  2. QUOTE (An Enemy Without @ May 12 2012, 09:08 PM) A new Rush album is coming.....excitement and hype abound. I can perfectly understand fans not wanting to be cautious about expectations and wanting to hype lest they have too low and realistic hopes only to be satisfied. However, some of you go beyond this....expressing pervasive happiness and positivity about the album, which hasn't even been heard in full. Yes, I know that some of you like the three songs heard so far and you have every right to express your satisfaction, but the attitude I also sense is of almost complete enamoration...not able to salvage anything negative out of the new stuff. I see this on other forums too, usually much worse there than on here. Beyond expressing particular points of satisfaction, what gives about the love? Why the fanboyism? Are you indirectly expressing some sort of thanks towards the band about past expectations being exceeded or utter satisfaction? Is this positivity some sort of defense mechanism against disappointment, or you just like to express agreeable opinions out of fear of dissent, or vent your satisfaction about other things in your lives that have nothing to do with Rush? Do you feel envious towards those Rush fans who are hating the new material, but you cant join the party? Are you happy that every Rush album might as well be MP 2 or your own personal fantasy album? Im not trying to sound like a jerk, but just curious to know the reasons behind all this positive spew I see and hear so often when it comes to new Rush. The positivity is old and tiresome. It contributes nothing interesting or exciting to discussions. Heard it all. Again, to be clear, Im no troll and dont appreciate blind hatred for anything Rush puts out either. There are many Rush songs I do appreciate, but I try to keep an open mind too. Im also not talking about critical reviews or healthy analyses and debates with balanced perspectives. Expressing general liking for a song or album is not what I have an issue with. You know what Im talking about....we've seen it here, elsewhere and will see it again.........unfortunately. What is the point of this post? Zzzzzz.....

They are ending their career with an album in the same league as MP, Signals & 2112. But that's just MY opinion, my taste, my deal... Coolio? Ah, Tony R , the basement dwelling, "Prog Archivist" returns with his acerbic wit for yet another round... Go on mate, bore me some more... All aboard the fail train. Choo-choo. "Fail Train"? Cliche train perhaps? yawn...

    911?

I must admit that on first inspection I perceived it as 9:11/eleven minutes past 9 or 911. However, I was thinking in terms of the year 2111, a year before 2112 and perhaps a kind of "prequel" to 2112, given the "seeing the future from the past" rhetoric and the Time Machine Tour... Then I realized that I was looking too deeply.
  6. "Clockwork Angels will suck ass". Much like Snakes & Arrows sucked same. Why get yourselves all excited about the new release? You're all gonna slag it off after a few months anyway, buy tickets for the tour and then slag that off as well... "Virtuality" Predictable yet sadly true... Yours, Net Boy...
  7. QUOTE (Presto-a RUSH fan! @ Mar 5 2012, 11:46 PM) QUOTE (Terrapin @ Mar 5 2012, 07:39 PM) QUOTE (Presto-a RUSH fan! @ Mar 5 2012, 11:29 PM) QUOTE (Tony R @ Mar 5 2012, 07:03 PM) Always amazes me how relatively newbies to the band claim to know so much about the motivation and creative impetus of a band that was already past their sell by date before they became fans. Lee and Lifeson wrote all the music, they were the creative spark. Neil just provided the clothes pegs for Lee and Lifeson to hang their coats on. So what is the definition of a "newbie". I guess since I became a HUGE fan in 1990 on Presto, I am a "newbie". I've only been a fan for 22 of their 38 years. Just because you happen to find a band after they start, doesn't mean you don't love them or know the history as well as someone who has been there from day one. Sure I don't have stories about getting the albums or going to concerts before Presto, but I still have the ability to read the RUSH books, learn the history, watch the DVDs of early performances and I am still aloud to listen to pre-1990 music and enjoy it. In fact, my favorite RUSH albums are mostly pre-Presto. I love when people get this idea that because they have been around from the beginning, their opinion is so much more valid than others. I get it if the fan just found RUSH on Snakes & Arrows but to say something like what you just said, just shows an elitist snobbery. IMO, of course. Tony R and those of his ilk are what are known as "Prog Snobs". For them, it's not about the music. It's about trying to USE said music in a contrived and manufactured way in which to further their own little agendas. Sad but true... Wow...I'd like to take you opinion seriously, but seeing that you are a "newbie" to TRF, you obviously don't know what you are talking about! JUST KIDDING! I could NOT agree more! Ha ha! Well, I'm a 45 year old pro musician. I've been out in the field for about 25 years working my fingers off as a real muso. Discovered Rush at about 15, bought every album after. Still, I must be a "newbie" according to those that have the time to post 24/7 Cheers!

