  1. Surprised that you were able to get pictures...some of the people working there were pretty nasty if you tried to get a pic of something when I was there several years back (and wearing a Rush T-shirt before they were inducted or even being considered for induction) I DID sneak a few pics of Floyd's stuff.... I had my wife act as a look out!
  2. Hah, you sound like me... I had a box of beat up cassettes that I just got rid of that were all my albums recorded off of vinyl! I actually think this was one of the first Rush albums that I actually got ON the day it was released....although PW may have been, but this one was a definite! edit: (not that it matters) Nope...just remembered that a friend told me about PW a few days after it was released...just reminded myself when I saw something his sister just posted on FB, and it sparked a memory! :codger:
  3. EXACTLY!! Another drummer friend of mine calls those "lazy fills" he said those are the ones he uses at the end of the night when his arms are getting tired...
  4. Yikes.....I'm freaking OLD! I was a senior in high school and the first minute of YYZ was rolling around in my brain all day... IIRC...I think I was playing the rhythm on the drums before concert band practice that morning, (or a morning close to the date it was released) and thoroughly pissing off my band director who was a bit conservative as far as odd time signatures!
  5. That's my criticism of him as well...he's not QUITE as bad with some of his other projects, but the DT stuff was WAY predictable after a while....
  6. Not sure how many Kansas fans are here, but a friend of mine linked this on Facebook, and I was blown away by these people! Haven't checked their other stuff out, but the Kansas stuff is off the charts!
  7. Wow!!! Thank you Rod for the info. David Prater should have been fired. Why the heck did Mike for that triggered shit? "Images" is still one of the greatest albums on the planet. I may be crazy but I'm not stupid. Could you imagine if "Images" had a natural sounding snare? UGH! Yeah, I remember reading some articles way way back when Mike was annoyed at his drum sound on that... I always wished that they would have put out a remix of that album with a real drum sound! (on their official bootleg series releases) The fact that they used that damn snare sound on this new album just makes some good songs sound cruddy! Hoping when I see them, that the snare sound is "normal"....

    Caress of Steel

Always has been, always WILL be one of my favorite albums! it's actually the first studio album of theirs I've ever owned! Granted...I Think I'm Going Bald is a red headed step child sort of tune, but the rest is just amazing! Sonically, I think it's off the charts....The mix is pristine!
  9. I think the "separation" was just a greedy thing from the rest of the band's point of view...but that said...Portnoy was spreading himself a bit TOO thin! I remember when it all happened, and they sort of alienated him, and he was forced to walk away..then all the internet press of their search for a new drummer... talk about lame drama! The guy wanted like six months off ferkrissake! Anyway....just heard from a friend of mine that we have tickets to see them at the Tower Theater towards the end of April...so there's a first!
  10. Ack! Spell check strikes again! Thanks for pointing that one out -- though I kinda like "What You're Doug" :) I thought maybe the person that transcribed it was named Doug, and is used to typing it.... ;-)
  11. Why didn't it matter with The Who? Their music wasn't cut and dry...squared off...and perfect...it had a sloppy quality to it that made them The Who! If you go see them now, they're more like a tribute act than anything else...some of the old recordings of things I've heard were so off the charts unruly, that you got into them more than the bands that played "like the record".
  12. I wouldn't mind a whole album like this... I'll see a Rush cover band if I'm reasonably certain I'll hear something after Signals or Grace Under Pressure. Yeah, I like how they did their own version of it as opposed to a bunch of guys trying to BE Rush... I guess half the problem is that I've heard recordings of Rush tribute acts, and I hate the fact that they are trying to sound exactly LIKE the band...(and I hate people struggling to sound like Geddy...hell GEDDY is stuggling to sound like Geddy these days!) I also got tired of the Floyd tributes, too. Hell back in the day, I used to have musician friends that were all in different bands, and we'd get together on off weekends occasionally, and just jam at things...we got into a Rush mode once and thought we should attempt being a tribute act on the side...until we got into a Yes mode...then a UK mode (that was tough as a drummer) and other things... I have a great CD set of different bands playing old Floyd tunes, but NOT trying to replicate it to the point that you have to listen closely to see if it IS Floyd playing! They take the song, and make it in their own style, which is cool! (album is called A Fair Forgery of Pink Floyd)
  13. From my seat, as a drummer for a pretty long time...ok almost all of my life... I think he's probably one of the first rock drummers to take things to a different level... I'm not going to say whether he was good or bad, he was the RIGHT drummer for The Who, and he did what was needed for the songs. When you listen back to some of their stuff, and hear what he played, and how he played it, you knew that he was the right guy for them, no questions..... How he would have played for a different band....who knows? But he took that old "four on the floor" attitude, and went up a few notches. I think he opened the door for a lot of guys (Peart included) to not be afraid to experiment, and take things to another level. "Technically" now... I would say that most people that look at drumming as an "art" would look at his style and say he was sloppy, unruly, and just not the best technician there was sitting behind a drum kit....but it didn't matter with The Who.
