Perhaps my favorite Steely Dan song

I think this was on a greatest hits album they did. Anyway, it came out in 1978.

Sadly though, it reminds me of a guy I knew who loved Steely Dan who was killed in a high speed auto accident right after this song came out.

Ironically, his Mom's name was Ruthie.

I try to remember his life.

pretty sure they played that song when I saw them in June.

Ruthie will give you the silver key

To open the red door

Lay down your Jackson and you will see

The sweetness you've been cryin' for

In the night you hide from the madman

You're longing to be

But it all comes out on the inside

Eventually

the song is from 1976 so I guess it was an outake from the royal scam.

Its crazy how powerful music is. In your case, such a great song invokes such a painful memory. sorry about your friend.

I love Steely Dan. The music just takes you places.

I would assume it was a song he was really into at the time. Music evokes memories and if he was into that song and his friend died at that time, it could surely remind him of his death.

OK, I agree with that. I was mistakenly looking at the lyrics of the song instead of the association of a song to a individual.

I can't say that's what he is thinking, its just my assumption?

I gotta think you are right as the lyrics are not about driving or dieing. At least not to me although SD has some of the most crazy and sometimes nonsensical lyrics.

The song to me is about drug addled craziness.........

HERE AT THE WESTERN WORLD (1976)

Down at the Lido they welcome you

With sausage and beer

Klaus and The Rooster have been there too

But lately he spends his time here

Hangin' with the Mayor and all his friends

And nobody cares

Where the sailor shuts out the sunrise

Blacked out on the stairs

CHORUS:

Knock twice, rap with your cane

Feels nice, you're out of the rain

We got your skinny girl

Here at the Western World

Ruthie will give you the silver key

To open the red door

Lay down your Jackson and you will see

The sweetness you've been cryin' for

In the night you hide from the madman

You're longing to be

But it all comes out on the inside

Eventually

CHORUS

In the night you hide from the madman

You're longing to be

But it all comes out on the inside

Eventually

CHORUS

You sir, are 100% correct. trink39.gif Mind you, I love the song but I specifically remember hearing it right before and after he was killed. It came out about a exactly week before the accident.

It was very sad. Another guy was in the accident and was in a coma for weeks. He never, ever fully recovered and his personality changed a lot after. My brother was invited to go out with them that night and by some miracle declined.

Anyway, thanks for your interest and input. trink39.gif
