  1. Gosh I can't remember who all played in ther touring band on those tours. They have such a large revolving door of folks who tour with them. I know Fagan of course played piano but they had another guy too. Walter Becker played guitar. You are making me feel old I can't remember! I will go to the Dan website and see and report back ...
  2. I will say that the guy on the drums in that picture was awesome. His name is Keith Carlock. He nailed all the parts. He killed it on Aja.
  3. Yea I want to say the one in ATL was about 2 hours. The one a few years ago was probably 2 1/2. They jammed on some of the songs. Like Reelin' in the Years, they stretched it out a little it was the encore.
  4. The one back in the 90s ... gosh that was about 20 years ago... Let me try to remember, I won't get this exactly right. Maybe I should google that set list website what is it called? I saw them in 1995, I think it was, at Lakewood Ampitheater in Atlanta. I remember Walter Becker had just put out his solo album 11 Tracks of Whack and he did one song from it. I remember Fagan did some of his solo stuff too. As for the Dan songs, the ones I can remember off the top of my head in no particular order: Reelin' in the Years (slightly re-arranged - no guitar solo, horns instead) My Old School (this was the encore) Parker's Band Chain Lightning (re-arranged for horns) Kid Charlamagne FM Green Earrings Josie Deacon Blues Hey Nineteen Babylon Sisters That show was heavy on the later stuff I know. The one a few years ago was better as far as the setlist. And they stayed truer to the arrangements from the albums. That show was at the Tuscaloosa Ampitheater in Tuscaloosa AL - practically my backyard, and it was awesome to hear them sing "They call Alabama the Crimson Tide" in Tuscaloosa. This is the setlist I recall: Reelin' in the Years (guitar solo intact) Dirty Work (female backing singer took the lead) Bodhisattva Show Biz Kids (re-arranged slightly) Parker's Band Night by Night Black Friday Bad Sneakers FM Aja (they opened with this one) Deacon Blues Peg Josie Home at Last Hey Nineteen Time Out of Mind I know I am missing something. But anyway, it was fun. :-)
  5. I thought I remembered you mentioning a liking for them. Their albums do sound amazing, and yet, they were always dissatisfied with the quality. They were certainly perfectionists. I was able to see them in the 90s, and then again a couple of years ago. Countdown to Ecstasy is their 2nd album. It has Bodhisattva on it, which is a great song. And King of the World, which I love. I would highly suggest seeking out the infamous live version of Boddhisattva that was the b-side to Hey Nineteen ... the guy who introduced them was ... interesting! Then I have that album. It's in a different place from my other Dan albums. I am going to go get it out and put it with the rest of my Dan stuff. And I just put on Pretzel Logic - Rikki Don't Lose That Number! It's wonderful that you've seen them in concert. I really regret never going to see them back then. If you know of any good bootlegs (especially video), post about them. Rikki is great. For some reason they do not play that song live, along with Do It Again. Their two biggest songs! That is the only bummer I experienced in the two times I saw them. Sadly I have no bootlegs -- but I do have a blurry image I took the last time I saw them - I didn't get Walter Becker but I got Donald Fagen:
  6. Thanks :-)
  7. Doh! O well ... goes to show, give me a chance to start a thread and it's been done! Sorry!

  9. I never really got into the side projects, although I have Ty's solo albums, Jerry's two solo albums, and I have downloaded a few of Doug's songs here and there.
  10. So I am listening to my playlist on my phone and decide to hit the Dan this afternoon and after not listening for awhile I am reminded yet again what a great band they were. So any love out there for the Dan? And as to the obligatory best and worst lists, I think Katy Lied was their best album, followed closely by Can't Buy a Thrill and Aja. My least favorite album is Gaucho, from their classic period. The two newer albums - Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go - I am not really including as they are more footnotes, although I found a few songs on Two Against Nature to be enjoyable. If I did include them Everything Must Go would be dead last. 1. Katy Lied 2. Can't Buy a Thrill 3. Aja 4. Pretzel Logic 5. Countdown to Ecstasy 6. The Royal Scam 7. Gaucho 8. Two Against Nature 9. Everything Must Go
  11. King's X
  12. If you want to close a business establishment, that's probably one of the fastest ways to do it :) That's funny, but I think you mean Snakes and Arrows!
