  1. I posted a while back and chose Cygnus, but even though Cygnus will always be my favorite, I think Xanadu is really the better song. ...but I'm not changing my vote, too much love for Xanadu already :P
  2. I went with The Garden, but this poll is missing a number of essentials, and Mystic Rhythms shouldn't really be there. Those essentials include, but are not limited to: Losing It, Discovery from 2112, the beginning of Natural Science, Halo Effect, Witch Hunt (maybe not lighter worthy, but certainly slow enough), Manhattan Project (to an extent), and so on and so forth. Heck, you could even say Closer To The Heart deserves to be here, or Time Stand Still.
  3. To be fair, any Rush fan knows in two seconds like any Rush song that just started. At least from Rush to p/g
  4. I thought for a moment, went to 2112, then to Xanadu, then back to 2112. While Xanadu is sheer brilliance from beginning to end, it's also a tad, JUST A TAD, repetitive at points, though it's effective. 2112 on the other hand opens with one of the best rock "instrumentals" ever recorded which flows seamlessly into some of the hardest, angriest material Rush ever played. Afterwards truly begins a wonder which I couldn't begin to successfully describe. So I won't. All in all, 2112 just has Xanadu beat as it never ceases to amaze, whereas Xanadu can eventually grow ever so slightly stale.
  5. My top 5 Rush albums: 1. AFTK 2. PeW 2.5. MP 2.75. Signals 3. 2112 4. CA 5. PoW
  6. Only listing the albums I've listened through. Rush: Working Man, Finding My Way, In The Mood 2112: 2112, Something For Nothing, A Passage To Bangkok A Farewell To Kings: Xanadu, Closer To The Heart, Cygnus X-1 Book I/A Farewell To Kings (Cygnus is still my favorite though) Hemispheres: The Trees, La Villa Strangiato, Cygnus X-1 Book II Permanent Waves: Natural Science, The Spirit Of Radio, Freewill Moving Pictures: YYZ, Red Barchetta, Tom Sawyer Signals: Subdivisions, The Analog Kid, Losing It Grace Under Pressure: Red Sector A, Distant Early Warning, The Body Electric Power Windows: Marathon, Territories, The Big Money Hold Your Fire: Force Ten, Lock And Key, Time Stand Still Clockwork Angels: Clockwork Angels, Headlong Flight, The Garden/Halo Effect
  7. Best synth albums: Power Windows, Signals, Moving Pictures, Grace Under Pressure, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Hold Your Fire (in that order) Best synth songs (in no particular order): YYZ (just such perfect timing is all I can say), Between The Wheels, Distant Early Warning, Red Sector A, Xanadu (probably, can't say I ever paid much attention to the synths, but I will next time from what's been said here), Subdivisions, Big Money, The Trees, Circumstances, the quiet midsection of Cyngus X-1 Book II, Tom Sawyer, Jacob's Ladder, The Camera Eye (may be super easy, but such a great way to compliment the song), Vital Signs, New World Man, The Body Electric, Territories, Tai Shan, Madrigal, Force Ten, Time Stand Still, Manhattan Project...okay, like EVERYTHING on Power Windows, Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Moving Pictures. Oh and I'm sure if I listened for the synth work on CA I'd find some other pretty great stuff too.
  8. Rush: Before And After Fly By Night: N/A Caress Of Steel: N/A 2112: 2112, the whole thing, as well as Geddy can sing it without hurting himself A Farewell To Kings: Anything off this makes me happy :) , of course if I had to choose, Cygnus or the title track if Geddy's willing, or Madrigal if it's too tough ;) Hemispheres: The Trees, easily, but Circumstances would be cool too. Permanent Waves: Jacob's Ladder Moving Pictures: Vital Signs Signals: Losing It Grace Under Pressure: Red Sector A Power Windows: Territories Hold Your Fire: Lock And Key Presto, 90s, and 00s: N/A Clockwork Angels: BU2B N/A=I haven't listened to it yet.
  9. Permanent Waves Halo Effect
  10. When single bass drum kits seem hopelessly incomplete When seeing other bands doesn't seem right because there are too many players handling too few instruments/parts When you're surprised to discover kimonos are meant for girls When best guitar solos lists not including any of Alex's dozens of mind-blowing guitar solos makes you angry
  11. YKYARFW You can name every Rush album just from seeing the font used for the word Rush
  12. A Farewell To Kings, don't even try testing me on my favorite. Moto Perpetuo
  13. "Oh yeah, I forgot there was the longer version of 2112. I was only remembering the radio edit..." No joke, this was said to me by a friend of mine, being another Rush fan, a few days ago...
  14. "Working Man," easily. That song rocks harder than about anything else. It gave the band their first big break and is just awesome!
