  1. whatever garbage was playing on the radio. Lady antebellum? could ahve been.
  2. If we're including classical music, I'd like to nominate the finale movement of Mahler's 9th symphony: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
  3. Freddie Mercury was literally dying when he recorded the vocals for this song -- too weak to stand up, but he sings with more power and passion than ever. That, IMO takes an already depressing song and makes it heartbreaking.
  4. 9gag is where reddit reposts go to die (mixed in with some awkward, almost-funny original content).
  5. QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ Dec 19 2011, 07:15 PM) Off topic, but is anyone else a member of Dreamtheaterforums.org? I just joined (same username as here) but I'm waiting for the admin to confirm my account. can't stand DTF. Maybe they've changed in recent years, but my memory of them is a bunch of perpetually fellating fanboys who adamantly love every millisecond of everything Dream Theater related (in fact I believe there was even a rule saying that you weren't allowed to say anything bad about the band or its output -- where's the fun in discussion if everyone's agreeing with each other?). I was IP banned about 3-4 years ago after receiving three warnings, one for a "personal attack" (can't remember what I said but it certainly didn't justify the accusation), and two for simply MENTIONING that i downloaded whatever was the new porcupine tree album at the time (fear of a blank planet?) -- not even mentioning any sources. It's not quite as bad as mike portnoy's forums were (again, i haven't been there in a long long time, and i know that Weymolith quit so that probably changed a lot of things). I suppose it's a good source of information and news about the band, but there are much better places in terms of discussion. Dream Theater fans are some of the most annoying people on the internet.
  6. f**k going to stores. Except supermarkets, those are okay.
  7. I would never entrust someone else, especially parents, with musical selection for me (and, in return, unless there's a release that i KNOW somebody actively wants, i will never buy music as a gift for anyone else). When buying music for someone else, there are tons of factors to consider -- what do they already have? what do they actually want? Just buying them something by "one of their favorite bands" isn't saying much. So you know who their favorite bands are -- congratulations, you probably just bought them a CD they already have. The best route to take would be an amazon gift card if you ask me.
  8. QUOTE (ReRushed @ Dec 16 2011, 11:34 PM) QUOTE (Ancient Ways @ Dec 16 2011, 09:14 PM) QUOTE (fledgehog @ Dec 15 2011, 11:43 PM) Either way, it's still a chord (or more accurately, a polychord), just being played by multiple instruments. you can argue this but, if you do, then everything is a chord including single notes since there are overtones/harmonics any time you strike a note. Also, you would be able to freeze any song at any time and say that whatever is happening is a chord including the percussion since they are creating tones at specific pitches. I prefer the usual definition of chord that I describe as two or more notes sounded "simultaneously" on a single instrument. I always thought a chord was simply defined as three or more notes or pitches played simultaneously. I never understood that to imply using one instrument. that is very true. By the "single instrument" rule, a symphony orchestra would almost never play any chords.

  10. QUOTE (Tommy Sawyer @ Dec 14 2011, 01:12 AM) Not to offend anyone, but the responses in this thread are very amusing. Everyone is talking about The Wall as if it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. As if it is something better than a rock album, as if it transcends all standards of music. that's neither the attitude, nor the point of anyone in this thread. The Wall should be left in tact, not because it's the greatest album ever and every minute is pure gold, but because it's not merely another album, it's a rock opera. Picking and choosing your favorites and listening to the album that way is comparable to an opera company performing only their favorite numbers from an opera, a movie theater screening only their favorite scenes from a movie, or for an example that's more relatable to you, listening to only every other section of 2112. When there's an underlying reason for the existence of the whole, you don't simply disregard the parts that aren't quite as good, because they serve their purpose too. If all you want to hear is Another Brick in the Wall and Comfortably Numb you might as well just go out and buy a greatest hits CD.
  11. you can't "make The Wall better" by editing it. As a rock opera, it was carefully written and crafted to tell a story, even what you call "filler". Picking and choosing the "best" parts of The Wall and trimming it down to half its size is like picking and choosing the "best" chapters from a book. EDIT: just re-read your post more carefully...how the f**k is The Trial filler? it's essential.
  12. honestly, as a 19-year-old, i can say cash is probably the best route to take. if you feel like that's not "special" enough just give it in the form of a gift card or gift cards. Electronic drums are pricey but if you're willing to spend the money that'd make a good gift too. Don't get Dr. Dre beats. for anyone. ever. they're overrated and honestly only good for hip-hop type music, you can get far better headphones for like 1/2 the price.
  13. if you are paying for it yourself (as opposed to parents/family/guardians), you'll probably have a much easier time applying for financial aid. You're incredibly unlikely to get a full ride that way, but you can probably do pretty well. Many schools also have student work programs for people in your situation -- getting an on-campus job will also boost your available funds. of course, worst case scenario, community college is better than no college, but if you have a particular school or program that you have your heart set on, why not go for it?
  14. QUOTE (reani14 @ Dec 4 2011, 01:17 AM) a few people say that alex was even lucky to get in it at all. I dont know why people dont respect him or even ever heard of him. hes great. Hes way better than kurt Cobain. Because realistically he isn't one of the 100 best guitarists in the world, nor did he break any huge new grounds stylistically. I'm not discrediting his guitar skills, I'm just saying there are at least 100 guitarists who are more deserving of a spot on the list. Unfortunately, most of those guitarists AREN'T on the list, and if they are they're improperly placed. On a different note, anyone who doesn't think Mark Knopfler is one of the finest guitarists ever needs to have their head examined. He's a master of subtlety, dynamic and tone...a lot of that is due to the infinitely more difficult finger-picking style he plays with.
  15. Dad listens to what you would expect someone who was a teenager in the late '60s to listen to. He had a lot of influence indirectly -- in my middle school years I began browsing his CD collection and got introduced to prog via bands like Yes, King Crimson and Pink Floyd. Mom listens mostly to classical. This influence was felt, but not until much later in my life (around the second half of high school). Although my broader/larger-picture musical interests have their roots in my parents', they aren't necessarily a direct carbon copy of them. For example the kinds of classical that I enjoy and the kind sof classical that my mother enjoys are almost polar opposites/inverse to each other. And of course, certain genres are entirely overlooked by my parents. Neither of them is responsible for getting me into any sort of jazz, metal, ska, electronic music, etc...
  16. i can't say ive ever had a problem with anyone talking louder than the movie...if they're talking softer than the movie, who cares? I also don't care about texting.

  18. QUOTE (tick @ Nov 30 2011, 07:22 PM) QUOTE (rotting @ Nov 30 2011, 01:29 AM) 100% the most boring " unorganic " live act one can witness.....I can't believe people are so obsessed over these guys. I did like images and words. But I cannot stand the lack of guts live. When unorganic becomes a word, come back and see us. didn't someone around here recently flip a gigantic shit over being corrected on his English, calling it disrespectful and whatnot?
  19. probably some old timers who don't frequent any more haven't realized yet that i dont have Hold Your Fire as mine any more. In terms of personality definition mine is actually incredibly fitting.
  20. I suppose the story would be more enjoyable and humane if it ended with the $100 going into the company CEO's pocket?
