Mustard Death
QUOTE (kazzman @ Feb 10 2006, 10:38 PM) QUOTE (Mustard Death @ Feb 10 2006, 09:33 PM) QUOTE (kazzman @ Feb 10 2006, 10:29 PM) QUOTE (Mustard Death @ Feb 10 2006, 09:02 PM) Hey Kazz, are you familiar with metal drummer Derek Roddy at all? I've heard of him, but haven't heard anything from him to my knowledge. I probably have though, but didn't know it was him. Well, he's a renowned Death Metal drummer... he plays his blast beats with one foot, which is pretty awesome, in my opinion. He's also known as "one-take Roddy", because he can usually do session work in a very short amount of time. He was on a Nile album... I can't remember which one. He's also playing on Ron Jarzombek's new instrumental Death Metal project "Machinations of Dementia". Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) is playing bass. Ok, I know who you're talking about now. Have you heard Nile's current drummer? George Kollias? Not as good as Roddy, but the guy's got some speed behind him. Now I need to train myself to play blast beats with one foot... I've heard a song or two from Nile's new album, and from what I remember, he was pretty good. Unfortunately, I don't own any Nile... (yet) I'd be happy if I could play blast beats at all one day

rushgoober
I generally tend to focus more upon groups and albums in general than on specific musicians within a group, and I generally only know the names of the individual musicians for groups that are amongst my absolute very favorite groups or ones that are so well known on their own that I couldn't escape knowing who they are. Only a handful of musicians therefore really stand out to me on their own as being above the crowd. Guitar: Jimi Hendrix is God of the Guitar - there's just no two ways around it, anyone, and I mean ANYONE pales next to him. We had a Mozart or a Beethoven in our midst when he was around, and even though his prime period stuff lasted 3-4 years, he completely recreated the instrument and influenced millions in the process. He was out of this world. Outside of Hendrix, I also love and admire: Alex Lifeson (Rush) Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane) David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen) Terry Brooks (Terry Brooks & Strange) Eric Clapton (Cream, Blind Faith) Bass: There aren't any bassists, save one that really super stands out to me other than Geddy. I know there are tons of great ones, I just don't know their names. For me the bass has to REALLY stand out for me to take notice of it. Chris Squire of Yes plays bass like it's a guitar, and he's completely brilliant. I also love Bill Laswell. Drums: Neil Peart is the God of drums, at least as far as rock music is concerned, but the other two that to me are huge are John Bonham and Alex Van Halen. Alex Van Halen always played the drums so loud and powerfully - I always listen for him whenever I hear a Van Halen song - it makes a lot of the songs, and while Eddie gets tons of credit, I think Alex deserves more too. I also love the combination of Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann in the Grateful Dead, Elvin Jones in the jazz world and Alla Rakha in the Indian music world - amazing all. There are a LOT of albums I love where the group only made one or two albums and where there's great musicianship, but I never bothered to learn the names of the individual members. Also, I'm not a musician. If I was, I'd probably know a lot more musicians names. As I said before, it's usually all about the group as a whole and albums as a whole for me...
