  1. "Falling Back to Earth" from The Mountain is really good. I though the roach song was clever, very King Crimson inspired (also similar flavor to the mid-section The Architect). May take a few more listens to the Mountain until I'm hooked, it's been a slow burner. There's a touch more pop-Prog than I like but there's still also a healthy mix of heavier stuff, just like on Affinity.
  2. Lucky bugger :P Listen to The Mountain album from start to finish :) . Or their restoration EP I'd be willing to give it a go sometime... :) https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=haken+the+mountain
  3. Fan, can't say I listen a lot but like you occasionally throw them on. There's a Steely Dan thread I think. Threads move down the list so quickly here it's probably on page 4 now, seeing that it's been maybe 2 weeks since someone posted in it. :P
  4. Wait until you guys hear 1985 and The Architect. [i recently reviewed Affinity for dprp.net ] Think Dream Theater, with mathematical melody. Red Giant's good too. Really, the entire album is great. I have zero prior material, and had only heard a couple songs over the years prior to the review. Honestly, checking out their older youtube stuff, it's not quite as alluring as their latest album. Affinity is just a notch better than anything I've heard online from them prior. I'm rather particular in my repeat plays, but this is *still* playing in the car and I submitted the review earlier in the week.
  5. Whether or not a band survives long enough to make 13 albums doesn't have anything to do with it. I'd rather a band make 4 classic albums than 3 classics and 10 meh. But it's hard to sell and tour these days if you don't have new material to promote. Otherwise you end up being those washed up rockers playing summer festivals and super small venues to the few diehards old enough to remember you. TA is DT's attempt at staying relevant.
  6. Probably because the band released an album that has divided the fanbase like no other in their career. I don't care for the album myself but I've moved on. There's too much good music from DT and other bands to dwell on one bad release. I just hope for the best with their next one which should be out in 2018. Gotcha. Love it or hate it either way no need get all fired up, jmo I'm definitely not "fired up". Tick on the other hand went from zero to screw you in one post.
  7. Sadly people get cemented in their position, once going public and saying they are for/against something rarely do they backtrack. It's takes a very humble person to admit they're wrong. Unfortunately for a lot of early TA fans, they rushed out with this new found thing and sung its praises. Now that they've been staring at it for a while, in better light, they're finding it aint nearly as pretty as they thought. Will any of them ever admit to this? Very few will. But that doesn't change whether or not this will go down as the laughing stock it is. Sadly, some people think they have a great enlightened knowledge that supersedes all. I love the album but to you I'm just an asshole for liking such a bad album. What a dick... We are openly discussing our views and thoughts, you come in here all pathetic thinking you know better. No I DON'T. I just don't keep spewing the same tired crap. You don't like it, move on to something else. You've inspired me to stay. But really in spite of your posts, not because of them.
  8. It happened to me with Clockwork Angels. Same for me, I liked it initially but the lyrics that I never really connected with really started to become a chore to tolerate on repeat listens. I haven't listened to CA in a long while now, mostly as a result of the lyrics [and Ged's deteriorating vocals].
  9. Boy, I hope they don't read this! They would have to retire. If you don't like it, no one should. But your opinion matters more? Why?

  11. If they didn't phone it in, and this was truly the best effort they have, then they should (and I mean this literally) just kill themselves. Or at least stop making and distributing "music". ;) Songs are a sum of their parts. If the lyrics are horrendous and the music great, it doesn't make the song great. It's as if people are listening to this album listening only to the music, because on the merit of the lyrics alone this ranks as one of the worse albums in prog rock history. I can't personally even think of a more poorly written album. Add to this all the borrowed pieces and nuances from past songs, and it's really a shit show. There's nothing new. There's nothing great. Even their concept ideas aren't original. Give it up.
  12. DT were a unique thing at that time. Those too young to remember fail to understand the impact they made in moving progressive and metal music forward. In those genres they had as much influence as Rush has in rock music. To hear them phone it in (especially the lyrics, but even the many borrowed licks from prior songs) with The Averageness saddens most of us old enough to recall that time.
  13. Looks like the band will continue on... https://www.facebook.com/Riversidepl/posts/1197638513581398:0
  14. but they gave us this.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LatorN4P9aA This is seriously one of the best (heavier pop) Rock songs of all time. Perry's vocals on most of the Journey stuff elevates it. He was easily one of the best lead singers for any mainstream band in the '70s and '80s.
  15. IMO these guys seem to put out an awesome album every other album, with the ones in between either being not great or just terrible. Awake: FII:  Scenes: 6DOIT: ToT: Octavarium: SC: BCSL: ADToE: DT12: The Astonishing: For the most part, I share your sentiments. The only exceptions being FII which I like to an extent and Black Clouds which I find patchy though less than the 80% turdfest of SC. The DT albums I enjoy, I really love; while the ones I don't are some of the most forgettable albums I've ever listened to. This extreme love and hate relationship I have with the band is probably why I don't hold them in higher regard compared to every band on my top 10 list of personal favorite bands. I think it's cute how after 332 pages members are still comparing best of lists and debating them like subjectivity has any merit.
  16. I wouldn't say I'm particularly an audiophile. I want a balanced sound. The sort that sounds like it's supposed to. I remember really enjoying my Steelseries Siberia before I broke it, which (to my ears) is more bass-heavy than other headphones, but not overwhelmingly. Most of the headphones I've tried are gaming headsets, fault of me being a young aspiring gamer since I could buy my own stuff. I don't know if it's helpful to state that I don't like pretty much any of the Logitech or Razer headsets. They sound off to me. I don't know what that corresponds to in the world of real headphones. You won't get audiophool quality for under ~$100 anyway, so it's a good thing you're not! :P Gaming headphones will always pale when compared to music industry targeted models. Since you don't have a particular need/preference, the HD280 would be fine.
  17. What headphones would you recommend for us home-recording folk? Let's assume money is an issue. :) I'm another ATH M50 fan, been using them as my primary headphones for a couple years now. Deep and rich sound, perfect for tracking and casual listening/mixing. My Sennheiser HD600 are flat and perfect for mixing when I can't use my monitors. The rest of my headphone adventures can be found here: http://homerecording.com/bbs/equipment-forums/gear-reviews-and-questions/hd600-v-focal-spirit-pro-v-dt770-v-blue-mo-fi-v-ath-m50-mixing-headphone-review-379095/ If I were to recommend a ~$100 USD pair of headphones, it would be the Sennheiser HD280. Nothing at the $100 mark comes close. And they don't require a dedicated headphone amp (neither do the ATH M50s).
  18. The industry engages in these loudness wars and nobody wins. It's getting to be a tired topic, only a few artists even seem to care.
  19. What sort of sound do you prefer? Bass heavy? Flat?
  20. Jinx. haha Exact opposite happened with me. I'm not into their flavor of prog, but I like their pop. I'm more a Yes/KC/ELP 70s era prog guy. I think it's just Gabriel, I don't like him for various reasons. A couple of his solo albums are good though.
  21. My Genesis attempt resulted in me liking the late '70-80s Collins era even more, despite its intent to get me liking the Gabriel stuff more.
  22. I might just make Pink Floyd a project marathon. Maybe start from the beginning, live with a single album for a week and then move forward. I want to do that with Genesis as well. I do this all the time with new bands, or bands I'm re-exploring. I really need more than a couple plays to digest what I'm hearing as well, so a week seems long enough to 'get' something (or not).
