  1. Just when I had almost forgotten about this. I would like to officially nominate this as the strangest Rush incident and TRF thread of 2010.
  2. Great show, but I do think it's lost some edge in the last couple of seasons. With Steve Carell leaving, they really should start winding the show down, but I'm afraid they'll just keep going for another 3-4 seasons. Part of the brilliance of the UK version was that it was short and sweet, and didn't wear out its welcome. Plus the sory arc for David Brent at the end was brilliant, and I really hope they come up with something similar for Michael Scott. And I REALLY hope they work in some kind of cameo with Ricky Gervais as David Brent before the end of the US version. Overall, I still prefer the UK version but the US version is very good.

It is cold comfort to the ones without it. To know how they struggled, how they suffered about it. Sorry you couldn't make it. Couldn't make it because my life's exotic & strange. I'd gladly exchange it for something a little more sane. BTW, I did pay a fabulous price for my vision of paradise (8th row in Vegas).

  5. QUOTE (tontonfranck @ Oct 26 2010, 03:18 PM)QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Oct 26 2010, 06:13 PM) i was just tired of seeing alot of the same with a few bones thrown in. You can't imagine how hard it is for me to read that!!!! Yeah, we've been a bit spoiled by Rush here in the US and Canada. BTW, I agree with the original post. This tour was one of my most enjoyable since VT. Everything was really top-notch: setlist, sound, stage design, videos, lights, merchandise, you name it.
  6. QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Oct 26 2010, 02:27 PM)heh i realize there's going to be a handful of ca songs in there but i'm just hoping they will shake up the rest of the list and not cater to the casual fan so much. it will be interesting to see what they do. 40% of me thinks they will shake things up from the last tour and the other 60% thinks they won't be doing much different. Well, if they play a lot of CA songs, they probably will play a lot of the hits to balance things out. Like it or not, casual fans make up a large part of the crowd. As much as I loved hearing Marathon, the response it got was nothing close to Subdivisions, Tom Sawyer, etc. I do think they'll play a large portion of CA. Maybe 9 songs as with S&A, maybe even the entire album as the second set. So I'm guessing the setlist will be lots of CA, lots of the hits, and hopefully a couple surprises.
  7. I'll watch TSN on cable or DVD, but can't see going to a theater for it. I thought Pirates of Silicon Valley (about Gates and Jobs) was pretty cool.
  8. Looks like there may be a meeting between Warners execs and the NZ goverment on Monday. Hopefully they can get this figured out and keep the production in NZ. That will be a true shame if they can't film in NZ, after all the hurdles these movies have finally cleared (Tolkien estate, MGM bankruptcy, director changes). If they do go outside of NZ, I really hope that they go to the UK or Ireland. After all, those are the landscapes that JRRT had in mind when writing the story. But I'm really hoping for NZ. BTW, has anyone noticed how much Peter Jackson seems to have aged in the last year or so. Yikes! I know that he lost a lot of weight after LOTR, but all this Hobbit wrangling seems to have taken a toll on him. Oh well, I'm sure the reward of a couple billion $ will be worth it.
  9. Is it so hard to... SPOILER!!! ...wait one more week?
  10. QUOTE (shaun3701 @ Oct 11 2010, 04:58 PM) The tour is over, right? Actually, the last date is 10/17 in Chile.
  11. QUOTE (Steel Rat @ Oct 5 2010, 03:16 AM)I'm starting to feel stupid for going to college. First of all, I have to pay $4000 a semester. I'm a music major. My mentors told me I should pursue a career in my main interest, and my interest is CLEARLY in music. So that's what they told me - "You should pursue music at the University of Iowa." Without thinking clearly, I said "Ok, sounds like a logical idea." I was facing the same exact choice back when I started school. I was a big music fan and guitar student (rock, jazz, classical), so I figured I would get a music degree. I took some music classes at community college (and loved it!) but started to wonder what my actual JOB would be after school. I was also good with computers/programming, so I finally decided to get computer degree and "real" job and pursue music on my own time. It worked out well, because I've had a good career and have continued playing music with my friends in bands (first original music, then cover bands). In retrospect, the trick may be to decide what exact job it is you want to do, and then figure out what you need to get there: college degree, training, internship, experience, etc. Of course, it's hard to figure this all out we're younger. Of my friends growing up, only one guy knew exactly what he wanted to do, was focused like a laser, and ended up achieving it. The rest of us have all done pretty well, but in more typical "boring" jobs.