Hanging around with the band back in 1974 - present with your little prog archive note pad were you? I think not.
  10. QUOTE (metaldad @ Mar 5 2012, 07:24 PM)QUOTE (Lerxster @ Mar 5 2012, 01:35 PM) And lastly, why dont people talk about Alex or Geddy more? I wish they would, they Write the music . Everyone seems to think that if Neil never joined , it would have been the end of the band . Plenty of Great drummers in the world. Al and Ged would have found someone Kinda somes up your knowledge of band ethos and the subsequent dynamic
  11. QUOTE (treeduck @ Feb 14 2012, 07:56 PM) That there are millions of better books out there... Like...?
  12. QUOTE (PumpkinHead @ Feb 13 2012, 12:40 AM) How about kissing some REAL ass? http://onemansblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Kiss-My-Butt.jpg Very intelligent... I'm sure Peart would concur. LMAO
  13. How about growing up and getting a life?
  14. Personally, I find this concept very intriguing and richly entertaining indeed. If Peart chooses to use this medium as a vehicle to voice/explain his anti-religious views, based on his REAL world travels and experiences in the REAL world, as opposed to the cyber ramblings of a few, disenchanted net/people than so be it. Peart is almost 60 now, he isn't interested in the opinions of an anonymous sub-culture of cyber cowards, who use "smilies" and "avatars" to claim a cyber "persona" and then run away... Peart is a REAL person living in a REAL world. He isn't particularly worried about "polarizing" his fans. He is far more interested in getting his views and opinions across. And much respect to him for that! Wake up peeps, he doesn't need your cash anymore. He is now writing for himself. I hope that Geddy sings Pearts lyrics with a full throated thundering roar.

    Any arguments here?

Ya know, any "polls" like this are so ridiculous and anyone who votes in this kind of crap is just simply childish. "BETTER" is a matter of taste and entirely subjective.... Music is not an olympic event folks... Better, faster, harder? How about playing for the song? Does that factor into it? If so, how does one "judge" that aspect? Polls are a cynical means in which to generate magazine sales. Best avoided...
  16. Aww, seemed like a nice kid. Kinda felt sorry for him.
  17. The OP needs a gentle walk through life with his/her carers and a generous slapping of ironic shock treatment... Interspersed with 50ml dosages of humor.
  18. QUOTE (Karena @ Jan 16 2012, 08:04 PM) The kick-azzism of those earlier songs softened the message and back then the audience was mostly stoned teenagers stoked to stick it to the man. I don't know anyone who had a problem with Freewill or Tom Sawyer - they rocked. Faithless, BU2B, not so much, plus you have an older less impressionable audience with their own established beliefs. It's a whole different vibe. Irregardless of the "kick-azzism" (whatever that means) or the sobriety levels of the audience at the time, Peart's message was quite apparent from the outset.
  19. QUOTE (Terrapin @ Jan 14 2012, 01:19 AM)QUOTE (lerxt1990 @ Jan 14 2012, 01:12 AM) QUOTE (Lerxst UK @ Jan 13 2012, 06:01 PM) I can't believe people are just now starting to appreciate (or not!) what Neil has been saying for years on the subject of religion. The track 'Freewill' was on a certain 'classic' album many moons ago was it not? It seems clear to me what was being said all those years ago. There seems little doubt to me that religion is primarily a control system that goes hand in hand with politics and can be equally as ferocious or as benign as its intenders wish it to be. Plus ca change, plus ce la meme chose! Freewill was about same topic. True. Then he lyrically got off it and gave us Spirit of Radio, Jacobs Ladder, and other great songs. The point is not expressing ideas about faith. The point is not becoming a bore. If you're "bored" you only have to move on! No one is keeping you in chains. Go and find a "better" lyricist who doesn't bore you mate. Of course, you have the right to comment. I am simply wondering why you would continue to read and comment on a subject that you are "bored" with?
  20. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jan 14 2012, 04:40 AM)QUOTE (Terrapin @ Jan 13 2012, 06:08 PM) Seeing as Peart wrote this more than 15 years ago, I think the lyrics are quite prophetic and sadly poingant... Like a shipwrecked mariner adrift on an unknown sea Clinging to the wreckage of the lost ship Fantasy I'm a castaway, stranded in a desolate land I can see the footprints in the virtual sand Net boy, net girl Send your signal 'round the world Let your fingers walk and talk And set you free Net boy, net girl Send your impulse 'round the world Put your message in a modem And throw it in the Cyber Sea Astronauts in the weightlessness of pixellated space Exchange graffiti with a disembodied race I can save the universe in a grain of sand I can hold the future in my virtual hand Let's dance tonight To a virtual song Press this key And you can play along Let's fly tonight On our virtual wings Press this key To see amazing things Like a pair of vagabonds who wave between two passing trains Or the glimpse of a woman's smile through a window in the rain I can smell her perfume, I can taste her lips I can feel the voltage from her fingertips Net boy, net girl Send your heartbeat round the world Let your fingers walk and talk And set you free Net boy, net girl Send your impulse 'round the world Put your message in a modem And throw it in the Cyber Sea Put your message in a modem And throw it in the Cyber Sea Peart kind of got it right that long ago.., I don't see how quoting embarrassingly bad lyrics can do anyone any good at this point. Embarrassingly prophetic more like ;-)
