  1. Alex changed his gear around this time resulting in a thinner, sparklier tone.Gone were the Marshal amps and (for the most part)Gibson guitars in favour of Fender style guitars and I think Gallien Krueger amps. But the whole band had changed gear, electric drums,Wal basses, haircuts, etc
  2. One of the coolest puzzles were ones where there was no box art so you didn’t know what you were getting and so no reference. They could be marketed as Easter Eggs.
  3. I used to work in a games shop and we sold tins of paint jigsaw puzzles. In other words they made up to random puddles of paint with all the pieces in either red, green, blue, etc. There was no black or white though so Metallica ,Beatles or Spinal Tap fans are out of luck.

    Permanent Waves

I am afraid I just don’t play PeW that much.I have never really dug Spirit ,it’s ok,but it’s probably because I have heard it so much like Paranoid or Smoke on The Water.Freewill and Natural Science are sensational and I really like Jacobs Ladder now.Entre Nous is short and snappy like Circumstances and Different Strings is great but I always had a problem with the guitar solo tacked on the end seemingly for no apparent reason. And yes it is a fairly short album and it seems like there could be another song.I get the same feeling with another album There’s the Rub by Wishbone Ash.Although worlds apart musically it has six songs and just seems to be over in ten minutes.Still PeW is a great album but I tend to overlook it somewhat.
  5. I am afraid I am from the old school where you waited patiently for a year or two for a new album with new music.A Greatest Hits package was bought if it had rare b sides or unreleased tracks and maybe a cool cover.Back in 1978-81 when I worked in a record shop box sets were a rarity with the two major ones being The Beatles and Hendrix.I never bought them and to this day I have very few box sets because I like the stand alone albums.Even my Sector sets as great sounding as they are don’t get played much. Now since Rush are defunct we are not going to get any new music and the record companies are just going rehash everything. If there is going to be a PeW Anniversary (see my thread)and it offers something I want I will buy it but I am happy with my two copies of it.My only Rush memorabilia is my t shirts a couple of posters and a pack of playing cards.I would like to think that the band have a say in what gets let out.If Peter Grant was still around and managing Rush I think it would be a different story.
  6. One idea for the mega limited expensive overblown box set would be a Rush surfboard.I can’t surf but it would make a great addition alongside my Pink Floyd DSOM prism paperweight and LZ Presence object(fake)
  7. I haven’t bought any of these anniversaries yet but if they include that St Loius 1980 boot cleaned up I would scrape some coins together. Its been said here before but as good as some of the cover versions go (Dream Theater) I just don’t think they belong on an official release.Could you imagine the uproar from the Led Zep diehards If Mr Page started putting the likes of Dread Zeppelin (great pisstake) on the reissues. On the subject of the cover Hugh will probably splash oodles of colour over the grey wash and the ladies dress will be lowered for the politically correct crowd. However a Steven Wilson remix 5.1 would be wishful thinking.
  8. Has anyone heard from across the pond if anything is happening with PeW Anniversary release. Is there one ?Is there bonus tracks/concert?Dream Theater doing Natural Science? Will Hugh Syme ruin that wonderful cover.Just asking.
  9. The Blah,Blah,Blah, speech era was awkward.
  10. RTB for me.Although Presto has some killer tracks it also has some duds(Scars,Anagram) and the production is weaker .RTB is great and I have no trouble playing MP or Hem alongside it.RTB has a consistency to it.And yes I am waiting for the ‘consistently bad’ comment.
  11. Solo section of Freewill reminds of what Cream used to do except its over in a minute not half an hour.
  12. Between the Wheels is one of Alex’s best solos, gripping and emotional, like all his solos on the album.
  13. I've been thinking this about G/P for years. It is a cold album, it is a Cold War album. The last drum crash of Between the Wheels is very cold. And Alex's tone. throughout, is consistently cold, but not in an unpleasant way. This is one of the best Rush Threads all year. "GUP" will always be my second favorite Rush record. "Dark Wave" is a great term for such a moonless masterpiece. Yet the stars still shine brightly in the Rush Universe. The irony for me on "Between The Wheels" is for my ears, Alex's solo is one of the most beautiful and melodic guitar solos on the planet. When I play my drums to that song and Alex's solo starts I drift into an inspired zone that leaves me uplifted and and excited.
  14. I remember at the time of GUP I was listening to Rage in Eden by Ultravox and War by U2 a lot and most likely so were Rush. They had a darker, minor tone to them.Midge Ure ‘s arpeggios and lots of synths were similar and I thought The Edge’s solo on New Years Day was something Alex could have dreamed up.Unlike a lot of Rush fans they didn’t like this new sound.I thought it was great.Darkwave is a good term
  15. Beautiful guitar.Aside from not being able to afford it I would be to scared to play it.I have a very old Fender Strat L series that is bashed to buggery(think SRV or Rory Gallaghers guitars)and I am to scared to play that.It just sits in a corner in a case. The wife constantly nags me to sell it since I have ten other guitars and we could do with the money. The trouble is the guitar has been with me longer than we have been married which is grounds for divorce.
  16. Er,I am not much up to this modern day technology but could they do online streaming for other parts of the world.Otherwise we are up the stream,um creek, with all this.
  17. Errrmm...yep I meant the Bluray .Cant wait for it to come out on vhs.Or Beta
  18. Just saw the trailer and I am impressed after being very sceptical. However I live in an area where even the garbage man doesn’t come i will wait for a DVD release

    Instrumentals.

It took me a good while to get into Dream Theater.I used to believe what a journalist said about ELP and apply it to Dream Theater-“a tremendous waste of talent and electricity “But somehow the penny dropped and I love DT now.

On the long version of Fanfare it sounded like Emerson was murdering his keyboards(and no not with the daggers)

Thats exactly what I was getting at.I liked how Rush made light of La Villa as an ‘an exercise in self indulgence’but somehow kept it listener friendly.
