  1. QUOTE (PariahDog @ Jun 9 2011, 11:35 PM) QUOTE (circumstantial tree @ Jun 8 2011, 02:57 PM)Also, Pink Floyd's "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" was also released that day. Two weeks later, Yes' "Big Generator" was released. and U2's "Joshua Tree". 1987 also saw the release of Marillion's "Clutching At Straws." HYF is a great album, but sounds very dated now. It's funny how the digital synths of PoW and HYF sound SO dated, while the analog synths (and even early digital synths on GUP) have a more timeless quality. Rush, please bring back some Moog or Oberheim on CA. Song-wise, there are some true classics on HYF (FT, TSS, OS, SN, PM, M, TTP), but also the first two Rush songs I was ever dissapointed in (TS and HW). I think it's interesting that most S&A haters seem to love HYF, probably because it has one of the only two songs (Prime Mover and Mystic Rhythms) where you might convince yourself that Neil was "getting religion" (though I wouldn't interpret the PM lyrics that way). But I think many also like the overall optimistic tone of HYF, even though it's EXTREMELY cheesey, whereas PoW is optimistic but not QUITE as cheesey. Clutching at straws is ace!!! So is HYF
  2. QUOTE (Invisible To Telescopic Eye @ Jun 8 2011, 10:30 AM) Loved it when it came out and used to listen to it all the time....years and years ago...but I have not listened to it in easily 20 years and still own it on cassette and vinyl, but not CD. I loved it so much i bought it on all 3 formats
  3. QUOTE (MCM @ Jun 8 2011, 02:26 AM) I love HYF, I don't understand the hate that it sometimes gets. It was the first Rush tour I saw. I think it's a clear and precise sounding album and I love every minute of it. I think it's some of Ged's best vocal work. Agree!!!!!
  4. QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ Jun 8 2011, 01:37 AM) I love it, except for the last 2 songs. They are weak and wreck the flow of the album. Turn The Page would have been an excellent closer IMO. Hey, totally agree. I loved it except the last 2 songs. Everything up until then is mind blowingly brilliant. Lerxts razor-thin solos, Neils superb drumming on Mission and Lock and Key. Geddys super-cool bass on every song. In addition to that it had an excellent overall sound IMO. HYF is still my favourite RUSH album, my mum bought it for me on my 14th birthday and i will never forget the first time i played it through my headphones. HYF really means something to me. I love that record. It turned me onto RUSH and ive never looked back.

In addition to that one, I'd love to hear "Alien Shore", another song from the record that hasn't been played live. Yes, yes, yes, Alien Shore is a great song. Cut to the chase, the fantastic Between Sun and Moon and Stick it out are some other good ones on CP IMO. Stick it out seems to divide opinions on whether it should be played live, i reckon it should be, after all we dont hear much pronounced feedback on Lerxts sound so much these days. And it rocks too! Cold Fire could do with a live outing as well. I'd replace Animate as a live song with all of the above any day of the week. And thats not to say i dont like Animate, just think all the above are better. Wow, after reading my own post i never knew i liked CP so much! Damn, i forgot Speed of Love as well. Great song IMO.

  7. QUOTE (A long awaited friend @ May 30 2011, 12:46 AM) Caravan. It's a mess. caravan is a bit of a mess, cant get the riff out of my head though. i hope they dont "overcomplicate" Clockwork Angels with more songs like this. Its still good to hear RUSH doing what is largely a "jam" song but wouldnt have thought its good enough to be on any RUSH album. all that said, ill skip the track when the album comes out.

I think The Spirit of the Radio (sic) was. But then Englandland has better taste than the USA perhaps fewer teeth leads to better taste........... Yeah, how often do you and your friends say "Hey, let's go out for some English food!"? hey we eat english all the time, fish and chips, yorkshire pudding roast beef and gravy. give it a try!

  11. QUOTE (maxelkat @ May 19 2011, 02:08 PM) Friends who know I like Foreigner and Porcpuine Tree have long been telling me that I would like Rush. Browsing in a shop the other day, I stumbled across a copy of 'Roll the Bones', and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did! I'm loving it! Looking at the extensive discography is a little daunting, so I'm here to ask advice: where do you think I should start (or rather, continue) in my exploration of Rush's work? It really doesnt matter as long as you get them all. i started with Hold your fire, then went right back to the first RUSH album. I dont think theres much point in following a band like RUSH without hearing everything. My advice is rewind to 1974 and PROGress from there! That way you can see the evolution of RUSH. Enjoy!

