I'm not a big fan of the genre, but aren't original American films like "Saw" and "Hostel" and the Rob Zombie thing creating a new "type" of horror film - one heavily on the gore and queasiness factors?

I'd disagree that there aren't any original American horror films being released, although I wouldn't care to watch them.

I don't know if I'd include 'Saw' in the category, but yes-they are part of a new horror genre they're calling "violence porn". I don't care for it myself.

I'm a big fan of "what you don't see" can often be scarier. I know, at least at one time, that John Carpenter and Debra Hill felt this way when making Halloween.

According to the interviews they gave on "The Fog" DVD, they had to give in a little to gore in order to make a profit since horror fans were wanting to see more of that. After the initial filming of "The Fog", all agreed that the movie needed some scarier scenes. So Carpenter gathered the actors together to add some scenes that had more "body contact" between the ghosts and the victims as well as some other scenes.

They talked about the movie "Scanners" which had just come out and used it as an example of where the genre was headed.

I mostly feel the same way, however it's not always the case. "Blair Witch Project" showed us absolutely nothing, and I felt it was a snoozefest; one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Give us small tastes, incrementally throughout the movie, and you'll hold our suspense.

Has anyone seen 'Severance'?

Saw it last nite on sattelite and its pretty funny. Not everyone's cuppa tea tho i'm sure, its pretty gory. I love Horror films, i'm more into pyschological horror, i find those films where you dont see any gore are the most frightening.

Blair Witch was the biggest pile of poo i've seen! It was so hyped up! rage.gif

Not having internet access at the time, I was lucky enough to avoid the hype on Blair Witch and, coming to it with a totally open mind and very few expectations, found it a quite enjoyable way to pass a couple of hours - hype can really kill a film stone dead hence the fact I generally avoid reveiws until I've actually seen the thing.

Believe it or not, though, I think the DVD that freaked me out most of all was when I got hold of Ghostwatch. I missed the original broadcast back in 1992 and got the DVD when it was, finally, released some years later.

Even though I knew the whole thing was a fake, it still freaked me out watching it. It just goes to show that shadows and sound on a small budget can work wonders if you're imagination's working with it (The Haunting is another good example).

The new trend of 'Gorneography'/'Torture-Porn'/'violence-porn' or whatever you want to call it, in my eyes at least, negates the need for you to use your imagination as the images are so explicit and in your face.

Remember, you're own imagination can be far more frightening that the best SFX and make-up in the business.

I didn't have Net access then, either. But I'm attuned to the pulse of popular culture, and knew it was getting good reviews through the underground.

I didn't have high expectations. And it still was a pile of poo. yes.gif

I think the fact is that the UK genre press (the only I read) doesn't tend to hype to quite the same level as anywhere else and the only real buzz about Blair Witch was that it was filmed cheaply and didn't take the obvious route that horror in general does.

Personally, I enjoyed it because of the complete absence of splatter thrown everywhere and the fact that it played upon people's paranoia.

I'm not trying to say that its great art or one of the scariest/greatest films of all time but I'd rather watch Blair Witch than any number of Hostels/Nightmare on Elm Streets/Rob Zombie splatter fest/Friday 13ths (delete where applicable).

I thought the last few minutes of Blair Witch Project were cool. That last shot was good, but too bad the movie was boring for the most part. I think a young kid who believes it's real would get a lot more enjoyment out of it though...at least my cousin did.
