  1. QUOTE (Gompers @ Nov 21 2006, 04:55 PM) I gave the new Spock's Beard a listen. The first cut sounds almost exactly like their old stuff. After that, it is still a solid album. I need to give it a few more listens. I was disappointed in the lack of flashy odd meter stuff. I had hoped for more. Cool, I had forgotten about this release. Might have to track it down tomorrow.
  2. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Nov 21 2006, 02:02 AM) i watched the apology which was kind of sad, but i did not watch the incident itself, nor i doubt will i. reading it was bad enough, i don't need to see it too. how fast does it take to ruin a career? apparently 3 minutes... Its was bad enough to read it but I finally saw the video last night and its so much worse to see on film. Really hateful.
  3. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Nov 21 2006, 11:49 AM) You know, I think there actually is a positive thing we can take from this situation. Look at the enormous backlash against Mel Gibson for his tirade, and against Michael Richards for his. One could use it as examples of how far we've come as a country towards intolerance against prejudice and racism. The fact that this kind of talk and behavior is so abhorred shows that we've become a more tolerant and accepting nation, especially when compared to the not too distant past. We still have a tremdously long way to go, but at least it's indicative of progress. Mind you, I'd rather neither event had happened, but sometimes you can most easily see the positive by contrasting it with the negative. Thats a very good point.
  4. QUOTE (BigG @ Nov 21 2006, 08:03 AM) Geek fact: The drummer on Afterswish went on to become a top funk drummer playing with Jamiroqui. I love hearing how great he was on pure natural talent before becoming the polished pro I'd forgotten that. Merv Pepler and Joie Hinton formed a group called "Eat Static" after leaving the tentacles. Ed Wynne and Joie Hinton also have a project called Nodens Ictus which is entirely ambient. Several ex-members of the Tentacles have formed a group called Dream Machine. The songs I've heard on myspace and youtube seem promising. heres a link to the Dream Maching myspace page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=74814570
  5. QUOTE (The Rocinante @ Nov 20 2006, 09:31 PM) QUOTE (tangdog @ Nov 20 2006, 02:08 PM) When I hear all this nonsense about their wedding I have only one thing to say: Remember the episode on the Simpsons when Troy McClure marries Selma? Thanks and I am glad someone got the somewhat obscure Simpsons reference. First off RIP in Phil Hartman, he was a true comdic genius. To those unfamiliar with that episode, Troy McClure is a movie star who in an attempt to mask his homosexuality marries Selma as a way to prove he is not gay.
  6. QUOTE (Rush! @ Nov 20 2006, 08:50 PM) Just listening to Coily now. Amazing. Hey Tangdog, what in your opinion is their best album? Also, what's their best album in terms of the style of playing on Coily or Chewier. Some real funky albums with nice chops will do it for me. Really glad you like it! Well the Tentacles have been through at least 3 major line-up changes over the years. The only original memeber left now is Ed Wynne. Its hard to describe anyone disc because all of theirs have to a certain extent some very mellow tunes, some funky upbeat material and some unbelievably heavy guitar riffs. In certain instances the music is quite ethnical in terms of a middle eastern, reggae or Indian music feel. Sorry to be so confusing but really each disc is a mixed bag. Coily is from "Waterfall Cities" and Chewier is from "Spirals in Hyperspace" and are both newer discs. They are both recommended as is a another modern disc entitled "The Hidden Step". Their newest disc is called "The floor is too far away" is quite good but I would recommend the others first. These discs are from 1999 to present. In the mid 90's Standouts IMO include "Become the Other" and "Arborescence" and "Curious Corn" Also from this era is "Jurrassic Shift" which I think is their most commercially sucessful disc. I like Jurassic Shift but not to the extent of the others. In terms of their earliest music, I would start with "Erpland" or "Pungent Effulgent" . Alot of people think Erpland is their best overall disc and its included on a lot of lists of all time best progressive discs. Get Erpland if you can find it. If you like the upbeat tech- heavy stuff, send me your email and I will gladly fire off a sampler to you of some of their material in that vein. Its hard to believe but the Tentacles basically let the official webpage www.ozrics.com shrivel up and die. I can't figure out why. The best Tentacles page is a fan site maintained by a fan named Mike Werning and theres a link below to his page. Hope this helps and checkout this webpage link for more info if interested. http://www.geocities.com/ozrictentacles_web/

  8. QUOTE (Jack Aubrey @ Nov 20 2006, 11:55 AM) A drunk man's words are a sober man's thoughts. Very nice summary Jack! Man, thats deep and all too true. Talk about shameful behavior. He deserves any and all the grief he is going get for his words.

QUOTE (Larks @ Nov 19 2006, 04:32 PM) They are insane live! write "MAGMA MDK" on youtube and see for yourself... the singer is yelling and running all over, the drummer is on a really strong trip and the opera singers are just amazing.. 11. QUOTE (Larks @ Nov 19 2006, 04:14 PM) Ive seen them live half a year ago.. damn that was amazing! i went to the show not knowing any songs and i was amazed by their huge talent(most of the crowd were 50-60 years old hippies lol) Most excellent. I saw that they played in Israel. Is that where you saw them? I was like you more or less. I was only kinda familiar with one disc when I saw them the first time. I did not recoginze a single song played but it blew my mind. I felt like I stepped back in time.........
  12. I catch parts of his TV show occasionally. Some his stuff is really impresive. I think once he was at the top of a skyscraper ( may have been a cliff) and he was leaning out in a way that made me real nervous just to watch it.
  13. QUOTE (The Rocinante @ Nov 15 2006, 10:37 PM) I got Octavarium...I'm not too impressed... Train of Thought was SO much better Train of Thought was certainly much heavier. Give it a few more listens, hopefully it will grow on you.
  14. QUOTE (tangdog @ Nov 9 2006, 08:24 AM) Lynryd Skynyrd- Was I right or wrong? (Gary Rossington - Ronnie Van Zant) Like a restless leaf in the autumn breeze Once I was a tumblin' weed Like a rollin' stone, cold and all alone Living for the day my train would come I never cared for school or any golden rules Papa used to always say I was a useless fool So I left my home to show them thay was wrong And headed out on the road singing my song Then one sunny day. The man, he looked my way And everything that I dreamed of, it was real Money, girls and cars; and big long cigars And I caught the first plane home so papa would see When I went home to show 'em they was wrong All that I found was two tombstones Somebody tell me please was I right or wrong Oh, such a sad song First I got lost, then I got found But the ones that I love are in the ground Papa I only wish you could see me now Take a listen papa Whoo, I learnt how to play my guitar Gonna be a superstar First I got lost, then I got found The ones I love are in the ground Won't you tell me please was I right or wrong If there's any way you can hear what I say Papa, I never meant to do you wrong All the money, girls and cars. And all the world's long cigars Papa, I just want you to know they couldn't take your place When I went home to show 'em they was wrong All that I found was two tombstones Somebody tell me please was I right or wrong Oh, such a sad song First I got lost, then I got found But the ones that I love are in the ground Somebody tell me please was I right or wrong
  15. QUOTE (Modest Man From Mandrake @ Nov 9 2006, 05:39 PM) Wow I have never heard of these guys but they are great! Thanks for sharing. Thanks for checking them out! Glad you liked it! Here a link to some studio material. Feng Shui shows the more ambient side of Ozric Tentacles, while Coily is more upbeat and techno. Ozrics at Prog Archives

I hope to catch it this weekend. I've caught most of the Ali G shows and Borat is by far his best character IMO. "Your house, I Sh*t immediately"