  14. Been a fan forever...not sure if I'd go....but if they're close, I'd consider it.
  15. Just to add....I HATE cover bands that try to replicate as close to the original as possible...about the only one I ever really enjoyed was The Musical Box (Genesis) doing The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway! I never had the privilege to ever see that live...these guys did it AMAZING-LY! (because Genesis would never consider ever bringing THAT one back...Peter Gabriel be damned!) I'm TIRED of Pink Floyd cover bands...I REFUSE to go see a Rush cover band..so when I see stuff like this, I can appreciate it!
  16. Yeah, no kidding, that guitar solo was cool!
  17. What??????? You met Billy Cobham????? You lucky bum!!!!!! "STRATUS!" "RED BARON!" "BIRDS OF FIRE!!" "INNER MOUNTING FLAME" OF LOVE!!!! Billy blows my mind!!! Incredible. I could type drummers and drums all day. It's sad I could never find a real band but back when I was young I actually did the mature and right thing. I had two beautiful baby girls with a young woman I really did love. I chose to run my dad's business instead of find rock and roll fame. I have no regrets. In today's world my woman and I are done but my two incredible awesome amazing lovely daughters remain. I can't confirm that God truly does exist but still after all of the negativity I know that I am truly blesses. Shit, where is this this post even going? I need to lean to install a filter in my brain, but then again that wouldn't be any fun. Listening to some Johnny Winter. Amazing stuff! Yeah...he did a clinic in my area...what was funny was a few (old) friends of mine from my drum and bugle corps days were there also, and they KNEW him..so I was impressed with that! I'll have to put my autographed pic of him (The Modern Drummer cover) up some day.... Great guy! played like CRAZY! I'm an old Mahavishnu fan, so....
  18. Weckl's great..love the stuff he did with Chick Corea's Elektrik (and Akoustic) bands! Watching one of his instructional videos years back when he was demonstrating his brush work STILL blows me away! Amazing drummer! I think I've only met two great drummers...(the late) Roberto Petaccia (who was with Maynard Ferguson) and Billy Cobham. Both great guys to talk to, they give you all kinds of tips!
  19. Awesome! And you're right. That would fit right on Grand Wazoo or Waka/Jawaka It's just amazing how that would have fit! Kind of like putting two of my favorite bands together!
  20. Can't find a YouTube kind of link...but do a search on Facebook for the US Army Band "Swamp Romp" playing Tom Sawyer! Great stuff! Sounds like Zappa's band from the Grand Wazoo-Waka/Jawaka era!
  21. Ok...got through it while driving, and except for the odd spot, I'm not liking it... Too long, trying too hard to make a big epic piece, the songs are all spotty, and interlude-y, and stuff starts to sound alike after a while...and that GOD AWFUL FREAKING SNARE DRUM SOUND!!! :fuckinputer: It made me want to drive into the side of a bridge at 100mph!!! LaBrie's got a nice voice, and I like some of the touches he puts on some of the different parts...Rudess's piano parts were nice, but I don't like his keyboard sounds...hard to distinguish where HE is vs. the orchestra, and some of the other stuff..sorry I like "sawtooth waves"....Petrucci's solo's and acoustic stuff here and there were nice. Myung was pretty non existent from his usual self...the drumming itself was interesting, Magnini's a decent drummer...but the snare sound really got into my craw, and detracted from the rest of the drum sound...I probably won't be listening to this one, too much....Guess I just like OLD DT....The past few albums haven't made me drool like they did in the past.
  22. Was just thinking....if they do this all LIVE...the sound MAY be more palatable!
