  1. If the book disappointed you, I recommend reading Candide and then listening to the album...repeat as necessary The themes in the song lyrics are explored very well in Candide, but (to me, at least) they fit the songs well. I listened to the album before I read Candide, and reading it made the album just a bit more exciting than it already was. Honestly, there's no need for there to be a book in the first place. It's Candide with some events slightly altered (shipwreck because of a storm becomes a shipwreck because of islanders with a lighthouse, meeting the critic and prostitutes in Europe becomes the carnival sequence, getting lost in the desert and finding el dorado becomes...getting lost in the desert and finding el dorado, settling in the garden etc). It would almost be more artistically credible to release the album with a copy of Candide in it (or a coupon?). Not to dump on Neil, though - it's good to try new things, and this definitely introduced me to one of my favourite pieces of literature.
  2. Steven Wilson should remaster Vapor Trails and then work on every future Rush album. If only there were some way to force him..
  3. QUOTE (afortaleza @ Jul 18 2012, 03:27 PM) Some time ago I wrote (badly written by the way) a text called "A quick take on Rush lyrics", it's here: http://afortaleza.blogspot.com.br/2011/06/...shs-lyrics.html The original idea was to analyze all Rush's lyrics album by album, but then I didn't have the time but the core is there in this quick post. I'll stop an listen to this album following the lyrics and will post here my impressions. It's not of any surprise that Neail Peart has in the "enlightenment" authors a great source of inspiration and I dont think this album will be any different. I was very dissapointed when, on S&A I saw him moving towards the Richard Dawkins' style of victimized and activist atheism. It's not about atheism itself but about the poorness of the neo-atheism arguments and mindset, I expected something better from a classic's reading guy like him. Let's see what this album has to offer. It's important to keep in mind that a lot of the writing on S&A (and even Vapor Trails) was done at a time when the whole world (atheist or otherwise) was suffering because of religious violence and its results (i.e. 9/11 attacks, iraq/afghanistan wars...) There's nothing worse than a born-again atheist, but I think overall Neil is moreso an everday, regular secular humanist. Unfortunately, in 2012 that means being part of the marketing machine of Richard Dawkins, Bill Maher, Neil DeGrasse-Tyson etc. The anti-religious/anti-fatalist themes in Clockwork Angels are largely dedicated to mimicking Candide. It's not that Rush is a purely anti-religious band (Totem comes to mind), but it would definitely be nice to see a focus on human issues without a connection to christianity (a lot of the really old albums like Hemispheres pull this off nicely).
  4. This thread is for tabs of clockwork angels songs, not making fun of some dude!
  5. I think when he says 'uncertain ends' in Freewill he means 'uncertain outcomes' (as opposed to the predestiny/fatalism in some religions)...not telomeres
  6. QUOTE (LeaveMyThingAlone @ Jul 14 2012, 07:06 PM) 4. Is the Anarchist being told from the "hero's" point of view or The Anarchist's? 5. In Carnies, Neil/Geddy goes from 3rd person to 1st person. "A Spectacle like he's never seen" Who is "HE"? Then to 1st person with "How I prayed just to get away". Who is "I"? Re: the anarchist - the song is partly the anarchist describing himself, his motives etc, and partly the narrator describing the scene where he throws the bomb to the protagonist (who is then mobbed) Re: carnies - the song is partly describing the protagonist's feelings as he wanders the carnival, and partly the narrator describing that from third person
  7. As hilarious as that hemispheres clip was, I'd rather you guys just transcribe the rest of the songs from Clockwork Angels that haven't been done yet (and/or fix my seven cities of gold chords). gogogo!
  8. So, where's the Carnies transcription? Somebody get on it! I'm too much of a hack.
  9. Instead of getting hung up on trolls, transcribe more of the album (after learning it by ear)! Feel free to write sheet music instead of tabs so that nitpicky people don't get mad.
  10. QUOTE (spock @ Jul 10 2012, 07:39 PM) QUOTE (theredtamasrule @ Jul 10 2012, 07:13 PM) QUOTE (HowItIs @ Jul 10 2012, 05:40 PM)Thanks for that clarification. Yes, those experiences have certainly colored Neil's views, there can be no way they would not. I try not to be Neil's psychoanalyst when listening to his lyrics. However, when on BU2B there is the line: The price of what we're winning / is the same as what we've lost I can't help but to think of his situation; lost his wife and daughter now he has a wife and daughter. I don't know or try to infer he means that overtly but it's there in my interpretation. Oh, and the Anarchist just f***ing kills. Great song. The price of what we're winning... That line has had me scratching my head since I heard it. You might be right (I can't think of another explanation), but it's an odd line in an otherwise straightforward song... The protagonist realizes that, for every positive thing he experiences under the Watchmaker's rule, something else is 'lost' (i.e., the motivation for the story is his wanting to leave the ordered, peaceful but uneventful life he has been brought up with).
  11. I would like all of them a lot more if they were mixed by whoever worked on the albums before Vapor Trails
  12. Seriously though, I could write the whole tab I made out as sheet music, but I didn't. I know tabs are a more universal format online for guitar transcriptions, so it's a better way to give back to the community (after years of leeching), and to get feedback on it. I didn't make my tab by being a hack. I made it by being halfway decent. I learned it by ear and then wrote it down. UltimoGuitarist, could you transcribe 'Carnies' for me and post the sheet music somewhere? I'd appreciate it, pal
  13. QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Jul 4 2012, 09:06 AM) QUOTE (Gilbertk @ Jul 3 2012, 12:03 PM) TAB ROUNDUP -------Guitar----------------- Seven Cities of Gold http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/r/rush/sev...of_gold_tab.htm Lots of errors in that one, and they were ones I expected to see. I'll post a more accurate tab a little later. I haven't looked at the other songs yet. EDIT: I just saw his disclaimer that it's "a first draft, and some of the chords aren't quite right." Any news on this? That tab is mine and I still haven't gone back to figure out a few places. I saw another version on someone's blog, but I haven't been able to find it again.. edit: ah, here it is
