An ipod would be nice... And when someone asks me "what music I listen to" my answer is "My favorite band is Rush, I like symphonic death metal, classic rock, indie synth rock, Johnny Cash, and Franz Ferdinand." and people look at me funny and walk away... same here...except they go..."Whats rush?" OH MAN... And then I have to explain and people get bored. Hey, they asked... That's why I don't bother with the clueless people LOL.

floydfanatic111
David Gilmour of Pink Floyd hates today's music scene with a passion. Even as far back as 1992 he said 1% of stuff coming out is nice but doesn't hunt as much as he used to for new bands so he sticks with old Bob Dylan, Eagles, Leonard Cohen and Neil Young records. Roger Waters stated that MTV has allowed music's self-expression to be treated like soap powder and alot is soft porn. He said after hearing a Radiohead record "where's my Neil young and John Lennon". Ain't it the truth. Because of Madonna getting famous she spawned unholy acts like Witchney Sneers(name for Britney I have), P*sstina Aquafina(whom I call Christina) and Ciarra Mist turned music into one softcore porn film and I don't find either one of those jezebels attractive. In fact, Witchney is a poor facsimile of my best friend back in Massachusetts named Danielle. She is not a rock fan(she prefers hip hop and rap) but knows I love Rush and Pink Floyd as I would flap about both bands like no tomorrow at college. One time in college, I was wearing my TFE tour T-shirt and she was like who are Rush and I said "The greatest band EVER to come from Canada and anyone who says Rush sucks should keep quiet". floydfanatic111
I listen to Pink Floyd, Rush, Queen, Journey(Steve Perry era), Styx(Dennis DeYoung era), Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, The Clash, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, The Beatles, some classical, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Miles Davis, Genesis, Zeppelin so I am somewhat diverse. floydfanatic111
QUOTE (Necromancer @ Nov 23 2005, 02:56 PM) I agree with everything about the industry and what "popular music" has unfortunately become. But to say there's no good music out there today is way off base. I honestly can't listen to the same stuff over and over. The remark that Stairway still gets played on the radio is something that irks me to no end. Not only does the industry suck, but radio doesn't help by constantly playing these "time honored classics". Yeah... zep doesn't have any new stuff... but RUSH does. When does your rock stations play One Little Victory or hell for that matter... ANYTHING after Moving Pictures? There's two stations around here worth any time and one plays "classic rock" and I usually won't listen to it since i've grown with that old crap and other than RUSH, couldn't care less about hearing one more Stairway or Freebird. There's a lot of modern stuff out there that's brilliant. TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE come to mind immediately for me. Talk about musicians learning their crafts and having CHOPS. Danny Carey, no matter what band this board is devoted to, may be the greatest drummer alive. Justin and Adam are no slouches at their respective instruments either and MAYNARD... probably the best male vocalist of all time IMHO. His other band APC, is just as accomplished on their instruments and the songwriting of both bands is phenomenal. I think there's a lot of stuff out there that will knock your socks off if you're not convinced that STAIRWAY is the end all of good music. And as far as the local bar scene... HELL YEAH. My area alone has produced some major bands. The Alex Lifeson produced LIFER... that i'm amazed not many of you have heard, and BREAKING BENJAMIN who are on the track to stardom now. All good stuff. More of it out there, but i mentioning it all would be too long-winded EVEN FOR ME. Just check out some of the bands that are mentioned in here. I did with Nightwish and now have a new band i'm really into. Lock those OLLLLDDDD tired Zep albums away and give something else a shot. You'll be glad you did. I hear Subdivisions on the radio and have heard Ghost of a Chance, Presto, Show Don't Tell, The Big Money, Secret Touch, Summertime Blues and such in the Northeast in Mass and Rhode ISland as Rush have a big stronghold in Massachusetts. Sheep. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/palominodweezil/noangry.gif Roger Waters hit the hammer right on the nail. He saw the industry change in the 30-years since he first penned Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar. Rap is a joke. Penny Cent, I mean 50 Cent, is a loser. Kanye West is a HYPOCRITE. He claims to like white people yet has publically BASHED white people. He whined when Gretchen Wilson won a Best New Artist award and cried RACE CARD! Then did it again when Maroon 5 won. Let's not forget his infamous tantrum on the Hurricane Katrina benefit. Rap is what disco was in the 1970s, getting old and overplayed. Enough bling and jive and bring back rock. If Billy Joel was out today, he would not have made it big.

