Easy-peasy. Start here:

and select the "I want to enable IMAP" option. All the instructions will appear and you can choose your various devices and get details on them, too
thanks. i saw that before i posted it didn't help though.
i did get this fixed however. like most of my tech solutions it was solved by me steam-rolling my hands over the keyboard over and over again until a solution worked itself. it came from configuring the imap path prefix and port.
