  1. QUOTE (GeddyRulz @ Aug 14 2010, 02:32 AM) I grew up with Baker and a little bit of the Davison stuff. I agree with those who say Baker is THE quintessential Doctor... but it's neat how they don't stick to one "type" when they're re-casting the role as a different regeneration. Davison was very different than Baker, and subsequent Doctors are very different from earlier ones. Companions? How about Leela, with her skimpy and primitive leather outfits? Yes, Louise Jameson was incredibly sexy. As was Katy Manning as jo Grant, Freema Agyeman as Martha and Lalla Ward as Romana (2) - especially when she wore the schoolgirl uniform With regard to Tom Baker, I read his autobiography last year (well worth it). Apparently, when he met children and they were too shy to ask for his autograph, he would ask them for theirs first and swap the two. Apparently, while he was married to Lalla Ward, she was looking for something in their house and found a drawer filled with little slips of paper with children's signatures on them. Apparently, Baker kept every single one of them. The guy is more than a great actor - he's an institution.
  2. As he did with every genre he turned his hand to, Hitch show us how it SHOULD be done. A great film from one of the greatest directors of all time.

  5. Actually, much as I love SF, I'm not that much of a Dr Who fan. I'll watch it if its on but won't go out of my way to do so. I think part of the problem comes with the attitude of Who fans. A lot of the time, I've seen acting along the lines of "we're fans of the longest running SF series so we WILL have your unreserved respect and adoration" before getting huffy when you mention the wobbly sets and RADA acting skills of the older episodes. Similarly, they tend to look down their noses at you if you don't immediately prostrate yourself when the name Russel T Davies is mention. (I'm not say this all Who fans but I've certainly encountered a lot of like this). however, I will say there is one thing makes Dr Who worth watching: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4095/4882089474_c2dbe826e7.jpg karen-gillan-police-uniform by Slaine2112, on Flickr

  9. Don't know if anyone's done this before. The idea is that you go to Babelfish, type in a Rush lyric and translate it from English to Spanish to French to Dutch and back to English and see what come out. I've just done it with the opening lines to In the End and come up with: I can see, what means you, he as soon as I me expensive Just interested to see what the rest of you can uncover How about this for Jacob's Ladder? The clouds are prepared for the battle. in l' dark and silence brroding. Stormclouds contusionados and hoscos, half of the daylight obscurecida. Lower parts and accident in early tones twilight. Thunderheads are rumbling to a distant insinuation.
  10. QUOTE (Digital Man @ Aug 10 2010, 02:46 PM) I chose silent mode, but leave before answering it. I have kids at home when I/We go out sometimes. If Sunny & I turn off our phones for two hours with the kids at home what do they do if they need us? Sometimes it's just not possible to be completely disconnected for a few hours. Its pretty much the same for me in addition to having a father who is elderly and very unwell. However, i wouldn't dream of using my phone just for the sake of it. Its a smiliar situation at work. There's one woman who, during her tea and lunch breaks, seems to have her mobile surgically grafted to her ear - and she's in her 50s not a teenager. Wonderfully convenient as mobile phones are, I sometimes think we're better off without them

