  1. QUOTE (tommyali @ Aug 23 2012, 08:00 AM) Am I the only one on the planet? Too me, Snakes and Arrows is just a better album from start to finish. A beautiful album. I would put it in my top three all time Rush albums. Don't get me wrong, Clockwork rocks. And at times rocks even harder than S&A. I mean, there's some pretty intense playing on it. But sometimes it seems to go a little too long. It drags. And some songs I'm just not crazy about. And I am a huge Rush fan, I've never disliked anything. But this one seems to have a little more bark than bite. I dont like the 60s vibe on S&A at all. I wasnt born until the late 70s and really just never got into the sound going on in the 60s too much, and they really fed off of Feedback when writing S&A. Too much of a folk vibe to it, and overall just more of the safe standard issue rock song writing theyve been trapped in for years. I LOVE the sound quality of it though. Huge step up from VT. It's very crisp, good dynamics. I think sonically its sooo much better sounding than CA, dont know why since they had the same producer and engineer. Just listen to the drums on both albums, the drums on S&A sound so much better and were killed on CA. Plus CA just sounds very muddy, especially the guitars. Sometimes Ill crank stuff like TMMB or Spindrift (love both songs), and they really sound great, but crank up CA and its just a total turd and falls apart. But although I find CA to be pretty dull, I do think it sounds more modern than S&A, so I still like CA more although I dont even listen to CA anymore. Ill come back to it at some point like I do all Rush albums eventually.

    The Wreckers

This song definitely strikes me as something they would play live. It has those friendly melodies that Geddy REALLY likes. The songs they usually seem to avoid live are stuff like Garden (too slow for a live setting, major bathroom break song), Wish Them Well has filler song written all over it so I cant see them playing that, Halo Effect could be skipped, but Wreckers (especially since they have a video for it) is just almost a certainty at this point I think. The only point I had is we all have the lyrics so the video is useless. They could have just saved that boat animation for the show. I guess they want to get some youtube exposure, but really, Rush isnt winning over too many new fans with that video so I just dont get it. And theres only 1 animation in it basically, the whole thing is just that one scene.

    The Wreckers

QUOTE (Bangster of Goats @ Sep 1 2012, 09:15 AM) Plenty of bands and artists still make videos. Youtube's where it's at. Yeah tons of them still make real music videos, Rush doesnt bother with it though most likely just because they dont really sell a lot of albums and havent in a long time, so spending a million to make a video doesnt make sense for them. It does make sense for extremely popular modern rock bands though. The fact that MTV doesnt play them doesnt matter, far more people are on youtube than there was people watching MTV. So when you go search for a new song you like, often youll find the real video on the bands official YT page, so there's still a huge use for videos. Its actually bigger now than it ever was. I think one of Rihanna's videos has like 200 million hits, same with Lady Gaga, so they are getting a huge amount of exposure through youtube, which really is the new, and MUCH better, MTV since you can just go right to what you're looking for. With MTV you just had to wait around for videos you cared about.

    The Wreckers

I cant think of why they are even bothering creating these lyric videos. They really dont serve any purpose, and it seems like this is an animation they culd have just saved for the show, if the play this song, which I have a feeling they will. It's not exactly hard to find the lyrics and there's really nothing in this video. The band isnt in it and its really not a regular music video.
  5. QUOTE (Babycat @ Aug 19 2012, 03:54 PM) It's not lacking anything. Creativity and originality would like a serious work with you.
  6. I dont really hear much PT in there. Ive heard most of their stuff but never spent much time on them. I dont like them at all so maybe I just havent listened to them enough to hear the connection so maybe its there, but I dont really hear it.

    is it just me ?