  12. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Oct 6 2010, 06:29 PM)QUOTE (WIDE-ANGLE WATCHER @ Oct 6 2010, 03:58 PM) My focus was on the NEW fan and having a blank slate to work with If people want to read reviews prior to getting albums, God knows there's enough online sources where they can do that, including here. I personally do that a LOT. I've extensively studied sites like progarchives and rateyourmusic to help me decide what albums to go after or not. Even still, I disagree often enough that I know other people's opinions, even consensus ones, aren't always gonna match my own. I hope that anyone who spends even a modest amount of time on TRF will quickly come to realize that there's almost as many divergent opinions as there are people here, and I hope those people who are new Rush fans and make their way here will eventually check out all the albums and make up their own minds about each of them... Yeah, I've noticed that most newer/younger fans on TRF seem to have a much more favorable opinion of newer Rush than the older fans, and they're definitely not getting this viewpoint from TRF.
  13. QUOTE (udanax @ Oct 6 2010, 06:33 PM)I think I've posted this before, but in Subdivisions I always thought that "Unlike moths we drift into the city" was "Unlike mobs we drift into the city"... I also don't know half of the lyrics to Freewill... Isn't that supposed to be "drawn like moths?" My favorite is probably still "A Monday warrior, mean mean stride." (Not mine, posted by someone here on TRF.)
  14. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Oct 5 2010, 06:18 PM) They are going strong, it's just the whole aspect of are they putting out new music on a regular basis that's up to the level of quality of their past accomplishments that's up for debate. I would say no, but obviously others feel differently. RG, is there any hard rock/prog rock band from Rush's era who is still putting out new music in 2010 that's up to the level of their classic period? Honestly, I can't think of one. That's not an "excuse" for Rush, that's just "the way it is" (IMO).
  15. QUOTE (Steel Rat @ Oct 5 2010, 04:42 PM) I wish I could have actually seen them then. It's extremely depressing that I can only see them through old videos recorded long before I was born. Really? There are MANY great bands I missed seeing in their prime (Rush, Yes, Genesis, Zeppelin, Floyd, Hendrix, Beatles, etc.) but I don't think it's something to get depressed about.
  16. Where's Necromancer? He usually manages to liven up these smoking-pot-at-Rush-show threads. + + TRF =
  17. QUOTE (RUSHMAN999 @ Oct 5 2010, 02:08 PM)Damm i have not been on for a while but cant understand why everyone is so negative about what rush have done these guys are living legends in the uk http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RdqUIvhN4jo/SwkU_1DL3qI/AAAAAAAAGw4/EuWN79PBCwE/s320/curb.jpg Half empty or half full? It seems to be the eternal question here on TRF.
  18. Wow, why does a thread celebrating the discovery of Rush by new fans immediately turn into the usual "Old Rush Good New Rush Bad" argument? I agree that Rush's overall peak moment was probably around MP/PoW, but Rush is still doing extremely well compared to my other favorite bands from that era: Yes - Founding member thrown under the bus; now a glorified tribute band. Genesis - Probably done, from Phil's most recent comments. Pink Floyd - Probably done. Marillion - Still recording and touring, but not in the US. Rush may not still be in their "glory years," but they're definitely enjoying a kind of renaissance these days. Their live energy on the TM tour has been infectious, and the fan response extremely strong at the two shows I've seen. And Rush is about to embark on a freaking full-blown concept album with steampunk/sci-fi overtones! Even if you don't love the first two tracks, at least give Rush props for retaining such ambition at this point in their career. Anyway, I really don't understand why some New Rush Haters feel constantly compelled to tell everyone how much Rush sucks now compared to the "good old days."
  19. Enjoy the show! I do have to say that "1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre" is probably the most ridiculous name for a venue that I've ever heard in my life.
  20. QUOTE (danielmclark @ Sep 30 2010, 11:06 AM) I think he struggles with it because it's early in the set and he hasn't sung it since... I don't remember. Early 90's? How did he do with Spirit of Radio? Yeah, I think it's because it's early in the set. Also, singing TSOR and TSS back-to-back has got to be tough. If they're going to open with TSOR, they should probably pick some easier vocal song to follow. When I saw them in Vegas, I thought he struggled just a bit with the first couple of songs, but then he really seemed to settle in and his vocals sounded great the rest of the night.
  21. QUOTE (savagegrace26 @ Sep 28 2010, 02:13 PM) Are the sales really that much better? Platinum for DVD's is 100,000 copies versus 1 million for cd's. And I believe they count each disc separately. Whoops, I didn't know of the different certifications for DVDs versus CDs. Still, it seems like there's a lot of revenue to be made from the concert DVDs. And with Rush likely retiring in a few years, I think most fans would be glad to have a DVD from every remaining tour.
  22. QUOTE (GeddyLeeRoth @ Sep 23 2010, 09:22 PM)Geddy had an unpublicized nose job in the early eighties, which definately effects the voice. Who exactly would publicize a nose job? Send out a press release, I guess?
