  1. You can obviously vote against great songs that you've heard too much...but you also can't, I'm sorry! I've always loved all the songs on this album but was happy to see the covers go early because i didn't think they added much to my enjoyment when I listen to this, even though I like them too. Every other song is a killer in my mind that it's difficult to choose. I wouldn't have eliminated Jame's Crying nor Little Dreamer before this lot, necessarily but it's a tough call. Guitar playing on On Fire is On Fire but the vocal part just doesn't do as much for me whereas the guitar playing on all tracks is on fire for the most part!

  3. Another band I've barely heard...apart from Wayward son like most people. Embarrassing I guess! Interesting to see the list and what's worth avoiding. Was listening to Flying Colors recently (with Steve Morse) and comments were that it sounded a bit like Kansas. Well I thought Steve M only played on one or 1 Kansas albums (didn't he?) but are the others in the jazz-rock area? Was listening to some Tubes (White Punks era) recently too which are fun. I get the feeling when they let rip musically they might be a similarly ballpark to Kansas? Or maybe Kansas-lite? Without going off and listening for myself, what do you good people here on the forum advise/think?
  4. Haven't seen the documentary but I get the feeling that Portnoy and the other guys are just different mentalities 'energy and interests'-wise. Very tenuous theory and a sweeping statement but he seems like he loves getting stuck into all these projects and having a lot on his plate. The other guys all seem a little bit more introspective maybe needed for the intricate music they play. Not that MP's drumming isn't intricate. You'd say that most drummers would be a bit more extrovert but Mr Peart kind of showed that's not the case. But in some youtube interviews he basically said he'd be out drinking/socialising with other bands (e.g. his mates in Anthrax to name one band...) and when DT got together one or 2 of them would be on their phones whilst at a meal rather than chatting. Putting 2 and 2 together - different personalities. Probably saying the obvious. Good luck to them all I say! DT keep going and MP gives us quite a few quality projects (Flying Colors, Winery Dogs, Sons of Apollo....the list goes on). Don't know about the others but pretty sure he's still mates with John Petrucci as they've done some stuff together since.
  5. To my mind putting Innuendo aside, is there much to choose between ADATR, NOTW, The Game and Jazz? They all have a similar amount of good and meh tunes. I don't buy The Game having a weak side but that's by the by. At least Jazz has Dead on Time AND Don't stop me now that lift it's side 2 up to the stratosphere! I guess maybe the Queen 2 to ANATO run are going to share the top 3 spot? Or maybe ADATR is up there. I don't buy it - I find the album a bit weak if you have anything about you, you should vote accordingly!!! :codger: And to be honest, it's been a while since I heard the debut so not sure where that is in the grand scheme of things....
  6. I'm the one is the one to go - the geetar part is great but the sone part is a bit weak imo. On Fire is on fire and also feeling the love for Feel you love tonight. Can only vote to save one though :-(

  12. Opeth - oldie (pseudo?) death metal stylings :haz: or Camel-esque prog modern day noodlings. All good. Plus Mikael Åkerfeldt's dry wit is good too (re: concert banter). Actually haven't heard Beneath the Buried and me so I'll check 'em out. But fookin' luv Opeth so I doubt BTMAM would get my vote on this poll.
  13. Sorry but this time you're not cool because I love this too! One of my faves from this album. Sorry but your preference is not exclusive enough!
  14. I think Fair Warning is great! I looked into the artist and painting a while ago, William Kurulec`s The Maze. He had a pretty tough life and the painting was about his upbringing and mental difficulties. A pretty good way to be immortalised  I do like it but I guess it creeps me out a bit which is understandable seeing as he was visualising the things he was.
  15. How many of these polls ever favour the latter part of a band's catalogue? It's usually the early or 1st half of the discography which might be something to the average age of the people who frequent these forums! Youth of today:- Albums, LPs/cassettes, CDs, heck even DVDs? What are you talking about (old) (wo)man!?!? If it's not the top play on SpottyYouToobCurrentOnlineyPlayerThingy then it aint worth listening too! (Apologies to all the members 30 and under on this forum from someone a bit older.....)
  16. You might know the song that EP posted that link to. It's been in some movies and tv shows. Thanks - I'll check it out.
  17. Thought I revive this old thread seeing as it caught my eye.... Actually like the sleek VH symbol on VH2. It's one of the more iconic band symbols IMO, like Opeth, another favourite. Only had the cassette version (and showing my age) so never saw the inner LP pictures. Thanks to goose for that! I don't think VH really did great cover pictures on their albums to be honest. The DLR ones had the better covers. All up to Diver Down are ok. I'd go with VH2 and Diver Down being the best even though they are minimalistic (?). WACF and Fair Warning are ok too although bands just posing around aren't usually that great to my mind. Unless it's Vixen or the Iron Maidens...or Heart in their youth (ok fine, I lose sexist brownie points :() Most VH cover songs aren't too bad. The 1st Kinks one is the go-to one and Ray Davies liked it. Even the novelty ones on Diver Down are fun too. The one that always bored me a bit was Pretty Woman. Much preferred Dancing in the Streets and Where have all the good times gone where Eddie added a bit of something extra to them.
  18. The broken foot is real, btw. It happened doing the jump depicted in the performance photos. I'm not sure if it's the actual shot captured though. I always heard that it was. Makes for a better story, regardless. This band was rare magic. A perfect six album run. So that was the inspiration for Someone get me a doctor!
  19. Another band I haven't heard of and/or heard. These polls are proving to be an education.
