  4. QUOTE (Kudzu @ Aug 30 2006, 06:10 PM) QUOTE (tyranny @ Aug 25 2006, 09:00 PM) "Abacab" used to be one of my favorite albums, but now the only Genesis I can bring myself to listen to is "Three Sides Live"... That's a great album, as live releases go. I prefer "Seconds Out" myself. Both are good though.
  5. I feel lucky because since moving to Asheville in the past 2.5 years, I have seen at the Orange Peel, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Ozric Tentacles, & Yngwie ( 3 of my all time favorites and Yngwie). In October Buckethead plays here. For a city of only 70,000 I gotta say we do get some stellar guitar shows.
  6. QUOTE (treeduck @ Aug 31 2006, 03:54 PM) QUOTE (tangdog @ Aug 30 2006, 11:11 PM) Got to see Eric Johnson this evening at the Orange Peel here in Asheville. This was the 4th time I have seen EJ dating back to 1990. As usual nothing short of amazing IMO. Well rounded setlist with all 4 of his studio discs well represented. He also played 4 new songs( Boston, Brillant Rim?, Morning Sun, and ?), which I thought was odd knowing how long between new discs he is. He did an unknown to me, killer little country/western picking number ( think roy clark with attitude) right after a ferociously ripping rendition of Hendrix's Angel. So nothing from Alien Love Child - Live and beyond or Souvenir? He does a great version of Paperback Writer on Souvenir... Glad you enjoyed the gig mate, I've been a fan for 20 years but never seen him live as he never tours over here, not even backing up Satriani... hes going to south america with g3, maybe he will do the next european leg of g3. I saw a G3 with Petrucci/Satch/Vai a while back. 10. I got kicked out of gym for wearing a bad company shirt with a reefer leaf on it back in 1978 or so. Not a huge fan but do like what I know of them.....
  11. damn, that was sweet! my faves shown tonight were "under a glass moon" and "sacrificed sons" Not a fan of orchestras but that seemed to work. Portnoy is the shit!!!!!!!
  12. Its on now. Notice the copy of Permanent Waves in the foreground. Nice.
  13. QUOTE (GeddyRulz @ Aug 23 2006, 02:51 PM) Yngwie is over-rated; I could be the "world's fastest guitarist" too, if all I played were scales and arpeggios. And Angus Young? What has he done that's so good? Yngwie may be over-rated. Not a fan but I do respect him. It is pretty impressive to see him play that stuff live up close. In particular some of his acoustic stuff was excellent. I was actually suprised how well he interacted with ( relatively small ) crowd after always reading about what an asshole he was. I have never seen anyone come close to the number of picks thrown to the crowd that he did. He was winging them all over the place, pretty much at the end of every solo.
  14. QUOTE (Roddy @ Aug 23 2006, 01:26 PM) QUOTE (tangdog @ Aug 23 2006, 12:21 PM) QUOTE (Roddy @ Aug 23 2006, 10:30 AM) Alex is amazing, no doubt about it. One of the all time greats. During the 80s, my number one was Eddie VH, the man's a freak. These days, if I HAD to name a favourite, it'd have to be Zakk Wylde. The man fairly RIPS, his playing and tone shreds your skin off. No More Tears is one of my all time favourite albums. I write for a local music mag here in Melbourne. Just yesterday I interviewed Zakk himself...amazing honour, and the man's a NUTCASE! And so very very funny.... Are you familar with his work on last two Derek Sherinian solo discs? I've got Black Utopia, which I love, but haven't listened to for a while. Might just whack it on, since you mentioned it! There's some SERIOUS talent going on on that record, if I remember correctly: Zakk, Yngwie, Billy Sheehan..... What's the other one like? Black Utopia also had Al Diemeola! Mythology is also great. In additon to Zakk, he has Allan Holdworth, Steve Stevens and Steve Lukather. The new one just came out and the tracks at Dereks home page sound killer. Will pick it up with my next amazon order. Blood Of the Snake features: Slash, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Simon Phillips, Tony Franklin, Brad Gillis, Billy Idol and Brian Tichy.
  15. As a stand alone Guitarist it got to be Steve Vai with Eric Johnson as close second. John Petrucci is up there too as well is the forementioned Ed Wynne of Ozric Tentacles. People, I realize are superior guitarists and I need to buy some material of include Buckethead and the almighty Mike Keneally. Keneally can play note for note with Vai, not only on the guitar but on the piano as well.

