  2. A fantastic song, but hardly a deep cut. It was a hit for them.

  5. Sorry about Paranoid. Honestly this poll is kind of all over the place. I'm all for AFTK winning myself, but I know there are more fans of Hems, MP, and PeW on this forum that AFTK. It's a Rush board, so them winning is not surprising. But this does sort of illustrate my entirely subjective view that AFTK is a really overrated (by the fan base) album. Some pretty iconic albums, including from Rush, that lost to it. How can an album as great as AFTK be overrated???
  6. I love every minute of London Calling. It's held up as well as any classic rock album. All this talk about London Calling without anyone mentioning (i don't think it was mentioned) the best song on the album....Brand New Cadillac!!
  7. Feedback = George Lazenby OHMSS is one of the best Bond movies! Lazenby is cruelly under rated as Bond. Have you seen the documentary on him becoming Bond? It is brilliant! I haven't. I have read a lot of how he got the role, but never saw that. Thanks.
  8. Love it. A 5 star tune for me. I liked all of the "hits" form the solo 1D guys.
  9. I find the Stones to be more of singles band. They've got some great songs but I've yet to find a Stones album that I can listen to all the way through. There's too many songs that are either fake country, pseudo RnB, pop pap, morose ballads etc. And even the songs that rock don't rock hard enough! I like some Stones songs like that but I wish they had more balls, especially in the guitar department. The one thing that I can point to that doesn;t really work well for me with The Stones is the fake country thing .. The other stuff I love - Fool To Cry, Angie, Hot Stuff - that would probably be the pop pap, morose ballad, pseudo R&B category but I love those songs .. Dead Flowers is a song I would like a lot better if Mick hadn't hammed it up I don't know why they do that fake country stuff at all, makes no sense. Duck, you've heard Michael Schenker talk about how he was asked to join The Stones back in 1974-75, right ?? I can;t imagine how that would have worked -- but I can somehow hear Mick Jagger singing "Let It Roll" !! He would have made them into an essential band for true music fans and not just posers who pretend to like music. It's just that MOST people are posers who pretend to like music so there's more money to be made from them. What does this post even mean?
  10. Couldn't disagree more about Arthur. In my opinion the best Kinks album hands down. Perhaps one of the most under rated albums in the rock and roll era.
  11. These are the only Rush songs that I will never listen to again. RIvendell Tai Shan High Water Sweet Miracle
  12. Mock Chicago style pizza all you want but at least it won't seamlessly fit into stories like these... (The scene: A cocktail party in Georgetown on a Saturday night. An elegant well dressed woman approaches a man holding a gin and tonic. Chamber music is playing in the background.) Woman, introducing herself: Hi, I'm Valerie Winthrop des Rochers, and you? Man: My name is Backer. Rick N. Backer, or Richard Nelson Backer. VWdR: Nice to have the pleasure of your acquaintance, What do you do, Mr. Backer? RNB: I'm a lawyer, and you? VWdR: My husband (gestures to a man holding another conversation) James is counsel to the chief lobbyist for the National Association of Roofers. He's here to assist regarding getting a tax break through for roofers who use American tar and nails. RNB (feigning interest): Oh, that's interesting. This is quite the party. VWdR: Yes, I love soirees like this. James says it's something to look forward to after a long week of lobbying. At least being here in DC means we don't have to associate with any of those roofers. They call themselves "entreprenuers" (chuckles), but they couldn't even qualify for a second rate B school like Wharton (incredulous chuckle). Oh well, I guess these pearls (clutches pearls) don't pay for themselves. But enough about that, Claire (the hostess) went all out with these hors d'oeuvres. The pate' is divine but the cheese and crackers is out of this world. RNB: (trying to figure out what she means by the cheese and crackers until he figures it out). Oh, you mean the New York style pizza? VWdR: (shuddering) Please. It's cheese and crackers. Calling it pizza makes it seem just so (her tone turns disparaging) ethnic. RNB: (tries to think of a response. Just then he realizes that the chamber orchestra is playing Second Nature) Well, the food is great but the music is even better. VWdR: Yes, isn't it? This is Second Nature by Rush. Quite beautiful in its innocuousness. I'm so glad that Peart ended his association with that ghastly Rand person. I guess everyone goes through stages. (Chuckles dismissively) If the next song they play is Mission I swear this be the event of the winter. Well, so glad to have met your acquaintance. Enjoy the rest of your evening. RNB: Thanks, good conversation, Hold Your Fire, and cheese and crackers, what's not to enjoy.... (Chamber orchestra segues from Second Nature to Longer Than by Dan Fogelberg) That was brilliant. We need more of this. Much much more. Thanks, I appreciate the kind words, but to revive a cliche, friends don't let friends eat bad pizza. I couldn't just sit around and let RNB continue to consume cheese and crackers when the tasty delight of Chicago style pizza is within reach. And I hate to bring Aquinas and one of the principles of "just war" theory into play here but there is a reasonable chance of success with RNB. It's not like JR, where his love for the synth era and frequent consumption of cigars means that in matters of taste probably any meaningful intervention would fall on deaf, synth loving (but I repeat myself) ears. RNB already understands the concept of blandness and how it applies to music with his disdain for PoW and HYF yet for some reason he has no trouble with tastelessness when it comes to pizza. Maybe it's because being from the Eastern seaboard he's loathe to admit the Midwest has produced a product of such quality that it puts that region to shame. He certainly can't have tried both and considered NY style superior. Maybe like Peart admitted in Mission, he's just given up having truly good things and big dreams and settled for mediocrity in the middle of his life. There's something there that's recoverable, though. I'm not ready giving up trying to find it. Love the humor, disagree on the pizza though :) et tu, Lerxtus? ETA: Can we at least agree that PoW and HYF are snoozefests that betrayed the promise, energy, and resolve shown in the Classic era? Chicago pizza is over rated. PoW is a great album. Nuff said.
  13. Feedback = George Lazenby OHMSS is one of the best Bond movies! Lazenby is cruelly under rated as Bond.
  14. Dog Years and The Speed of Love are really good songs!!
  15. Zep IV. Definitely not London Calling, A fine album that's a bit over rated as a darling of the critics and Rolling Stone magazine.
  16. This is a man of excellent taste. Pizza: New York style or Chicago? The synth era snoozers are probably played at boring cocktail parties where they serve cheese and crackers, and their pizzalike equivalents. No one wants to be there, but the music is largely inoffensive, if rarely interesting. The prog and PeW and MP classic eras are for those who settle for nothing less than excellence. Chicago style is the pizza equivalent. Chicago style pizza is second rate.

  18. No it doesn't. :)
  19. Show us one of those five-second snippets, please. :D "...YOUR EYES OUT" in hot rails to hell "Cause it's hot" in Then Came the Last Days of May
  20. True story. When PeW came out I was so disappointed in it that i gave it away to a friend of mine. I realized the error of my ways rather shortly after giving it away and it has become one of my favorite 5 albums of all time.
  21. I have a nostalgia connection with this version, too. Like you, I saw it when it was still in theaters. My mom and I had gone to Austin to do some Christmas shopping at the mall and I pestered into taking me to see the movie on our way home. I would've been 11 at the time. I watched it again a few months ago -- you're right, Jessica Lange does act stoned through the whole thing, but my God, she sure had that "girl next door" look down pat. I fell deeply in love with Lange after seeing this in the theater. At the same age as you JARG.
