  1. Caress of Steel was written almost entirely under the influence, according to the band (probably why it's so sloppy), and "A Passage to Bangkok" is about traveling the world to get different drugs. I think that they stopped after the '70s, though.
  2. QUOTE (Ancient Ways @ Jul 3 2011, 07:37 AM) The Trees was a prog rock radio hit? Maybe he was thinking of "Closer to the Heart".
  3. QUOTE (Tommy Sawyer @ Jul 1 2011, 06:32 PM) QUOTE (StellarJetman @ Jul 1 2011, 06:03 PM) Moving Pictures. I'd prefer Permanent Waves, though, if "Jacob's Ladder" had two (good) shorter tracks in its place. This. I can't believe this; I have the same taste in music as a Test for Echo fan. http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-psyboom.gif

  6. QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Jul 1 2011, 08:06 AM) QUOTE (StellarJetman @ Jul 1 2011, 10:04 AM)Why do you imply that he only hates the album because he somehow wants to I didn't say that. My point was that throwing around phrases like "pre-conceived hatred" and "made up your mind" paints his dislike as an end in itself.
  7. QUOTE (Analog_Bro @ Jun 27 2011, 09:44 PM)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj-LMNiAWnM ^^^This is the way they played Anthem in 1991. I personally like the way Geddy sings it here Not a fan at all. As RobW mentioned earlier, detuning takes all of the "Anthem"-ness out of it. It really only works with Geddy's earlier stratospheric range. QUOTE (Silas Lang @ Jun 30 2011, 01:04 AM)love the long drawn out way he belts out "wroooong!" "wroooought!" Fixed.
  8. QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Jul 1 2011, 07:34 AM) My post did absolutely NOTHING to change your pre-conceived hatred of the album. You had made up your mind before you even posted your opinion. Why do you imply that he only hates the album because he somehow wants to? And if he's afraid of developing a kind of Stockholm Syndrome - not that it would necessarily be that - for Test for Echo with repeated listens after reading your post, it's perfectly fine, and you really shouldn't have a problem with it.
  9. QUOTE (RUSHHEAD666 @ Jun 30 2011, 11:57 PM) I really don't understand all the hype about John. For what it's worth, I was only joking when I mentioned him. I haven't even heard a Dream Theater song in my life.
  10. 1. Hemispheres 2. Presto 3. Power Windows 4. Moving Pictures 5. Grace Under Pressure
  11. Hemispheres (heavy progressive rock), Presto (interesting, veers all over the place between progressive rock and pop), and Power Windows (the most '80s thing that they ever did).
  12. QUOTE (pedro2112 @ Jun 30 2011, 10:33 PM) Because, from an objective standpoint, it is the worst song off of both albums. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VKnlNvwbGMM/S__trtnHHhI/AAAAAAAABbI/SOjCTBr8gok/s400/Inigo.jpg The quality of that song hinges entirely on whether the brilliant chorus outweighs the meandering verses and drawn-out non-ending. Which is subjective.
  13. QUOTE (metaldad @ Jun 27 2011, 02:44 PM) QUOTE (rushlady23 @ Jun 24 2011, 07:36 AM) As long as the music is good, does it matter what the cover looks like? Not one bit And, given the band in question...
  14. Oh, give me a break, people.
  15. I remember reading that they had found a box of old tapes with some of those recorded on them, and that they were planning on cleaning them up and releasing them at some point in the future.
  16. I really don't think that this is the "real" cover. Bands often release singles with different covers from their albums, and this one has been around for quite a while. I'd be surprised if they didn't roll out a new one for the album proper. QUOTE (trenken @ Jun 24 2011, 09:34 PM) Wikipedia is irrelevant. That's the cover the band released. That's not some photoshopped pic by a fan. This, on the other hand...
  17. QUOTE (Kenneth @ Jun 21 2011, 11:28 PM) I noticed that too.. What do the numerals represent anyway? Some sort of cult? Here's a hint: Which number is most associated with Rush?
  18. QUOTE (tangy @ Jun 21 2011, 10:51 AM)IMO the keyboard period ushered in the age of "filler" for rush in part because of the new technology allowing longer recordings. I tried to draw a line between tracks that I actively disliked and tracks that I simply didn't like. If not for that, Signals, Hold Your Fire, and Snakes and Arrows would have had much stronger representation. QUOTE (tangy @ Jun 21 2011, 10:51 AM)i personally don't have any tracks i think should of been left out until GUP. Sure there are few tunes that are a little clunky today like Rivendell but consider when it was recorded and that freaked out tolkienesque songs were pretty common back then. I don't mind the subject matter (even Led Zeppelin got into that kind of thing pretty heavily); it's just a boring, pointless song for me.
  19. From that other thread: QUOTE (RushNut @ Jun 21 2011, 07:06 AM)QUOTE (Good @ bad, andrush,Jun 21 2011, 09:02 AM) QUOTE (JohnnyBlaze @ Jun 21 2011, 07:58 AM) QUOTE (Ancient Ways @ Jun 21 2011, 09:57 PM) QUOTE (Sir Lerxst @ Jun 21 2011, 08:38 AM) I can think of a track from every album, which I don't think should have made the cut. I would love to see that list... imho: Rivendell, Speed of Love, YBYL...after that I have to think. I'll have a go at this... This deserves a separate thread So, yeah, here's the separate thread. I'll start: Fly by Night: "Rivendell", "Best I Can" Caress of Steel: "I Think I'm Going Bald" 2112: "A Passage to Bangkok" (I know that I'm going to be crucified for this one.) A Farewell to Kings: Everything after "Xanadu" (I just hate that album. Sorry!) Hemispheres: Nothing much, really, although the title track could have used a lot more work. Permanent Waves: "Jacob's Ladder", the "Permanent Waves" section of "Natural Science" Moving Pictures: "Witch Hunt" (Too annoyingly preachy, I'm afraid.) Signals: "Countdown", not so much because it's weak (I don't much care for most of the songs on Signals, actually), but because it's weak and keeps the album going after "Losing It", which would have been a perfect finale. Grace Under Pressure: "The Body Electric" Power Windows: "Marathon", possibly "Emotion Detector" Hold Your Fire: "Second Nature", "Tai Shan" Presto: "Scars", possibly "Anagram", "Hand Over Fist" Roll the Bones: The rap, "Where's My Thing?", "Neurotica", "You Bet Your Life" Counterparts: The stupid "noir" monologues, "Stick It Out", "The Speed of Love", possibly "Everyday Glory" Test for Echo: "Half the World", "Time and Motion", "Totem", "Dog Years", possibly "Resist", "Carve Away the Stone" Vapor Trails: "Out of the Cradle", because, like "Countdown", it's an incredibly weak ending that comes right after what would have been a proper finale. I'd probably put it on this list regardless of its placement, though. Snakes and Arrows: "Faithless", because Neil's preachiness is even more annoying when it doesn't have a good tune to back it up. Flame away, people!
  20. I'm surprised that "A Farewell to Kings" has so many votes, especially given that it's up against the 2112 intro. It's not a bad song, but it isn't all that great, either.
  21. My half-sister's aunt's brother-in-law's nephew's friend's sister's husband's cousin might have seen a picture of Terry Brown once.
