  1. Using a great book called the Rush chronology, here's the dates of the writing and recording sessions for each album. Split into three posts: Debut Album: Recorded from April-November 15, 1973. "In The Mood", "Take A Friend", "Before And After", "Working Man", "Not Fade Away", and "You Can't Fight It" were recorded in April. In November "Finding My Way", "Need Some Love", and "Here Again" were recorded, and new mixes were made for "What You're Doing", "Before And After", and "Working Man". The album was completed on November 15. Fly By Night: The songs were made throughout 1974. Work before the album (In chronological order) "Best I Can": February-March 1974 "In The End": May 1974 "Anthem": The basic melody in July 1974, Neil's lyrics in August. "Rivendell": Started in August 1974, completed on September 25, 1974. "Making Memories": Started on November 10, 1974, finished on November 23, 1974. "Fly By Night": Started on November 11, 1974. "Beneath, Between, and Behind": Started on November 19, 1974. "By-Tor And The Snow Dog": Started on November 23, 1974, finished on December 17, 1974. The album was recorded from December 27, 1974 to January 15, 1975. "Beneath, Between, and Behind" and "Fly By Night" were finished during the recording sessions. "Rivendell" was the last song finished, on January 14, 1975. Caress of Steel: Recorded in July 1975, other info unknown. 2112: Title track worked on as early as November 1975, while the rest of the album was written and recorded in February 1976. "The Twilight Zone" was the last track finished. A Farewell to Kings: "Xanadu" was worked on as early as June 1976, originally inspired by Citizen Kane. The rest of the album was written and recorded in June 1977. Hemispheres: "La Villa Strangiato" was worked on in soundchecks as early as February 1978. "Hemispheres" started work in April-May 1978, while "Circumstances" and "The Trees" were written in June 1978. The album was recorded from June-August 1978.
  2. "You Really Got Me" isn't heavy in the slightest, and "Born To Be Wild" and "Summertime Blues" are just noisy psychedelic rock, if those are metal than so is Jimi Hendrix and Cream. I think the first "metal" song is "Helter Skelter", followed by "Dazed And Confused" and "21st Century Schizoid Man".
  3. My fav on the album is "The Enemy Within", with "Red Sector A" and "Between The Wheels" right behind. Controversially my least favorite is "Distant Early Warning" which I hate for the same reasons I hate "New World Man", as in, not really having any solid melody and just trying to imitate the Police. I'm fine with "Red Lenses", it's an interesting "mysterious" tune that reminds me a bit of "Mystic Rhythms" and in a good way.
  4. I hope there's some vault stuff. That was sorely missing from the 40th anniversary 2112, as there was just two outtakes from ATWAS and "The Twilight Zone" from the D.C 1977 bootleg, which was off-pitch. I'm disappointed they didn't do stuff like this for the 40th anniversaries of Rush, Fly By Night, and Caress of Steel. They had deluxe vinyl editions but no additional material, which is disappointing, a bit of extra live stuff (like the radio broadcasts, or maybe a mythical COS official show) would be nice.
  5. They're still number one for me (Though then again i'm only 15)
  6. None of those are true. Sheesh, this reads like a terrible Rolling Stone review from the '70s.
  7. ATWAS would be up there, but I think it MIGHT be overdubbed, the vocals sound a little too perfect, for example.
  8. Different Stages '78. Packed with '70s epics, Geddy at his peak, and NO overdubs.
  9. Sorry for the late response, but happy b-day! This is a very underrated album, it's 40 minutes of top-notch, balls-to-the wall rock and roll. Working Man, Before and After, Here Again, What You're Doing, Finding My Way, even Take A Friend, they're all great.
  10. Subdivisions is a masterwork, possibly a top 10 song by them. The Big Money, The Enemy Within, and Mystic Rhythms are behind.
  11. It really does suck that I never got the chance to see them live, but i'm glad they ended on a high note.
  12. BUMP! Updated my list: 1. BU2B 2. 2112 Grand Finale 3. Cygnus X-1 Part III 4. Working Man 5. Double Agent
  13. In terms of Geddy's voice, the 2112, ATWAS, and AFTK Tours. His '70s voice at it's absolute finest. In terms of performance the Signals/GUP era, the energy was outstanding.
  14. For each tour: SnA: Circumstances and A Passage To Bangkok (Two rare gems that i'm glad they unearthed) TMT: The Camera Eye (Same reasons) CA: Unsure, one of the new songs? R40: Jacob's Ladder and Losing It (Ultra-rare tracks that Geddy's new voice works best with, IMO)
  15. Ozzy's Boneyard isn't a metal station. They play Zep, they play AC/DC, they play Van Halen, they play Queen.
  16. Shake It Off is one of my least favorite (Non-rap) songs of the decade, for example, so I give it to Tai Shan.
  17. I saw Yes do the "Revealing Science of God" and "Ritual" sections when they played live last August, I loved them!
  18. Time to gush over Limbo! A very underrated instrumental from Test For Echo. The wordless vocals give me chills every time!
  19. I also hate country, cheesy sugary fluff pop, extreme metal, and show tunes. None of those have appealing melodies to me.
  20. Here's an awesome live performance of 2112!
  21. I say rap music is the worst. I heavily value melody in music and I haven't found a SINGLE rap song with a good melody. They're all just lame drum beats over speaking.
  22. 4 stars. Good but flawed. "Diadects and Narpets" especially isn't too great. Best is "In The Valley"/"The Fountain". Imo.
  23. Five stars, best song on the album. Under The Shadow's the best.
  24. Comedic videos have been a staple since the R30 Tour, such as "Real history of Rash" on the TM Tour. "Darn That Dragon" from the R30 tour's great too.
  25. I wouldn't call Rush a "cult" band. When I think of cult bands I think of under-the-radar groups like Frank Zappa, Ween, Neutral Milk Hotel, Phish, and The Grateful Dead. But Rush aren't in the top 10 most famous bands. Off the top of my head: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Rolling Stones, The Who, AC/DC, Beach Boys, U2, and Aerosmith are all more popular. Rush have had many hits but aren't as popular as those, you're more likely to be familiar with those bands.
