you can't "make The Wall better" by editing it. As a rock opera, it was carefully written and crafted to tell a story, even what you call "filler". Picking and choosing the "best" parts of The Wall and trimming it down to half its size is like picking and choosing the "best" chapters from a book. EDIT: just re-read your post more carefully...how the f**k is The Trial filler? it's essential.

QUOTE (tick @ Nov 30 2011, 07:22 PM) QUOTE (rotting @ Nov 30 2011, 01:29 AM) 100% the most boring " unorganic " live act one can witness.....I can't believe people are so obsessed over these guys. I did like images and words. But I cannot stand the lack of guts live. When unorganic becomes a word, come back and see us. didn't someone around here recently flip a gigantic shit over being corrected on his English, calling it disrespectful and whatnot?

probably some old timers who don't frequent any more haven't realized yet that i dont have Hold Your Fire as mine any more. In terms of personality definition mine is actually incredibly fitting.

Geddy's voice has sounded strained and tired in live performance since the early '90s, and has lost its power in the studio since around Vapor Trails. It is impressive that someone his age who has been singing the way he does for so long is able to produce any of the notes he does at all, but that doesn't make it good.

whenever someone corrects my english, i'm glad that they did because i come away with a better understanding of the language and will probably avoid making the same mistake in the future, i don't call them a ***t. don't know how you can figure tj to be the asshole and not tick here.

QUOTE (tick @ Nov 23 2011, 08:53 AM) Its too bad all there employees need these shitty jobs so much. And here's the reason that they can do it. There are tons of people (mostly of the younger generation) who would gladly work to hell and back to pick up some extra cash. For every employee who wants the day off to spend with their family, there is someone else, probably unemployed, who wishes they could be picking up an hourly pay instead of spending the holiday at home. The only problem that lies in the way is that there's no practical way to redistribute jobs and shifts for this sort of purpose. It's impractical from a company's point of view to hire people or have them on standby for only a few days out of the year. As a matter of simple principle, it's a business's duty to provide their clients with the best service possible. The only reason businesses have begun staying open on holidays is because the consumer demand is there -- and it wouldn't surprise me at all to discover that some, if not most, of the people who go shopping on black friday, thanksgiving, and other holidays that are actually "sacred" by definition, are the same people who think it's disgusting that people are required to work on these days.

well, I don't use itunes or windows media player because they are two of the most repulsive computer programs to ever exist, but i am rather obsessive with my tags (and the folder structure on my hard drive). my rateyourmusic account serves as an ultimate database for me, however. I've given up on keeping genre tags -- too many genres are vague and too many uploaders abuse the genre tag field. When i'm browsing my library i do it based on artist anyway.

what is this, f***ing elementary school? I'll talk at a reasonable volume in the library if i damn well feel like it. People checking out books need to talk, library staff need to talk, groups working on research projects (especially in college campus libraries) need to talk. Unless they're screaming their heads off, deal with it, and if it seriously bothers you that much, buy a pair of damn earplugs. I also like how hatred for rap got dragged into a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with rap (or music of any kind). Maturity at its peak.

Major labels: NO MORE CDs after 2012
fledgehog replied to Presto-digitation's topic in Music Of The Spheres
interesting. I just hope that they distribute in lossless -- no way in hell am i paying money for lossy audio. I don't particularly care about packaging, just about the only reason i buy CDs any more is if i can't find a good download online. After ripping CDs they end up either lost in a pile of crap on my desk, or in the car. The CD medium is outdated, but up to this point, progress in audio technology has always resulted in increased sound quality...i hope the switch to digital doesn't result in a decline. -

QUOTE (RodrigoAltaf @ Oct 21 2011, 05:19 AM) I can't remember on which tour/album exactly, but at some point after Scenes From A Memory portnoy had a chat with James about improving his vocals or he'd be fired from the band. That may explain why they haven't had any contact after Mike left... i believe that was the six degrees tour. Portnoy has also openly bad-mouthed James' singing in public interviews and the like.

