  1. Couple things popped up. This movie is before the march of political correctness.Had to explain the term Fag, and why it is now considered offensive. It was a constructive conversation. I kind of feel like that's a necessary conversation, even in the age where we like to sterilize and insulate all language, yeah? I feel like the earlier a kid understands the nuances of the varying levels of appropriateness in language, the easier it becomes for them to express themselves in an agreeable way and detect meaning and intention in other people's language. Just because in today's society we like to delay this sort of connection from happening doesn't mean the word fag, and its problematic nature, stops existing.
  2. Out of the officially released concerts, Geddy probably sounded best on Grace Under Pressure Tour. Great control, great vibrato, and, at least to me, a very attractive vocal tone.
  3. I enjoy each Def Leppard album more than the previous. Listening to Slang right now and really digging it. I'd literally not heard anything else from them except for a few cheesy radio hits. Regardless of whether or not they stay a part of my regular listening catalog, I've gained a higher appreciation for them. Also, since I've gotten in the habit of misspelling the name of each of my playlists, this week's is called Deaf Leopard.
  4. so damn bored somebody talk to me
  5. The problem isn't that they played it rough; it's that they played it while trying to stick to the original arrangement and did it poorly. If they'd done their own thing, played with it, made the song their own, which might've involved playing it more aggressively than they did, it wouldn't have been so bad.
  6. I've got a few possibilities on my mind after we finish Def Leppard and do Kansas.
  7. Is there a list of who gets to pick for each subsequent week?
  8. Aw. I think they can be hit and miss but for me, at the very least, they're good for fun background music that doesn't demand a lot of mental investment.
  9. As an artist, it's complicated because you can most definitely do a work justice without necessarily being faithful to it. I find that the only real benchmark for good quality when doing a cover is that the artist should ask themselves, "is this strong enough to hold up on its own?" if yes, then I find that in all cases, fans will like it, because it doesn't need the support of nostalgia to gather approval, and most importantly it does not gather scorn for deviating from the original work. Covers, and homages in general, can go two extremes: you can replicate the work mostly authentically and add a little bit of your own personal special touch or you can do a mostly original work with just a little hint of derivation from the source, sort of to say, "this is what inspired me".
  10. It's not about me doing a better job. It's about being listenable. Check out this one:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uPs3Pk0mrg I really like this version! The soft keyboards are a really nice touch. Yeah, Bach and Vai tried but I don't think they nailed it at all. Too sloppy and not their style in the first place.
  11. My father has a surround sound stereo and, basically since we've lived in this house, he'd have evenings where he'd just chill and play some Pink Floyd or Deep Purple. That's what originally got me into prog rock; just being a 10 year old listening to that wonderful masterpiece, entranced by the incredibly high fidelity. I remember sitting down at the age of thirteen with the lyrics to Time and actually paying serious attention to the entire thing and connecting a little too hard with it; I decided that I most definitely wouldn't waste my time, and that I'd model my future into a present I'd be proud of in 10 years' time. Pretty philosophical stuff for a 13 year old, but hey, I'm different now, so I like to think the goals were mostly successful. :) also 43th lol
  12. They shouldn't have picked Red Barchetta and Tom Sawyer. Some of the rougher Rush songs, maybe?
  13. I feel like Majesty will eventually become Ghost's Tom Sawyer. Also, am I the only one who's happy to see more heavy metal bands coming out with shorter (45 minutes or less) albums? The less fluff, the better. I feel like a lot of bands have this preconception that if it's been a few years since their last record, they have to make a really huge album just to please the fans when it just makes it harder to sit through the album in those crucial first few listens.
  14. This might seem like a weird thing, but maybe you've lost the ability to hear higher frequencies as well as you used to. CDs do sound a little more sterile, but that's for reasons other than frequency.
  15. Same. Two pop artists I think are wonderful. Mostly as performers. Although Beyoncé's debut Dangerously In Love is one of my all time favourite albums. I'm not sure you fully understand the meaning of 'favourite' as you over use it and variations of it all the time. I don't get it. The meaning of favorite since it got reappropriated in modern language has basically come down to being "something I like more than the other things I like". I don't see anything incongruent with that meaning. What's the proper usage?
  16. Everyone's heard of Marilyn Manson but I feel like not enough people recognize his musical and empathetic talent, and how much he has matured as an artist. His new album is great, and Third Day of a Seven Day Binge is very dark and catchy.