Ive enjoyed reading everyones opinions on this so thought id offer mine. Signals for me is a triumph although i can understand why it is seen as a lesser offering than MP. I do think that the bass & drums on Signals are amongst the best on any RUSH record. I have read reviews over the years about the lack of guitar, this is true, but when the guitar does make an appearance its done brilliantly on pretty much every part. Subdivisions, Analog Kid & Chemistry are some of my favourite RUSH tracks & i even like the much maligned (by the band) Countdown. At the end of the day we all have some songs/albums that we prefer over others. Thats because as we all know RUSH have never stood in one place for too long and always made music they find interesting, complex and challenging. The music they make seems to be primarily for themselves but it just happens that the fans love it pretty much each & every time. So whatever your preference from the RUSH catalogue, enjoy it and dont EVER stop enjoying it. After all we are RUSH fans arent we?
  14. QUOTE (Trouty @ May 17 2011, 11:43 AM) My first show this tour however a veteran of many Rush shows down the years. I was near the front on Geddy's side 3 rows up the side. I actually thought the show had the most glitches I can remember from a Rush show. I thought for the main the sound was poor and did not know if that was that I was too near the front or on Geddy's side as I'd never been on Geddy's side before. It just sounded too bassy which drowned out the vocals too much. I noticed Neil dropped sticks at least 3 times and once even played one handed for what seemed 2 or so seconds which to him is a lot of hits. I noticed the drum tech out a few times to shore things up. I can't for certain say but I'm sure the screen was buggered for too long a periods through out the show. Long gaps with nothing on them which is strange. I guess I can compare that on Saturday. part of the screen was damaged during the Camera Eye and early on in the camera eye Geddy appeared to have issues and was communicating with techs quite a lot. The pyros did not go off during Marathon - well the sound did but no fireworks, again not sure that is correct or not. Do not get me wrong it was a great evening and I loved it but like I said something was a bit off - or maybe over the years I've come to expect too much. i was there and agree about the sound. i thought the band with an exuberance i have never seen from them before. there lack of visual pyro was done on purpose as the same hapenned at Manchester and Birmingham. "A lucky shot in the dark" makes sense if you think about it, although i didnt consider it until the 3rd show!!
  15. QUOTE (MarkyWarky @ May 25 2011, 03:12 AM) @douglip. Given the location and what you describe (I've checked, and we were in block 13, not 14), I think it's pretty obvious that the small group in front of you was us, so lets correct the facts shall we: We stood up at the beginning of the second half, as did many many others below and off to either side of us. Not directly in front, as you say, but I'd say at least half of those in the banked seating were standing. That's what happens at rock concerts; people stand. It's nothing to do with seeing over the people in front, it's to do with getting into the music, and giving some feedback to the band. If it were just about being able to see, everyone in the stalls would sit too, as you see LESS when everyone stands there. Re threats of violence, what actually happened was that someone tapped my brother on the shoulder and asked, quite nicely, if he'd mind sitting down (no mention of anyone being disabled). He said, equally nicely, that he'd rather not as it's a rock concert, and carried on enjoying the show. A few seconds later someone grabbed him by his shoulders and his shirt, and pulled him backwards onto the seat backs. He turned and knocked the person's arms away, as anyone would. The only violence, and it was more than a threat, was from the person behind, not from us. I'm genuinely sorry if your friend couldn't see, but no one mentioned that he had trouble, and venues of this type provide facilities for people who have difficulties. I don't blame your friend for not taking up those facilities, but if he chooses not to he's got to expect that at a rock concert, people will stand. On the last two Rush tours, virtually everyone has stood at the LG, with a resulting much better atmosphere, whereas this time it was about 50%. If someone had explained that your friend was disabled, we'd have gladly swapped seats, though that would only have helped by chance, as in other blocks everyone was standing right to the front. If that had happened in our block, would everyone in front of you have been considered selfish? Yes, we were selfish in the sense that we didn't agree to the request to sit down, but in fact it was the request that we stop doing what people do at rock concerts that was most selfish. If we'd stood through a Shakespeare play, you'd have a very valid point, but I'll say it one last time: it was a rock concert - people stand at rock concerts. All of that said, I think it's pretty amazing that we've "met" on here, and it's a shame it couldn't be in friendlier circumstances, as we just wanted to enjoy the concert the way countless rock fans always have done. Mark let me know the next time you go to a concert, i will come and stand directly in front of you.