  13. Open Secrets got me through a rough patch last year. Amazing album. Especially if you have at times felt "broken inside". Brilliant song, Open Secrets is...thematically more adult than the science fiction and Kubla Khan-ing of ten years earlier. And that's not a criticism of the earlier work, at all- I'm just illustrating how different they had become. And I don't care what anyone says to the contrary about this- the technical proficiency required to play the songs on Hold Your Fire is equal to that of Hemispheres, or Permanent Waves, or anything else. You know I agree 100%. Always, when it comes to this album! And if you hunt down the original Lerryn! review, the rated it the full 5K's and said EXACTLY what you have just said, and more. It is a marvellous album. It is by far the best of the synths era albums, and in my opinion possibly the very best of all their albums. I say this all the time, but I really mean it. Those who dismiss it are mostly those who prefer to go with the crowd consensus, so they choose to ignore it. It was the last Rush album I bought, and what a treat it turned out to be! The album that has rewarded me the most with repeated plays. I'd like to see that review you referred to- I've never seen that. http://www.2112.net/...1003kerrang.htm FIRESTARTER! 'HOLD YOUR FIRE' ALBUM REVIEW BY STEFAN CHIRAZI, KERRANG! NO. 156, OCTOBER 3, 1987, TRANSCRIBED BY DAVE LYTHGOE Rush - 'Hold Your Fire' (KKKKK) (five stars/k's) Yes, the fabulous five for this album. Because once again, Rush have provided an album of class, quality and consistency. I've heard some sort of bulls**t that this album sounds like Simple Minds. Yeah I suppose it's got a modern sound, but that hardly qualifies it for Kerr Mk 2 does it? Of course it bloody doesn't! The only 'influence' I can detect a smidgeon of is The Police, other than that we're talking about a natural progression from 'Power Windows' into a land of majesty and modern strength. If you want strength, just cop an earful of opener 'Force Ten', its ecclesiastical intro giving way into that good old Geddy bass before the song engulfs the listener in a series of superb dynamics, melodies and atmospheres. Rush prove that power and brute sonic force doesn't need speed or volume, Rush create both by simply making their overall sound B-I-G. The one thing to notice is that Alex Lifeson's guitar seems these days to share level pegging with the keyboards/synthesisers that are increasingly becoming the Rush sound. 'Tiime Stand Still' is testimony to the fact that Rush could never lose their roots or their originality however modern they decide to be. Harking back to the days of 'Hemispheres' with large dashes of 'Power Windows' influence, the meandering mystical path the number takes is marvellous to experience. This is another major Rush strength that 'Hold Your Fire' illustrates, Rush's ability to advance and experiment without becoming pompous or indulgent. Of course this all depends on one's personal definition of indulgence, ie if something performed at less than drillhammer pace sounds boring to you then the point is lost, but I think even the most cynical would see their opinions blasted away by such numbers as 'Lock And Key'. They have even written a natural single in 'Mission', all keyboard harmonies and gentle guitar waves melting in with that essential Rush sound...Lee's Rickenbacker gems, Lifeson's neat licks and Peart's superb drumming. Knowing how rare it is to find an album with ten grade 'A' songs on it, I implore all lovers of good music to make an immediate purchase. You don't wait around when quality is on the shelves. And 'Hold Your Fire' really is one of the finest albums of the year. Interesting comparison of "Time Stand Still" to "Hemispheres". I don't really see it, but interesting nonetheless.
  14. Never knew they had a video for The Body Electric. Cool. And it´s one of their best too, imo. I'll have to check it out. MTV used to often show that video when Grace Under Pressure was new It's funny as a kid I watched MTV all the time, and I have no memory of seeing a Rush video at all. But damned if I didnt see Kajagoogoo about once an hour! Damn that song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMgA5VkZ1SIThis one? :P Gee thanks!! :D :fuckinputer: Ugh what a horrible song. And I actually like a lot of the New Wave stuff.
