I'm not even a big fan of The Smiths, but "What Difference Does It Make?" is one of those songs that have stuck with me since I first heard it. But not the original album version from The Smiths, which I don't really like, instead the version from Hatful of Hollow, a collection of B-sides and John Peel show performances (and the only Smiths album I own). The John Peel version just has so much energy that the original doesn't.

Also, there are numerous Beatles' songs which I prefer in their mono mixes. Instead of just jamming everything into one channel in many cases the mono mix is distinctly different than the stereo mix.

"Taxman" from Revolver is amazing in mono. The stereo mix is just weird, with most of the band in the left channel and the vocals and a tambourine in the right. The mono version has so much more power, and the drums and bass are mixed higher I think, too.

Actually, I'd go as far as saying that I prefer the entire Revolver album in mono vs. stereo. "Got To Get You Into My Life" is anothe track that IMHO benefits so much from having everything in the same channel instead of lonely vocals floating off in one channel.

Cheap Trick's In Color album has 2 versions out: the "official" release, and the 1998 re-recorded version produced by Steve Albini. (According to the band, it was recorded again because they wanted to do it the way they originally intended.)

I have always adored the Albini version a thousand times more than the other.

I kind of like the fast version of We Will Rock You over the stomp and clap version most people know. They often played the fast version live, but it's hard to find the studio version.

Yeah, the songs sound better on HoH. The self titled debut by The Smiths has a weak production.

Also, I love the version of Van Halen's Jump from the music video just for Diamond Dave's "Ohhhhhhhhh!" before the last chorus. Classic DLR moment there. I especially dig the sax solo version of Say It Isn't So from the video Hall and Oates made.
