QUOTE (Mustard Death @ Jan 18 2006, 08:46 PM) Does anyone else think When Dream And Day Unite is the best album? >_> Images and Words IMO is the best but WDADU is very close. Ytse Jam is my fave DT instrumental. I'll take Dominici over LaBrie anyday. I also think that Kevin Moore was incredible and that the DT sound changed after his departure. Kevin Moore was reported invited to sit in as a guest at the next DT show in NYC for the 20th anniversary gig ( which will be made into a DVD) and he passed.

I should clarify that only the "cygnus" portion of the show could be released on ytsejam records, which is the label which releases live and obscure DT and DT related material. I would love to get a copy of the whole show, and if I do ,I will certainly let you know.

QUOTE (PuppetKing2112 @ Dec 9 2005, 06:53 PM)I'm with Kazz and Moon on this one. I'm not at all denying that DT are technically proficient musicians, I just think they are extremely boring and their songs go on way too long with needless soloing and such. I have listened to teir entire discography many times, and I cannot gather anything that resembles emotion or soul out of their music. Some highly educated musicians using their music as a forum to show off their technical skills instead of making music that says something. Portnoy annoys me to no end, comparing himself to Neil Peart in every interview. And James LeBrie seems to have no voice of his own. Listen to the Change of Seasons live album. They do Bohemian Rhapsody and he sounds EXACTLY like Freddie Mercury. They do a Zeppelin medley and he sounds EXACTLY like Robert Plant. They do Genesis/Journey/whatever and he sounds EXACTLY like Phil Collins, Steve perry, etc. And they play these songs exactly like the originals. Sure, it's impressive that they can recreate those, but what makes a cover great is when they make it somehow their own, and Dream Theater fails to do that, instead recreating what has already been done exactly. As for their originals, it all strikes me as prog-metal-by-numbers with 10 minute solos that never go anywhere and using everything as an excuse to show off even more. As Kazz said, when Rush fans start loving a different terrible band, we will start bashing them instead of DT. But for now, this is what we have. Dude, do you hate these guys so much you have to copy and paste your own BS. Hows about a little fresh insight into how much these guys suck. As you said and can be found on this site back in July: Jul 8 2005, 11:33 PM Report Post Quote Post Prime Mover * Group: Members * Posts: 978 Member No.: 64 Joined: 26-August 04 Location: Portland, OR I've said this a million times, but this is turning into another DT bashing thread, so I'll have another go...to me, DT seems like they want to BE Rush...especially Portnoy. And they WOULD be a good fourth-rate tribute band, if the only albums Rush had ever made were 2112 and Hemispheres...DT basically focuses on the 20-minute-epic/odd-time-time signature aspect of prog rock, but none of the innovations, or the creativity. The genre is called "PROGRESSIVE" rock MEANING evolution or forward movement, and DT stiffly and expertly recreates things that other people have already done. Kazz is right....DT is really a band of Yngwie Malmsteens, just soloing all the time for the sake of showing off. LeBrie...on their Change of Seasons live album, he really proves my point of him having no voice of his own. They do a Zeppelin medley, and he sounds EXACTLY like Robert Plant. They do Bohemian Rhapsody, and he sounds EXACTLY like Freddie Mercury. They do Journey, Genesis, etc. and he sounds EXACTLY like Steve Perry/Phil Collins/whoever. HE HAS NO VOICE OF HIS OWN. HIS voice? Generic, insipid operatic-metal voice...worse than Ronnie James Dio, if that's possible.

In my experience, the vast majority of avid and venomous DT bashers are relative newbies to Rush. Not sure why, but there seems to be a correlation there. Are there any folks out there that have seen Rush in concert in excess of 10 times and think DT sucks? How about 5 times? Just want to test my theory.

My guess is the state of music is the same as it always has been. You know, the more that things change........ Its probably a sign of middle to old age when you stop liking modern music or take the outlook that todays music scene is weak in comparison to those of past years. I think its human nature to bond with and appreciate the most, the music you were exposed to at a certain point in your life the most, like your teens or early 20's. I also think its important to be continually checking out new music. I am 39 and think todays music is quite exciting particulary from a instrumental progressive rock standpoint. If nothing else, saying that modern music is inferior to yesterdays ensures that you will not see many concerts. To think that the music of yesteryear is better makes about as much sense to me as saying the athletes back then were better. Its human nature to take it to the next level and I look forward to what the future has to bring.

Devin is incredible for both his vocals and killer guitar work. I first heard of him when he did the vocals for Vai- Sex and Religion. Then his vocals on Natural Science on the working man tribute disc were the best on that disc. Rumour has it that the Devin Townsend Band will open for Opeth on their next tour. Anyways those interested can check out full lenght songs in the discography section of his website here