  16. QUOTE (latter-day-warrior @ May 25 2011, 03:45 AM) I agree with the comments (MarkyWarky) about the LG Arena and the sound - it's very poor. And, it's unfortnate that a 'dispute' occurred between individuals who were there to enjoy the same event but brought into conflict because of the design of the place. Standing at a concert of this type 'is' to be expected and they state this on the tickets .......a nice little disclaimer because they pack us in for maximum financial return/minimal outlay, all in their favour. You can stand at many US arena's and people who choose not to can still see over you ! I promised I'd not go back to LG Arena after the R30 tour, but hey - the band are worth it. "But" I'll be trying the O2 for the next tour .... if you thought the sound at LG was bad try Motorpoint at Sheffield. The LG was a delight compared to Sheff.
  17. QUOTE (Jeff_RushFan @ May 24 2011, 03:45 PM) Hi, I've been reading Rush forum for some years now and a Rush fan for around 30 yrs! This was my 3rd time of seeing the band and as stated in other posts here I also feel the first half sound quality wasn't so good, I also feel the song selection didn't flow quite so well either, however that's a personal opinion. Other than posting to say thanks to the guys for playing Manchester, I also want to say how good the yellow coats/security are as far as I am concerned. I am in a wheelchair so am restricted to where I can sit, unfortunately this means I am unable to go to the front and must always sit up in the gods Now I don't mind people enjoying themselves and having a or 5 lol, but what happens is people who have a seat part way down stairs or on the ground decide to stand around where the disabled are sitting (no problem so far ), then they decide to stand on the stairs blocking my already restricted view, or to start talking in front/behind me taking away my pleasure of the concert. Due to this myself/wife ask the security staff if they can ask these people to return to their seats, most people do so without any problems, but for some reason there were a number of people who decided to abuse the staff calling them "nazi's" and chanting "zieg heil". At one point there were 6 security staff due to the number of "idiots" who were playing up, this while the second half of the show was in full flow! Sorry if this seems a rant I just felt I should at least say something positive for the security team who, in my eyes, did a controlled and calm job under provocation. Anyway, hope the guys finish the new record soon and come back to Manchester so I can see them another time and watch Geddy slap that bass!!! Jeff Hi Jeff, i was at that show and thought it was awesome. That said its very disappointing that fellow RUSH fans didnt give you some respect. Never mind, Clockwork angels tour next year (or the year after knowing RUSH!) then you (and i) can hopefully enjoy them again. \,,/
  18. QUOTE (owlman @ May 20 2011, 05:51 AM) Good to hear you enjoyed it. Sheffield was my first rush gig for over 30 years, can't believe why I left it so long, they're so good live! What was Geddys sound like? On monday his bass was very muffled & boomy. i went to sheffield, manchester and birmingham. The sound in sheffield left a lot be desired. i doubt ill go there again despite it being close to home. manchester was excellent, sound much better. birmingham sound was somewhere between the two but i still enjoyed all 3 shows. the band were really into it on every show, thought i might not bother seeing them again due to ticket prices but once they started it was a different story. The setlist was a dream for me, only Colour of right, Emotion detector and Kid gloves could have improved it for me.
  19. @andyd Nice to hear a bold input about Neils drum solo. Personally i dont think a RUSH show would be the same without a drum solo. Having said that and i may get lambasted for saying this but i think his solos have lost their way in recent years. The prof is brilliant but the solos have become slightly disjointed. In my opinion he was at the peak of his powers on the Hold Your Fire tour. Thats just my opinion, i love Neils in-song drumming/lyrics/musicianship but the forum is a place for opinion and that was mine. In essence, i enjoy his solos but i enjoyed them more twenty odd years ago. A matter of taste i guess.
  20. NEC show was great, Manchester even better. I also went to Sheffield and whilst the band played with some gusto the arena sound was poor. I doubt ill go the Sheffield arena again. The updates to NEC facilities were good too. Great setlist on this tour and like many others i feel Marathon was the high point in each show. Its all a matter of taste but i was lucky as Marathon, Camera Eye, Limelight, Time Stand still and Subdivisions are some of my favourite tracks. Now, when/were does the Clockwork Angels tour start????