after seeing the show live, i disagree even more with the people who oppose the drum solo. Mangini is musical and technical at a level that most drummers, even the big names, can only dream of. Unlike someone like Portnoy (who just hits a bunch of shit really loud for several minutes), Mangini plays a solo that is engaging and intriguing, and unlike someone like Peart, he changes it up every night rather than playing the same contrived and rehearsed solo night after night. Anyone who doesn't embrace the opportunity to see one of the world's finest drummers performing a solo right in front of them is just incredibly thick. Sure, they could have foregone the solo and thrown in another 4-5 minute song, but the way I see it, this tour's secondary purpose (behind promoting the new album), is to showcase Mangini. The show itself was very fine -- Periphery opened and they unfortunately disappointed. The mix was way too bass-heavy, the drummer had no sense of dynamics and the songs sounded really same-y after the first couple. I'd listened to their album a while back and I've heard good things about them, so I was expecting a little more. In the long run i guess it's still better than having to deal with Trivium, however. Bridges in the Sky was a PERFECT opener. the Inception intro tape went really well into the song's ethereal opening, and the whole band coming in was enough to completely blow you away. Other highlights included These Walls (which I didn't even know they were playing so it was a pleasant surprise for me), Ytse Jam, which sounds even BETTER with mangini at the kit, the Wait for Sleep/Far From Heaven acoustic set (James especially gave a heart-wrenching delivery of the latter), Caught in a Web (one of the most energetic displays of music I've ever seen, and LaBrie was ON FIRE for the entirety of this song), and of course the closer of the main set, Breaking All Illusions was the highlight of the show (as it is the highlight of the album). A couple incidents from the show -- Petrucci's guitar cut out about a minute into Bridges in the Sky. His techs had him up and running about a minute later, but even while he had no sound he just kept right on playing, and the rest of the band kept their shit together perfectly during what would have been a trainwreck for almost any other band. Petrucci recieved a huge cheer when his sound came back to life. during On the Backs of Angels, somebody threw a small red hat onto the stage, which LaBrie picked up and wore for about a minute, and then proceeded to hang on Mangini's drum rack. Mangini then took the hat and donned it himself, but it fell off in a matter of seconds Mangini is represented as a genie in his cartoon form. Everyone in the band seems to be at the top of their game right now. This tour is not to be missed! A+ show if you ask me

QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ Oct 14 2011, 07:30 PM) QUOTE (Del_Duio @ Oct 14 2011, 11:25 AM) I was listening to Awake again in the car yesterday and it hit me: Do you think DT will play Space Dye Vest now that MP isn't in the band? I know Moore left a bad taste when he split, but maybe if it was mostly with Portnoy they'd play this awesome song finally I heard that Jordan Rudess wants to play it but the other guys don't. I'd love to see them do it sometime. Jordan performed it at a solo concert a while back (with James LaBrie guest appearing on vocals). It's floating around youtube and the like if you want to see what it sounds like.

Listening through Mahler's entire symphony cycle for the second time in my life...this time Evgeny Svetlanov and the USSR State Symphony Orchestra's recordings. Hopefully this time I won't get hung up listening to the second symphony over and over again

if f***ing Scarsick of all albums left you feeling impressed, Remedy Lane and The Perfect Element will probably leave you in a week-long shocked daze. Give those a try.

last night's episode left me unimpressed, but that's probably because i was watching it in between Community and Parks and Rec, which are the two greatest things to happen to TV in a while. Although I will say that Jim's book was hilarious, and the closing sequence was brilliant.

i wish Wagner had written more music for orchestra without voice. His musicality is amazing, but it's difficult for me to be able to handle an entire opera (or even an entire act of one) all at once.

really, people are complaining about the production on this album? honestly, it sounds better than anything they've done since Six Degrees.
