  1. realistically speaking, he belongs somewhere in the second half of such a list, and if the list includes non-rock guitarists he probably wouldn't make it at all. That being said, if the standard that they're setting to compare against is Bruce Springsteen, Alex should place near the top.
  2. it would be better (/actually music as opposed to just a single sound) if there were some form of variety or forward movement
  3. QUOTE (Tommy Sawyer @ Nov 26 2011, 11:11 PM) Ian McDonald (On In the Court...) he was so good that he became greg lake.
  4. two straight minutes of a single chord being looped over and over is "okay" in your book?
  5. whatever, i don't expect to change anyone's opinion. just voicing my own. I find it curious that i'm perceived as siding with Can -- i'm not siding with anybody on this one.
  6. QUOTE (Pags @ Nov 27 2011, 03:10 PM) QUOTE (fledgehog @ Nov 27 2011, 02:06 PM) TRF -- the only place where making fun of poor grammar is considered worse than calling someone a ***t. You're not being very observant about this, or you're not very bright. But I had words toward both sides on this, and one of those sides decided to keep going with it, even further than before and on the tail of the Admin's warning. Is the bulb getting any brighter? I'm not arguing with the decision to ban Can, my point is that tick throws out far more abrasive personal attacks left and right, many (not all) of which are unwarranted, and has only ever received so much as a warning as far as i can tell. Why does he get off so much more easily? because he's older and therefore "wiser"? give me a f***ing break

  8. QUOTE (Akron162 @ Nov 26 2011, 08:58 PM) QUOTE (Oracle @ Nov 26 2011, 07:39 PM) Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steven Wilson (if you like that whiny vocal), Rikard Sjoblom, and Jon Anderson immediately come to mind. Well, Phil Collins is tolerable, but i wouldnt list him because his main work is anything but prog. oh really,
  9. Steven Wilson is a very personal singer. I happen to like his style too. But from a technical standpoint he is horrible. Although i don't quite see how you can describe him as whiny?
  10. Geddy's voice has sounded strained and tired in live performance since the early '90s, and has lost its power in the studio since around Vapor Trails. It is impressive that someone his age who has been singing the way he does for so long is able to produce any of the notes he does at all, but that doesn't make it good.
  11. QUOTE (Union 5-3992 @ Nov 26 2011, 08:05 PM) Geddy Lee maybe 1978 and earlier...
  12. QUOTE (GrandDesigner @ Nov 25 2011, 10:47 PM) People from other states, if cars are making lefts on one-lane roads and there's room to go into a shoulder to go around them on the right, do you go around them or do you sit behind them and wait until the car is able to make the turn? in New York, most people drive around them in the shoulder, but it's still illegal and could potentially be harmful on the rare occasion that an emergency vehicle needs to get through the shoulder.
  13. whenever someone corrects my english, i'm glad that they did because i come away with a better understanding of the language and will probably avoid making the same mistake in the future, i don't call them a ***t. don't know how you can figure tj to be the asshole and not tick here.
  14. i was stuck behind someone today -- not sure if they were intoxicated, horrible at driving, or GrandDesigner attempting to make a left turn, but either way they're a shit driver. the road is a 2-lane highway (double yellow line, one lane in each direction) with lots of twists and turns, hills, really a fun road when there's no traffic! I was behind an oooold pontiac grand am who was swerving and having trouble maintaining a speed. Already i was cautious and making sure to keep a little distance -- and then all of a sudden this idiot is completely in the other lane. not a careless veer, all four tires had completely crossed the double yellow. After about 10 seconds of this i gave a couple honks to catch his attention, and he slowly drifted back into the proper lane, and then before long he was in the shoulder on the right. thank god i only had to be behind him for about a mile and a half...who knows what kind of trouble he got in further up the road....
