" throw you off. This wine is robust. I found this short wiki on Opus One: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opus_One_Winery Do they use the mencia grape at all, or are you mentioning a wine completely apart from what I mentioned? The wine we drank was $11 a glass, which was low end at this establishment (Olives, at the Bellagio; we're on vacation in Vegas). I imagine at a wineshop it would go for $15 a bottle or so.

QUOTE (lerxt1990 @ Aug 1 2008, 08:58 PM) http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM...scl=1&encType=1 There it is folks. Angelinos... what is that thing behind the house, some sort of aquaduct? That's the Los Angeles River. It runs through the Valley, alongside the Ventura Freeway, then near downtown, then onward to Long Beach where it ends. Some movies and videos have scenes by the LA River near downtown. http://www.urbanedpartnership.org/target/u...tour/index.html

QUOTE (Tortoise and Hare @ Aug 1 2008, 08:50 AM) It took me a YEAR to get over losing Hawk (Kenny Harrelson) in 1969! He calls White Sox games on TV here now. I would say that he is the worst major league announcer I have ever heard, bar none, for whatever that's worth. Anytime he wants to go back there is fine by me.

QUOTE (Test4VitalSigns @ Jul 30 2008, 11:32 PM) QUOTE (moltenlava @ Jul 31 2008, 12:22 AM) Howie Hamburger Dude, huh? Thanks. That would have eventually weighed on my mind and I would have been forced to IMDb it....Which one was the film when they were all under the table doing blow? Had to be Nice Dreams then, right? Yep. Now I remember. Cheech bumps into his old girlfriend at the Diner, and she's with the Humburger Dude. Then they jet off to hotel to service her and they meet up with her big, burly, biker boyfriend who hates Mexicans. lol. You remember that cat's name? Yup that was Nice Dreams. As for the dude's name I think it was Animal. Been a very long time since I've watched Nice Dreams. I'll have to buy it to add to the collection Found the scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VooULmgxhZ4

QUOTE (metaldad @ Jul 31 2008, 12:33 PM) the trade deadline is over and the met's do shit agian. no pitching help? no outfield help? a few teams made trades and they are not one of them. thank's omar What did you have in mind for them? I don't see how Griffey is a fit there, and I wondered if Adam Dunn would be their kind of player. Did they have anything they could offer for Manny? Not a lot of pitching out there to be had, either. A few middle relievers available, but that's about it.

This makes as much sense as a third Wayne's World.

Just got back from out of town today. It had been a good week so I decided last night that I was going to have a really good glass of port. I decided on the 1985 Dow's. I asked them if they had decanted it, and they said they had. They had only one pour left in the bottle. Sure enough, all the sediment came out with the port. Moral of the story is to not order a glass of vintage ruby port at a bar unless you're really sure that they know what they're doing with port. As a vintage bottle lasts only a few days after it's been opened, that's another reason to not get a vintage ruby at the bar. So they poured it out I got a glass of Taylor Fladgate 30 Year Tawny instead. I know I have said on here that I don't like tawny port quite as much, but I really did like that one. Tawny does not require decanting, so they can't screw that one up at the bar.

QUOTE (Jack Aubrey @ Jul 20 2008, 02:17 PM) OK, I remember reading this story when I was in Junior High. The gist of it is that a man is challenged to a duel and when he gets ready to fight, his mouth has gone so dry from fear that his lips stick to his teeth. His opponent sees this and erroneously believes that the man is smiling so he backs out of the duel because he's terrified to fight a man who would smile so in the face of danger. That's pretty much all I remember and I'd really like to read this story again. Do any of you fine folks know what it's called and/or who wrote it? Thanks. You're not thinking of The Most Dangerous Game, written by Richard Connell, are you? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Most_Dangerous_Game

I had a glass of gamay (a French red) tonight with dinner. It tasted great on its own, but I did a bad job with the food pairing.

If they keep this up Jerry Manuel keeps his job.

You obviously have never tried Dos Equis! nope, i'll look out for it, it has to better than the others ive tried. It is. I believe the brewery was started by a German brew master. I used to know a guy who called it "Dos Equus" because he said "it tasted like two horses pissed in it"! Never had it, myself. That dude probably liked Corona. But it's so good with the lime wedge. Come on! The only reason that any honorable man would put a citrus fruit in there beer is if they are suffering from scurvy. I confess that I have the lemon slice on the rare occasion that I drink a hefeweizen.