  15. Yes 1976 was a good one!
  16. That was some year for music. Yes it was - that is why I picked it, its hard to miss on that one.
  17. Yours Is No Disgrace - Yes Tarkus - ELP Aqualung - Jethro Tull Wild Horses - Rolling Stones Imagine - John Lennon Another Day - Paul McCartney The Story in Your Eyes - Moody Blues After Forever - Black Sabbath Til I Die - Beach Boys Stairway to Heaven - Zeppelin 1969 next?
  18. Between Sun and Moon = Alex channeling his inner Billy Gibbons. I think of ZZ Top when I listen to his guitar work on that for some reason. Great song. I would love to hear Neil's take on the lyrics as it seems to be one of the most misunderstood. It's been a while since I analyzed it, but I seem to recall that I thought it was a take on the creative unconscious or universal mind. Kind of similar with what the Police did with Synchronicity. I always thought that the subject was a little strange coming from Neil giving his stance on religion and such. Pye Dubois wrote the lyrics. http://www.cygnus-x1...ounterparts.php Says in the liner notes that Peart also helped. A collaboration. Anybody else got a take on the lyrics to Between Sun and Moon? Can't really make sense of the Why The Sun? line. How does that tie into creative unconscious? Maybe I'm off base and it's just a song about celestial wonder? Also, I wonder if "bonfire lights in the mirror of sky" from Between Sun And Moon is the same thing as "wilderness of mirrors" from Double Agent. Seems to me these two songs are discussing the same subject somewhat. I think I remember reading Neil say something to the effect that Pye was a little more abstract in his writing, and Neil brings order to Pye's disorder. I am guessing this was one of Pye's more impressionistic lyrical offerings, outside of "Force Ten". As to the wilderness of mirrors line, I think it was explained in the tour book for the CP Tour, I would have to dig my tourbook out and refresh my memory. And musically I think this was inspired by The Who, but I see the ZZ Top thing too.
  19. I really like Red Lenses. Always thought it was one of the better songs on GuP. Certainly better than Between the Wheels or Afterimage, which I think are the weakest songs on that one. Oh man, Between The Wheels features my favorite Lifeson solo of all time. Goosebumps on goosebumps. haha I certainly like Between the Wheels, but it gets plenty of love by fans and Rush set lists to be underrated...just sayin'. :D Great solo for sure. Oh yea, I know BtW is not underrated, just drawing a comparison between it and Red Lenses, which I feel is underrated. BtW is a "bathroom song" for me. And that is super rare at a Rush show! The only other song I can remember feeling that way about at a Rush show was "Faithless" which is just boring as hell.
  20. I agree with Distant Early Warning...waaay too loved to list IMO For me, I could've skipped over more liked songs such as the one tour played Presto (was that even a single?) and Territories...so now I will... 1. Cut to the Chase 2. Entre Nous 3. Good News First 4. Cinderella Man 5. Dog Years I love all 5 ...backlash be damned. :P Yes, the song Presto was a single. I remember hearing it on rock radio. I believe it was the third single released and faded pretty quickly. EDIT: Actually, I guess it was the second single and charted one position higher than The Pass. Huh, never would have guessed. https://en.wikipedia...(album)#Singles Now I'm mad they never bothered making a video for the title track. It would be impossible to be worse than the train wreck Superconductor. Hey I like Superconductor... I'm strictly going by the video. The song I like. Ah cool. :-)

  23. Anagram, Bravest Face and Middletown still have not grown on me even after 25 years of being a fan. Anagram and Bravest Face in particular I don't think I've heard in awhile. Just not clicking with me. Second Nature though, I have always loved. Good pick!
  24. My five would be: Cut to the Chase The Enemy Within Ceiling Unlimited Chain Lightning Carnies I think any song that starts with a "C" apparently ...