QUOTE (Nate2112 @ Aug 12 2012, 09:33 AM) The lyrics on CA are supposed to tell a story...they do a great job doing that but they're too literal to be put into a song...People tend to say how great the lyrics are when in fact I prefer Power Windows' lyrics by far. Do you mean too straight to the point, not enough disguising what he's really trying to say? If thats what you meant I would agree so not its not just you. Ive seen plenty of people mention this and I have as well. Something I always admired about Neil's style, from about PeW-I guess Presto or RTB was what he personally describes as a mildly cryptic approach. Lots of great lyricists write in a way without saying exactly what they mean which leaves them open to interpretation, which is why some Rush songs can mean different things to different people. But it really takes effort to write that stuff well. He's much older now and for the past 3 or 4 albums he's written in a much more direct manner which is a lot easier. I do wish the lyrics on this album were a lot more abstract than they are. This was the same problem I had with S&A. It wasnt so much the religion bashing on that album, but the fact that he didnt try to mask it at all. "I dont have faith in faith...". Come on Neil. Spend a few more minutes and come up with a metaphor there than those cringe worthy lyrics.
  8. No way. Far more into Nocturniquet from TMV. It sounds much more modern and doesnt have the dated 70s hard rock vibe CA has. Im sure canadian ice and his old ass will be around shortly crying like the baby he always is. "WAAAA im old and I like old dated sounding music!!!". Good for you, FYI not everyone here is 60 dude and not everyone has to like the same shit as you. Go change your diapers.
  9. QUOTE (eshine @ Aug 2 2012, 02:50 AM) It is succinct. The guy sounds like a Rush fan but not a fanboy. His comments are right on the mark. QUOTE Geddy Lee's bass is mixed further up-front than it has been in some time -- which makes his mind-blowing chops resound: there are amazing pizzicatos interspersed in driving hard rock fills and edgy, off-kilter funk riffs. His voice is more nuanced and more emotionally expressive. QUOTE Alex Lifeson's acoustic guitars have an established place here, but his electric axes roar over them throughout. QUOTE Peart's drumming is the catalyst: his technical mastery makes his playing sound purely instinctive. CA is full of dynamic surprises I've read all the reviews of this album, but this one seemed so immediate to me - and unbiased. It hit all the right buttons for me. Yeah you're very wrong. Mind blowing chops? Come on now. Any very skilled bassist will tell you right now that he's doing ANYTHING difficult on this album. He just does some scale runs here and there. He's not doing the kinds of complex runs he used to do. John Myung has MIND BLOWING chops. Geddy has never even been remotely close to that complex of a bassist. So yeah, this reviewer IS a fanboy, like you.

    BU2B2

It's very short so who cares if it's bad? It sounds like some filler thing they slapped together in the studio, like MalNar. Just skip it. How many Rush albums are there where every song is completely awesome? IMO none after Power Windows once they were forced to start writing more than 8 songs after CDs came around.
  11. Ive never heard of that band before but yeah it's kind of similar. Definitely not exact but they're related.
  12. QUOTE (GernTheFish @ Jul 27 2012, 12:42 PM) Just wondering how folks think CA will translate to the live stage. Which ones will rock, which will not sound as good live, what songs are you wanting to hear the most on tour? I need to give it more thought, but right now I'm thinking about 7cog. It's not my favorite on CA, but I have a feeling it will melt my face off when they play it live. Any others? Well obviously all the harder ones will rock, slower ones like Halo Effect, Garden or something too 'poppy' like Wish Them Well will signal major restroom traffic jams. Basically do not even try to go to restrooms during any of those songs if they play them, which I have a serious doubt about them playing any of those 3 because of it killing the energy in the crowd and Rush seems to really try to avoid those songs.

  14. QUOTE (HigherWater @ Jul 24 2012, 08:58 PM) Good God! I've been away from the forum for about a week and it seems like in that time the haters have completely taken over! Why is Rush not aloud to write a song with a verse/chorus/bridge alignment (The Wreckers) or a song with a nice bouncy melody (Wish Them Well)? CA is a good if not great balanced record that the guys can be very proud of. I cannot believe that a Forum member would say, "I'd be embarrassed for Rush if they played that song on the radio." What a worthless, obnoxious thing to say. I'm sorry but seriously, as much as I hate Superconductor I would never say I was embarrassed for Rush. What embarrasses me are Rush fans that act like turds every time the guys try to give us something new. Like the new album, hate the new album-- Whatever. But don't for a second feel embarrassed for Rush-- They are a lot better than you! They're allowed to do whatever they want. They can put a country album out if they want, but people are allowed to have criticisms. That's part of what message boards are for, for people to express opinions, positive and negative. It's not a dictatorship where you can only share positive opinions. I like the Wreckers because I listen to all kinds of music, and it reminds me a LOT of Coldplay, who I like. Wish Them Well is just total crap to me. Bottom line is the band has drifted very far away from what many of their old fans loved about them, so you're going to get people that arent happy, especially considering how old the band is and the possibility that this is their last album. Overall I dont think this album is that good, but its just my opinion. I dont need anyone to agree with it, Im just sharing my opinions on it since I dont have anywhere else to vent about it. Its the only Rush board I visit.