  15. QUOTE (GrandDesigner @ Nov 23 2011, 03:36 PM) QUOTE (fledgehog @ Nov 23 2011, 12:29 PM) QUOTE (GrandDesigner @ Nov 23 2011, 07:29 AM) I HATE HATE HATE when people are making right turns on a highway or major road, and there's a massive shoulder they can easily drive in to make that turn, but instead they decide to turn from the right lane on the major road, thus slowing everyone down. Get in the f***ing shoulder and turn you asshole!!!! I've never even heard of anyone merging into the shoulder, and I should hope it's not a common practice for anyone, seeing as how it's neither legal nor practical. Almost any car can make it to 60mph in under 10 seconds. If that's not fast enough for you, either the merging vehicle pulled out too late and cut you off, or you're going too fast and being unnecessarily impatient, but using the shoulder as a makeshift on-ramp isn't the right way to solve either of these problems. I'm talking about when they're pulling into a shopping center or something. Highway was perhaps the wrong word, I'm talking more like a major road with stores on each side and a shoulder. There's no reason to make a right into a shopping center from a lane that goes 50 mph when there is a shoulder to make a right from that won't cause anyone to stop short. This goes hand in hand with lack of signals. I've never seen ANYONE get a ticket for going in the shoulder to turn into a shopping center from a main road. turning OFF a main road using the shoulder is every bit as illegal as merging onto one using the shoulder. The shoulder is intended for emergencies only. If you turned into a parking lot the way you described on a road test, you'd fail automatically. Would things be more convenient if there were left and right-turn lanes for every driveway? sure, but the shoulder isn't an acceptable substitute for a right-turn lane.
  16. QUOTE (tick @ Nov 23 2011, 08:53 AM) Its too bad all there employees need these shitty jobs so much. And here's the reason that they can do it. There are tons of people (mostly of the younger generation) who would gladly work to hell and back to pick up some extra cash. For every employee who wants the day off to spend with their family, there is someone else, probably unemployed, who wishes they could be picking up an hourly pay instead of spending the holiday at home. The only problem that lies in the way is that there's no practical way to redistribute jobs and shifts for this sort of purpose. It's impractical from a company's point of view to hire people or have them on standby for only a few days out of the year. As a matter of simple principle, it's a business's duty to provide their clients with the best service possible. The only reason businesses have begun staying open on holidays is because the consumer demand is there -- and it wouldn't surprise me at all to discover that some, if not most, of the people who go shopping on black friday, thanksgiving, and other holidays that are actually "sacred" by definition, are the same people who think it's disgusting that people are required to work on these days.

  18. QUOTE (Steel Rat @ Nov 22 2011, 08:33 PM) The worst drivers in the world are the people who have ever honked their horn in rage. I see plenty of terrible drivers every day, but I've never felt the urge to honk at anyone in my life. Honking at someone you don't even know is the equivalent of spitting in their face and saying "f**k you, dipshit." No class. not quite. The horn is intended to be used when you need the attention of somebody else on the road. for example, if someone cuts you off and nearly causes an accident, you use the horn to let them know that you're there. if they didn't notice you, it's a wake-up call for them, and if they did notice you then it's to let them know that they f*cked up. If I'm angry at somebody's driving, I'm more likely to be swearing up a storm (generally to the amusement of my passengers) than riding the horn, but if the situation calls for it i'll use the horn. It doesn't make you a jerk. If you're a shitty driver, making the roads shit for everyone else, you deserve to be called out on your shit. if anything, it's the other party who usually has the "f**k you, asshole" mentality towards the horn-blower (assuming that THEY can do no wrong, and that anyone who has the nerve to honk at them is more at fault and too impatient/aggressive a driver).
  19. QUOTE (danielmclark @ Nov 21 2011, 07:34 PM) If you've never tried it, try putting yourself on a $1500 bicycle and riding on a two lane highway (not an interstate but a rural highway) sometime. Why would I (or anyone) ever need to do that?
  20. if there is, it's probably horrible, incredibly basic, poorly laid-out and borderline-useless. to make "real" electronic music you'd need a program that costs several hundred dollars.
  21. never understood why people drink excessively to begin with -- when it gets to the point that you're throwing up i'd imagine you've already past the point of fun. Going cold turkey seems a bit overboard unless you have any suspicions of becoming an alcoholic -- but good for you for making the choice either way.
  22. as much as i hate tailgaters, i'm not going to take the time out of my day to slow down just to piss them off. i have places to be too. i'll either speed up myself, pull over and let them pass, or just deal with it.
  23. QUOTE (danielmclark @ Nov 17 2011, 08:02 PM) And I'm still leery of of the 'what if I'm not driving' scenario. My car gets tagged, I get hit with the fine, not whoever was driving. first of all, let me say i disagree with the whole "black box" monitoring idea on principle. i think it's invasive, unnecessary and not at all constructive. fines and punishments should go to the owner of the car, regardless? What about single-car families? 2, 3, maybe even 4 or more people could be sharing a single car -- and it's fair for one person to be blamed for mistakes that ANY of them make? what about couples that share a car? siblings? parents/children? there are a ton of valid scenarios, not just someone lending their car to a friend, and not to take into account who the driver is makes it a broken system.
