  1. You guys are funny. I am laughing at much of this discussion of who's better than who yada yada. The fact that KISS finally being indicted makes the RRHOF only a little less of a joke than it already has been. Rock and Roll is from the streets and should not be a f***ing institution. It's funny because later this morning the Baseball HOF will make their announcement as to this years inductees with much ado about the PED era and all. Rock and Roll is not at all like that. It is an artistic endeavor created by musicians who, by and large, play by instinct with minimal training. The best bands have the least training. It is ridiculous to stick bands into a so called institution of legitimacy. Rock and Roll is not about legitimacy. It's about sex, drugs and having a good time as loudly as possible. It's about getting the cops called and scattering. It's about packing your gear up after a gig and hoping some chicks are still around. It's about going to see your favorite band play with a few thousand people smoking weed and rushing the barrier. It's not about tuxedos and night gowns and little statues. It's about being sweaty on some meager little stage dreaming about playing the Coliseum to screaming maniacs. It's about what your parents wouldn't approve of. It's about telling the establishment to f*** off. It's guttural over technical. Which is why the best bands have little training. The best Rock and Roll is instinctual. And if we truly want to add baseball like status to the RRHOF then I'm sorry but bands like ELP, Cheap Trick, Jethro Tull have no business being there. It's not a Hall of Very Good. KISS is an elite band. They changed live shows forever. Yes deserves to be in as much as Genesis and maybe some hip hop artists. In retrospect and with perspective Nirvana absolutely deserves to be in. They changed the landscape of rock/popular music. Their production is tremendous. Did I like them when they were around? Not initially but the songwriting is excellent and caught me just before Cobain decided he'd had enough of being a rock star. I feel the same about Billy Joe's stuff. But it is still arbitrary, random and ridiculous all the same. Rock is not about playing perfectly. It's about the opposite of that. Listen to Jimmy Page. There's no perfection. It's sloppy as hell, but it rocks.
  2. I saw them in the 80s with my dad who is all about 50s & 60s rock & roll and R&B and that era in general. The Everlys and Buddy Holly had tremendous influence on the Beatles. RIP
  3. Moved to Music of the Spheres because this is non Rush music. Making Modern a Music is for gear and technique discussion. Thanks!
  4. This thread was moved because it belongs in Music of the Spheres (non Rush music) rather than Making Modern Music which is for gear and technique discussion. Yes, there is original music posted there but that is more for critique/feedback and example rather than promotion. Promotion is allowed for long time members of high standing. 33 posts doesn't quite get you there. :) That is all...
  5. Moving to Music Of The Spheres as this is non Rush Music and does not have to do with gear etc. Thanks!
  6. Hey guys. I think these are better suited to Music of the Spheres. Making Modern Music is for gear and theory/technique discussion. I've been lagging in moderation duties where this concerned. I don't want to discourage posting but would like to see it in its proper place. Thanks!
  7. Guitar solos and vocals get cleaned up. I have read that much of ESL is rerecorded. At least it's not like KISS Alive II which is sound checks with added audience noise.

  12. This was part of a press pack I had, probably still do somewhere.

  14. I was just reading about Stones tickets in my local "paper" and have read they are charging upwards of $1500-$2500 for good seats (face value). KISS has been charging $1500 for the front rows for a while now. The problem isn't the bands it's idiots who were willing to overpay scalpers for the past 2 decades. The bands are merely claiming monies that others have been capitalizing on for decades. My first big show was KISS in '79 which was general admission @ $8.50. I remember thinking that $34 for Rush was getting expensive in the 90's. The Eagles were the first serious gougers when they returned in '94. They were the first tickets I remember being over $100. McCartney in 1990 were around $35 for medium distance in a large stadium of 35k seater.
  15. Billie Jean Thriller Jenny Jenny (867-5309) Down Under Just a Gigolo Jump Oh Mickey Abacab Turn It On Again In The Air Tonight One Step Beyond Our House (Keep feeling) Fascination Don't You Want Me Shock the Monkey Running Up That Hill Fire and Ice (Pat Benatar) Love Is a Battlefield Private Eyes Family Man Cuts Like a Knife Fantasy (Aldo Nova) Lunatic Fringe These are all songs that had heavy play on MTV and seemed to play once or twice an hour in some cases.
  16. Yes Tim is the author of the Yes biography. He is also a school teacher. Great keyboard player, which is his specialty. Faithscience is his second album. We met when his Yes band "Parallels" played with my Rush band Trilogy and we became friends. He asked me to play bass on the Faithscience album so I am on most of the record (one song has a guy playing stand up). The majority of the record is more "adventurous" than Rome, musically speaking. :)
  17. http://youtu.be/pwNSkHxRDfY Here's a song from my buddy Tim's album that came out last year. I'm playing bass. Check out his album "Fatchscience" available on iTunes.
  18. This makes me feel old. I remember when that album came out and I still have my LP.
  19. John liked to play with words and he wanted to use both meanings of the word please. Nice with the Crosby reference. There is a movie that's been on one of the pay channels called "Nowhere Boy" which is about John's teen years with Kristen Scott Thomas as Aunt Mimi. I was skeptical when I started watching it but I had a couple of "come to Jesus" moments as this is the only film I've seen with the depiction of Paul and George's "auditions" with John. Paul played 20 Flight Rock at the garden party and George plays Raunchy on a bus. Good stuff.
  20. ELO was great. For me their peak was Out of the Blue but still put out some good material after that. Once they started to fall apart Lynne got into producing other bands and that became his focus. He makes good sounding records period. And people need to get of the classification train. Who cares what something is labeled? If it's good or not is all the classification that I need. I see the term "prog" and I want to puke.
  21. What is Hip? by Tower of Power (or most TOP) Penny Lane (Beatles) Good Morning, Good Morning (Beatles) Make Me Smile (Chicago, and most well known Chicago tracks)
  22. Going to see Michael Nesmith Wed March 27, which is next week. Never seen him and I have 3rd row seats. Never saw the Monkees but have met Micky and Peter. This should be interesting.
