What set Nirvana apart from other grunge bands at the time was that Cobain was a big Beatles fan and loved ELO among others. So he had the ability to write grunge / punk songs with a pop feel and used the loud / quiet approach very effectively. This combination appealed to a much wider audience.

I wish everyone would stop using the word Grunge...those seattle bands were punk/metal inspired ..who the hell came up with that grunge description?..If i was in a seattle club circa 1990 , and saw Nirvana, i would have called them a punk band, thats it

I know that Vedder is a fan of bands like Mission Of Burma, i believe PJ has covered them, and they were a big band on the post punk scene..the guy does have Punk credentials, he knows whats up, but PJ sounds a hell of a lot less punk than Nirvana.