  15. Another thing you shouldn't say: "Ooh! I love that girl who sings that one song! How's it go again...'Closer to the h--" *POW*
  16. Update again! 1. AFTK 2. PeW 2.5. MP 2.75. Signals 3. 2112 4. CA 5. PoW 6. Hemispheres 7. GuP 8. HYF 9. RUSH Actually, much of this might be subject to change pretty soon. I need to go through all of them again and reevaluate my feeling on a few of them, like Signals, PeW, GuP, and maybe Hemispheres and Rush
  17. This is tough. I have to say on the first few listens this won't end up being one of my absolute favorite albums (too much like PoW, but I heard PoW first and like it better), so this at least eliminates a few tracks for me that just don't stand out enough, but there is a significant number of stronger tracks, like "Force Ten," "Time Stand Still," "Lock And Key," "Tai Shan" (mainly for the music), "Open Secrets," "Mission," and "Prime Mover." Not to say the other tracks are bad, but they'll have to grow on me some more. That being said, for me it's between "Force Ten" and "Lock And Key." I really want to show the latter some more love in the poll, but when I think about it, "Force Ten" really is the better of the two though I may be subject to changing my mind.
  18. Update Time! 1. A Farewell To Kings (pure magic) 2. Permanent Waves (fresh and new every time) 2.5. Moving Pictures (one of rock's best albums, perfect blend of synth and guitar) 2.75. Signals (also fresh and new like PeW, but some songs don't quite stand up to those on higher albums) 3. 2112 (I can't bear to keep the title track out of the top three) 4. Clockwork Angels (incredible, truly mind blowing, especially when paired with the book. Truly latches on to the modern prog/metal/rock sound) 5. Power Windows (where the synths are every bit as powerful as guitars, yet both are noticeable) 6. Hemispheres (astonishing technical feats, as always, yet much seems to blend together here. A smidge too samey on first listen) 7. Grace Under Pressure (a few incredible songs, matched with a few more or less average rush songs, just a bit too slow and dark all around, but still great) 8. Rush (YOOOOW! (Insert rock and roll scream here, ad helium) rockin', but little match for the rest of Rush's catalogue)
  19. So I got this album maybe a month or so ago now, but neglected to post about it here until now. I was hesitant to get it at first after having just checked out GuP from the library, and still needing to digest it some more, but the offer was too good to refuse (vinyl, 5 bucks, and I actually had money). As soon as listened to it, I didn't get what any supposed general dislike of the album was all about that my dad had mentioned. I immediately saw it as better than GuP (and still do) as GuP was taking too long to get into (a number of great tracks, but a general sameness which happened to be a bit slow and dark to take to much of, PoW having a similar balance of guitar vs. Synth, but faster and less hopeless). That being said, I do quite like GuP, but PoW hit it out of the park for me (of course, it is my first Rush album on vinyl). Anyway, as for picking the best track on PoW (oh yeah, that's why I'm writing this). It's such a hard decision, because so many of the tracks are right up there (Territories, Marathon, Big Money, Manhattan Project, Middletown Dreams...most all of them really). If I had to pick one though, it's got to be Marathon. Talk about inspiring, and dat bassline. Marathon certainly deserves the title, but there are many close seconds.
  20. Oh dear, I'm going to have to rethink my fav list. I just got GuP, and I adore D.E.W. And R.S.A., but there's three others I really like, and three more that have yet to make much of a mark on me. Here's my preliminary update, subject to change at a moment's notice: 1. AFTK 2. PeW 2.5. MP/Signals 3. 2112 4. CA 5. Hemispheres 6. GuP It's a great album, but it's yet to prove to me it's deserving of a higher ranking. Great lyrics, but the music is quite "samey." I need more listens.
  21. Gah, I'm having trouble with this decision. I want to say Red Sector A, but Distant Early Warning has a better melody, and some of the other songs come really close as well. ...I guess it's Red Sector A, the combination of the lyrics and some of the darkest, most powerful synth use I've ever heard from Rush put it over the top.
  22. I have to say, I completely loved it. Of course, the only other live album I've had the pleasure of hearing is Time Machine, and my dad and I both agreed Geddy's voice just wasn't quite doing it for us in that one (I seem to recall Camera eye being pretty good in that area though), but this one was awesome for my dad and I none the less. I'm not the hugest fan of the non-CA parts of the setlist, but of course I'm still not past Signals in my collection, and Subdivisions was certainly an awesome opener. As for the CA portion though (CA being the only post signals studio album I've obtained), IT ROCKED! I was blown away more often than not as I saw Rush completely jamming out there modern day sound. And just like the studio album, the best performance on the DVD is easily Headlong Flight, extended drum solo and all. By the end of that song, I couldn't believe what they did with it, and I couldn't believe it had to be over! I would've fainted from sheer epicness right then and there if I were one to faint. The rest of the film was great too, especially when they got back to tracks I was already familiar with. A wonderful Christmas present.