    Chill

QUOTE (glover @ Jul 25 2012, 11:22 PM) So I get on to catch up and see a bunch of Rush fans being jerks...chill out... Last time I checked, we were here to simply keep up on our favorite band...not compete, criticize, and crap like that. Big f-ing deal if you post something in the wrong spot... move on... It's a message board. What do you think goes on in these placed? Everyone agrees on everything and nothing ever sinks down into an argument? Come on. Every message board Ive ever visited is exactly like this one, and some are FAR worse.
  16. QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Jul 22 2012, 09:24 PM) QUOTE (trenken @ Jul 22 2012, 09:16 PM) After about 50 listens, I feel the same way about it as I did when I first heard it. Pretty bleh overall. The band is old and there is no way this is even remotely close to stuff like Hemispheres, PeW, MP, stuff like that. It's down in the bottom 5 for me. Somewhere hovering around there. The song writing and melodies are just so typical and not nearly as adventurous as they once were, and of course the vocals are just extremely painful to listen to at times. It's better than nothing and the fact that they're old men still putting out DECENT albums is really a credit to them, but I cant possibly convince myself this is really the Rush that I love. It's the same guys, but not the same band. Ill take whatever I can get from them as long as they want to keep putting this stuff out and Ill still hand my money over to see them live knowing each time it could be the last, but this album is just not really that good. My opinion. Dont care who doesnt agree. Noone can convince me this album is amazing. If someone else thinks it is, thats fine, I would never argue that with them. listen to it again. i guarantee you'll like wish them well on the 51st listen. Lol. Trust me I dont HATE the album. Im talking relative to the Rush that I loved. Their best albums. For me it's not close to that stuff. Believe me Id rather listen to this than some Nickelback album. I may never grow to like the album as much as some others but I dont care about that. I thought they were finished after what happened to Neil. These last 3 albums are just a bonus and an excuse for them to keep touring and me keep seeing them before they pack it in so it doesnt bother me at all that I dont love this album.

  18. QUOTE (Presto-digitation @ Jul 21 2012, 07:08 AM) CA by a mile. I can actually discern instruments on that album. It's not a bottom end BLUR. I can't hear one DISTINCTIVE, separated bass line on VT. Not one. It's muddy and buried. Hell, that difference alone is makes it appreciably better. Then again there are probably folks who think CA sounds worse than an album like St. Anger, sonically, too. I say put down the crack pipe. St. Anger is horrific, but it was actually done on purpose. VT ended up that way because the band tried to produce it by themselves, and the role of a producer is quality control. Without another set of ears there to say, "No more vocal layering Geddy", then he'll just do what he wants. I really try to avoid trashing St. Anger too much because they really WANTED that album to sound that way.
  19. QUOTE (Tombstone Mountain @ Jul 20 2012, 06:29 PM) QUOTE (trenken @ Jul 20 2012, 06:21 PM) CA by a fair amount. Obviously VT is just a disaster. CA has problems but not on that scale, but it's not up there with the quality of albums like Power Windows. Not even close to that. So to me it's maybe halfway between PoW and VT as far as sound quality goes. Dude...we missed you!!!! Place your right hand on your left shoulder. Now, Place your left hand on your right shoulder. Squeeze tightly!!!! that's from all of us here at the forum!!! Lol. I havent been listening to the album so I didnt exactly have a lot to talk about on this CA dedicated board.
  20. QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Jul 20 2012, 08:08 PM) how is it that rush themselves don't get to give the approval after this thing is engineered and before they release the damn thing? To be honest I think they just got tunnel vision. You spend a long time working on something and you just convince yourself it sounds good. If they had fresh ears come in and tell them about what they heard, maybe they would start hearing it as well. Either that or Nick is at fault and the band put too much trust in him and took a backseat as far as the quality goes thinking he would just nail it for them.

  22. Well thats just opinions. I think BU2B has less of that "we just jammed these songs out in a studio" sound to it, so I like it more than the rest. It just sounds like it got more love and attention. What has changed is the mix quality. Listen to the drums in the original singles, then listen to them on the album, they're not as powerful or dynamic, and that stretches through the rest of the album. I have no idea why but when I crank BU2B on the album in the car its just not as powerful as it was, so in itunes I replaced the album versions of caravan and bu2b with the singles versions and I feel at least a little better about it now, just wish the rest of the songs had the same recording quality.
  23. QUOTE (pedro2112 @ Jul 17 2012, 02:21 AM) QUOTE (trenken @ Jul 16 2012, 08:00 PM) Maybe better than RTB I don't put it in my top ten either, but for the love of everything holy, not better than RTB??? Quit trolling! Dreamline alone takes a dump all over everything on CA. That alone makes me wonder if CA means more to me than that album, plus RTB has a few other strong songs, so for me it's very debatable considering I think most of CA is very boring.