Maynard is pure genuis. I hear many people ragging on APC, but IMO it is totally without merrit. Bullshit comments like Tool Lite, WTF???!!!! Both Tool and APC are tied for my number 1 bands. Followed very closely by Rush. There is hasn't been a writer of lyrics like maynard since I don't know when, since maybe Neil, and before Neil, it was Bob Dylan. I'm not saying this is fact, it's just my personal preference. Taste is a matter of opinion, not one of being right or wrong. There a few modern bands that kicks major ass. Tool (they aren't really new but still right awesome music) APC System Of A Down Disturbed Audio Slave (these guys are amazingly talented. Chris Cornell is incredible) Thornley Seven Dust Black Label Society (Zakk Wylde is phenomenal) All the bands I have just mentioned have an abundance of talent and write really great music. Unfortunately the great bands are hugely out number by the other 98% of the music industry's shitty bands. Such as, Good Charlotte, Limp Dickzit, Linkin Pork, POD, Sum41, etc... Another great place to find unsigned bands that are really good is a place called Audiostreet.net. This site is almost exactly like what mp3.com was before it was bought and changed. jgt46
The change in what is being played on the radio now is due to the pursuit of money not talent. Mainstream radio is owned by these big media companies that may play 10% of the music out ther past and present. Actually very few good new bands ever make it to recording an album and being heard. I mainly like the older bands Who, Marillion, Queensryche,Dio and others. I also love the guitar virtuosos who never get airplay. Satriani and Vai are incredible. Some of the new bands I like tool. Audioslave(Have always like Chris Cornell's voice sine the Soundgarden days) Nickelback sounds like the old bands and Shinedown has some good stuff. So I never watch the award shows or hardly listen to the radio as the industry has no interest in talent as much as they do in money.

rushgoober
i dunno, people always say in defense of modern music that you can't find it on the radio and you have to dig. i'm just too tired of it to break out the shovel when there was such an enormous abundance of great music in the 60's and 70's that i'm still discovering. people have tried endlessly to get me into new music (you've just GOT to hear this one, this group/album/song is really something special!), but every time and i mean EVERY time, the best i can say is that it's listenable and decent, but not something i would ever listen to again. part of me hears people go on and on about tool or nightwish or some other modern group and there's a VERY small and very tired part of me that goes, oh, maybe i should check them out, but i just know deep in my heart that they won't do it for me, and it's come to the point that someone has to very intensely force something new on me for me to listen to it because the batting average is .000 so far. who knows, i might like it, but every time people have tried with their favorite new band, i just can't get into it and why keep trying over and over and over when i always end up unmoved? admittedly i am deeply prejudiced against new music, but when i hear something new and don't like it, it's not because i refuse to like it, but because i genuinely don't like it. i like to give the example of 5-6 years ago when i was listening to this great radio program on public radio where the DJ was playing extremely NON-mainstream music of a genre i liked. i would really enjoy it - the stuff was original, interesting and light years away from commercial music. i came real close to buying a bunch of cd's until i realized that while i was enjoying it to an extent, especially as it was SO much better than what you hear on the radio or MTV, it still just didn't quite make the mark of music i would listen to at home - close, but... there have been some sub-genres that have come along in the 80's and 90's i've really gotten into and did go after - shoegze, trip-hop, ambient, and i really do like them still even if i rarely listen to it anymore, save ambient sometimes. usually anything i've heard from the last 25 years is just a shadow of what was being put out in such abundance in the 60's and 70's, especially from about 1965-1975 or so. this to me was the golden age when startling musical talent and innovation soared - a true musical rennaisance that hasn't been seen since. it's just gone. i don't want to think this way, but i do. to me music today is pretty much completely dead. i started a thread awhile back asking who the beatles, rolling stones, grateful dead, pink floyd, simon and garfunkel, csny, joni mitchell, moody blues, yes, led zeppelin and rush of today are and i got answers like U2 and NIN, Radiohead and the like. Sorry, but that stuff, while often somewhat above the crowd, is light years from the great bands of yesteryear. people complain that the beatles and led zeppelin are still played over and over and over. when their modern day counterparts come along, then i'll understand people shying away from continually replaying pink floyd and the stones, but until then, you go back to the best, and nothing i've heard in the past 25 years comes close, not by a very, very long shot. sorry if i've offended anyone, that's not my intention, i just am not seeing the good music at all anywhere these days and i got so burned out looking for it. Do0d, just check out the lists of "GREAT new bands" that those people who are defending new music provide. It really doesn't help their argument at all. I'm not saying that there's no good new music at all, but compared to clasic music it's not even close. I feel for the younger generation because I feel they are getting "Jipped" as far as their generations music. But if they like it then that's all that really matters I suppose. Moonraker
I no longer think its at all worth my time to try to explain to people who have already made up thier mind of what they like and dont like before they try it out. You dont like the bands I like? Thats just fine, one less body at the show between me and the stage. But if you are going to make a point that you dont like new music, know you have already made that point on numerous occassions, it gets old. Indica
Not sure if that was directed at me. But I never said I didn't like new music. I just think it doesn't compare to clasic music that was a lot more creative for the most part. I do like some newer bands but again, compared to music 20-30 years ago there is no comparing. I do feel for the younger generations that are subjected to a lot of crap, but people seem to like it so that's all that matters. I'm not sure why people get so offended, they just need to face the reality of things is all. The rock scene isn't near what it used to be and I doubt it will ever peak out again like it did before. What can ya do? Also, who says I don't try listening to the crap that people claim is so awesome? I do and I still wonder why people think it's so great. Look at the bright side, this generation has better video games!!! You have to think positive!!! EDIT: Opps, sorry, now I find out that the post wasn't directed at me. Sorry Moon. For the record, I love a lot of the bands that you claim are your favorites. To name one "Smashing Pumpkins" are one of my all time favorites. I love their music and wished they were still together.