  13. Actually, I was always rooting for the Kingons against the boy scouts of the galaxy. Then again, I loved it when ET died and was very disapointed when he came back to life
  14. I think, when it comes down to it, its just a matter of personal preference. At the moment, I own a Jazz but, having had one on extended loan a few years ago, I would take a Rick anytime - but that's just my own preference. i know a few bassists who don't like Ricks same as I know a few who don't like Jazz's. A friend of mine hates playing anything other his Precision. Most of it boils down to what you feel most comfortable with and, at the moment, I would say Ged feels most comfortable with the Jazz. Other considerations may come into it but, that is generally the bootom line. As for the weight issues, I think that is a reference to his double-necks
  15. Actually I'm going to diagree and say that I actually liked Insurrection. OK, it did have some clunky moments (but hwat ST film doesn't) but it was the ideal antithesis to First contact. To me, FC was the darkest ST film of all and, if they had carried on in that vein, it would have been too much darkness. Instead, they made it a bit lighter in tone (much as they did with Search for Spock/The Voyage Home). While I will agree about the joystick being a little silly, it did have plenty to recommend it. The Sonaa made great antagonists and the performances of the real veteran non-regulars (Anthony Zerbst and F Murray Abraham) raised it above the 'extended episode' syndrome. Plus, I love Donna Murphy in this. The Star Trek films have always been patchy. I agree with some of the writers of SFX magazine when they renamed The Motion Picture 'The Motionless Picture'. While the special effects were magnificent, the story was, basically, a retread of the episode 'The Changeling' mixed in with elements of an unfilmed episode entitled 'In Thy Image' (supposedly the intended pilot for the aborted Phase 2 TV series). While this wasn't a bad thing, as such, the implementation of the script was dull and, for long periods, nothing actually happened (although I have heard this was down to studio interference - they said as the FX were costing so much they should be on screen more). As such, it made for a boring film with flashes of greatness. TWoK fully deserves its reputation. It took everything that made the original series enjoyable but cut out the over earnest preachiness and turned everthing up a notch. In addition, Ricardo Montalban made Khan a great screen villain. TSFS - I've always looked at this as Star Trek going Spielberg. A decent story that's, ultimately, let down when it begins to wallow in sentimentality. However, it does have a darkness at its core that added a little bitterness to the sacharine. TVH - hilarious. Nothing is taken seriously (despite the seriousness of the central idea) meaning its great fun and not too preachy. TFF - there was a film called this/ i must have blotted it from my memory. Actually, the only thing I liked about this was Cynthia Gow playing the Romulan ambassador TUD - after FC, the darkest Star Trek ever got. Politics, conspiracy, action and Kim Cattrell ( despite the dodgy hair cut) make this a good film in its own right. Plus, with Christopher Plummer as Kang, another great villain. Generations - a fine hand over of the baton. Did very well to fuse the different styles of both crews plus the last (please) we'll see of Wilma Shatner. FC - not only one of the best ST films but a great SF actioner in its own right. Insurrection - I've already discussed this. I liked it. Nemesis - a wasted opportunity. With the concept of Picard's clone, maybe they could have made this an intruiging segment but fell short. Ron Pearlman was good tpugh.
  16. Its weird with me and Star Trek. i grew up with TOS and loved it at the time. Now, when I watch it, I just cringe. Then came TNG and the same thing happened - loved it at the time and now I find it cringeworthy despite having Patrick Stewart - one of the greatest actors of all time. DS9, never really got into. Voyager was hit and miss. Enterprise I hated. now we have JJ Abrams at the helm and I love it once more. The casting is, I think, great (particularly Zac Quinto and Karl Urban while Simon Pegg was surprisingly good and Zoe Saldana is the sexiest person ever in a Starfleet uniform - can we start lobbying for a Mirror Universe story? ) and the story was engaging without, as Jack said, the 'preachiness' that has dogged it over the years.
  17. Watching my daughter Mary open her presents on her 8th Birthday
  18. Agree with you there - its one I would love to hear done live. Even if they dropped the intro and went straight into the main body of the song I'm sure it would be awesome
  19. One of the ones I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned is Before and After. I just love that slow build until alex kicks in with a great riff

  21. QUOTE (danielmclark @ Jul 12 2010, 06:56 PM) QUOTE (Docmilsap @ Jul 12 2010, 01:55 PM) Can I ask what a scalper is? don't think we have this in the UK? A scalper is someone who buys tickets solely for the purpose of selling them right before the show (traditionally with a ridiculous up-charge attached). They're mostly illegal in the U.S. The way I understand it, the closest thing we have in the UK are the touts although it seems like, in the US, its become a big business concern
  22. Well, if you read what it says in the Power Windows section, you'll see that it had nothing to do with the band - it was purely a record company decision and, on the whole, they try to run roughshod over anyone they can.
