This thread is inspired by the Merle Travis "16 Ton" poll thread. We got to talking about not just Travis, but also Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emmanuel, and Adres Segovia also made an appearance. So let's take a look at the various playing techniques, and the styles used to make them come alive.

Let's start with Merle Travis and Cannonball Rag.

Here are Merle and his son, Thom Bresh, playing together. It's pretty amazing.

Next up, one of my favorite current guitarists, Paul Pigat. He's Canadian, so every here ought to be able to appreciate that. ;)

He's most well known for his rockabilly playing, but thumb picking is a huge part of playing that style, more than I ever realized until last year.

^^^That guitar is so new, it still has the Styrofoam wrapped around the tremolo arm.

Brian Setzer, anyone?? In this first video, he either plays with a pick, or he tucks the pick into his index finger and uses his thumb, middle, and ring fingers. I guess he likes the feel of hitting the bass strings with his thumb, or maybe it's just how he taught himself how to do it. Either way, you can't argue with the results.

Absolutely LOVE this song!

or Mark Knopfler. Yes, it is played to death on the radio, but it is still a great song and he is astounding.

What about Lyndsey Buckingham...entirely amazing...and a hybrid style all his own.

I'm sure I would get to him eventually. Of course you are more than welcome to post up some vids of him, and anyone else who you think has amazing finger style technique.

and

I don't think he's using a pick (I couldn't see it before or after the song - slight of hand  ) and I can see that he's if is using a pick, he's also strumming with his fingers, so hybrid I suppose...

That's a great video, SC. I really like how he describes using the thumb at four to the bar instead of one to the bar. He makes it look simple, but the great ones always do.

Superb! :ebert:

Glen Cambell wrote some timeless music...I'm still in awe of his ability, even with ALZ he somehow can still pull it off

He uses a pick but picks like no one else! And we get a chorus line of dancing pigs, too!