  18. QUOTE (PuppetKing2112 @ Aug 21 2006, 10:46 PM) QUOTE (tangdog @ Aug 21 2006, 06:18 PM) talking heads remain in light- holy shit! a college favorite as was the Tom tom club. Do you have "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads?" That's a live retrospective that goes through Remain in Light. 2 discs, almost 3 hours of stuff. A much better representation of their live work than Stop Making Sense IMO. You should check that out if you don't have it. Thanks for the recommendation. I will check it out. I need to rebuild my Heads collection, used to have it all on vinyl. Fear of Music was another of my Talking Heads favorites.
  19. Pink Floyd - Animals- I had this one on 8-track ( along with Black Sabbath- Paranoid and Zeppelin 1) to begin with at the age of 9 or 10 or so. It s probably not the most wholesome music for a young lad to listen to but such was the case...still my favorite floyd to this day. Fly by night- another 8 track and I think my first Rush ablum at 9 or 10. I started thinking this was cool. alot of the long hair burn outs in my section of suburbia in Buffalo NY were big into Rush as I was impressed.....seemed like some good deviant music. All the worlds astage- on vinyl, i remember being happy that it was recorded on my birthday, June 11th. I was hooked on Rush now. Hemispheres- red vinyl version, from my first ( for lack of a better term, girlfriend) Listening to circumstances repeatedly. Fear -The Record- "The" punk record of all time for me. vulgarity like I had never heard and I liked it. Lynyrd Skynyrd- Second Helping ( ar any of them) I love skynyrd, many people scoff when you saw how great and meaningful their lyrics are but they ring true with me. Signals- moved from NY to NC. My ass had been detached and subdivided. Charlie Daniels Band- Nightrider. Rock/Country/Attitiude/Beauty awesome record. talking heads remain in light- holy shit! a college favorite as was the Tom tom club. Rick James Greatest hits- a true genius and another college favorite. Steel Pulse- True Democracy- fancying myself a white rastafarian/hippy during my college days i listened to a lot of reggae, this ithe best of the best IMO. Public Enemy- It takes a Nation of Million of hold us back. Got into PE after learning that Vernon Reid played on their first disc. I saw it takes a Nation of Millions tour.... groundbreaking disc in my estimation. Steely Dan- Katy Lied- crazy music for crazy people. me like. like the one below, therapeutic. Megadeth-so far, so good, so what?- In my darkest hour helped me through mine. If you know, you know. saw this tour as well. Steve Vai- Passion and Warfare- the man. end of discusssion IMO. Dream Theater- Images and Words. I recall watching headbangers ball and I think it was "take the time" came on and I was like finally! Ozric Tentacles- Arboresesence. Had this disc given to me, i listened and liked it. Later i drove three hours down to Boulder Co, and about 30 seconds into the show my jaw was on the ground!! I could not believe what I was witnesssing. Crazy world beats mingled with techno keyboards and heavy metal guitar work. It was like nothing i had ever seen. If you like insane instrumental music, check them out. I think i will stop now...............
  20. I'd check it out. I am pretty sure Borat is one of the charcters from the Ali G show on HBO. Some wickedly funny stuff.

  22. QUOTE (Storm Shadow @ Aug 7 2006, 08:37 PM) QUOTE (tangdog @ Aug 7 2006, 01:31 PM)QUOTE (2hi @ Aug 7 2006, 10:32 AM) Didn't Flav used to have a high degree of credibility as an artist? I mean Public Enemy goes down as one of the most influential rap/hip hop bands of all time. I wonder how Chuck D feels about the way Flav has gone and made a huge idiot of himself and disgraced the PE legacy. But I find the show hilarious nonetheless. I am not sure if Flav is disgracing the PE Legacy, because thats the way he has been since day one in my estimation. Chuck D was/is the real voice for the group and just about anything serious was said by Chuck D, Flavor was just that, Flavor and typically funny and/or nonsensical. Chuck D doesn't approve of these shows. He even issued an apology to their fans when Strange Love was on. "Together, [Public Enemy] make music and are dedicated to spreading the good word around the planet," Chuck D, who first protested the show in a January Web post, writes in the apology. "I would be lying if I said that the side of Flav shown on Strange Love doesn't affect what I've wanted our collective to stand for because it does, and many have told us how deeply they are bothered by this." I guess I stand corrected? I cruised the PE site and did not see any uproar about it. Maybe Chuck Was pissed that Flav was boning Brigette?
  23. QUOTE (Jack Aubrey @ Aug 7 2006, 02:41 PM) Flava Flav is a disgusting, subhuman pig who should not be a celebrity, but a registered sex offender. That seems a little harsh.

QUOTE (Storm Shadow @ Aug 7 2006, 02:36 PM) QUOTE (JohnnyBlaze @ Aug 6 2006, 07:56 PM) QUOTE (Storm Shadow @ Aug 7 2006, 08:18 AM)I don't think there was a time in 1998 when I was wasn't stoned. My history teacher called me "Captain America" one time. I still don't get it. Maybe it was a reference to Fonda in EASY RIDER . His character in that flick has sometimes been referred to as Captain America. That's the only drug related movie that I can think of with any connection to Cap. Hmm, maybe you've solved the mystery! I'm still betting it's one of those things old people say that just doesn't make sense though. well, if you have blue eyes, mystery solved. if not, they partially understood the joke.
