  1. It couldn't hurt to listen to more of her catalog, but I don't know you'll find many revelatory gems in there. She had a style ("gimmick" if you're feeling uncharitable) and much of her work is in that vein. It is that style, though, that made her larger than the sum of her songs; her look, the "tragic artist" trope; her being "of the moment" when mid-century was having a revival (early Adele, Mad Men, etc.), the possibility of really good drag looks -- she was famous in a way that transcended just the music. My $.02.
  2. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/08/europe/chechnya-music-ban-scli-intl Chechnya bans all music deemed too fast or too slow >>Minister of Culture Musa Dadayev announced the decision to limit all musical, vocal and choreographic compositions to a tempo ranging from 80 to 116 beats per minute (BPM) at a meeting Friday, the Russian state new agency TASS reported.<<
  3. Preach, brother! Yes; if it's a foul in the first minute, it's a foul in the last minute.
  4. (wouldn't "Waterloo" suggest the ending of something, rather than the beginning? asking for a friend . . . )
  5. Based on the way the Iowa player threw her head back like she'd been shot, she was definitely trying to create a decision there, so if it had gone the other way, my money would be on some complaining.
  6. I've thought for years it was sort of suspicious there was so much less fighting in the playoffs. It was like everyone collectively said, "Alright, time to get serious about this playing hockey thing."
  7. Attention BluesChica! I kinda like the looks of this hot dog: I'll pay for the shipping, of course . . .
  8. Drawback because it's a road game, or just Warsaw generally?
  9. Spare a thought for the Diamondbacks' fans: they score 14 runs in an inning to start the season, and have now lost in extra innings with a pitcher batting! Ah, the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Meanwhile, in the Royals four losses, they been leading or tied going into the ninth in all four! And the Cardinals continue their quest to make giving Kid Marmol and extension look like an iffy decision. Baseball!
  10. This was Ben Lindbergh's prediction on the Effectively Wild podcast. Well, not the selling the team part, but the .500 part.
  11. Thanks for the memories. RIP.
  12. You Can Still Rock in America Don't Tell Me You Love Me Sing Me Away Night Ranger
  13. That will have to wait until the 40th Anniversary of Test For Echo.
  14. From the perspective of pure riffage, I'm going with Page. So many great riffs in a pretty short creative peak.
  15. Full disclosure: I saw the Sting version as a teenager, liked it well enough, decided to read the book, hated the book, forgot most of it right away. I know people are whining the new films don't stick closely enough to the books (What? No Spice Guild?!?!), but the films work fine as a straightforward fight between two rich families. "Spice" could just as easily be gold, or oil, or unobtanium, whatever. It's a classic "rise to power" story, and all the background mythology is moot, as far as this viewer is concerned. Whenever they started spouting off about the Kwisatz Haderach (sp., definitely), my brain did the Homer Simpson thing where I'm imagining bears riding in little Shriners' cars. I was just waiting for more shots of spaceships taking off and landing, more BWAAANNNGGGGHHHHH from the soundtrack.
  16. ***SPOILERS AHEAD**** I know this story comes from some pretty successful books, but it felt to me -- as a non-book reader -- that they were making it up as they went along.
