1. Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull
- too much flute, garbage

2. Close To The Edge - Yes
- genius... the definitive prog album

3. Selling England By The Pound - Genesis
- top form, unyieldingly good

5. Foxtrot - Genesis
- a dynamic monster

6. In The Court Of The Crimson King - King Crimson
- name- dropped and over-rated

9. Red - King Crimson
- good lord did they need Adrian Belew

10. Godbluff - Van Der Graaf Generator
- hippies are bad enough, but drunk hippies?

14. Io Sono Nato Libero - Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso
- no one but members of Prog Archives and the band members themselves have ever listened to these albums

15. Nursery Cryme - Genesis
- the yin to Foxtrot's yang - worthy

16. Moving Pictures - Rush
- top album, not prog though

18. Fragile - Yes
- a fantastic EP only

21. Ommadawn - Mike Oldfield
-yeah... right wink.gif

22. Larks' Tongues In Aspic - King Crimson
- I'd rather listen to Tony Levin taking photographs

23. Storia Di Un Minuto - Premiata Forneria Marconi
- please stop

24. Moonmadness - Camel
- cutout bin

25. Crime of the Century - Supertramp
- if this is to be considered prog, then Breakfast In America should be considered prog (and therefore would be the better inclusion)

Agreed heavily on those points.

It is one thing to be Progressive, but that is never an excuse for losing your sense of melody.

The comment about 14. Io Sono Nato Libero? Friggin' hilarious! z7shysterical.gif

'Red' should be number 8. It's way better than Floyd's 'Animals'.

Not to me. I love Animals, but also Red. That being said, Animals gets the edge for more plays on my MP3 player. I also think Animals is the most Progressive PF ever was.

there's a fine line between being 'creatively inspired' and 'collectively retarded' when it comes to chemical influences as applied to music-making

both VDGG and Tull crossed the line (for the worse) multiple times

as such, both are effortlessly dismissable

I have tried repeatedly to get into VDGG. Like Camel, no can do. PFM is also one of those, but this is because I can't open my mind to foreign lyrics.

What bums me out is that there is no Anekdoten (either releases Vemod or Nucleus). I prefer these guys over similar sounding Anglagard. I think they have a Crimson depth to them sonically and there is good reason. KC was an influence. They write some 'thick' music. For you guys who don't know them, here is a good example of what they do:

Dismissable by whom? You? And who are you exactly?

why, I'm me! wink.gif

I'm sure no one is genuinely upset by my one-liners (that's all they are)

a brusque but (personally) honest review of that Top 25 is truly all that it is

now

> to those who would assume my reviews belie youth?

I was already in high school when p/g was released, so there's no traction there

> to those who would assume my reviews belie ignorance of the genre?

piffle - my 1940's to 1980's collection of prog/indie/psych/fusion/jazz/electronic LP's alone wouldn't fit in an empty VW bus

> and to those who largely agree with my assessments?

well, obviously you have impeccable taste trink39.gif

The only recent(ish) release is Anglagard's Hybris....surprised Misplaced Childhood or Script didn't make the list, or Scenes From A Memory(without wanting to open up the "IS PROG METAL PROG" scab or anything........)

friend, if you think it's in 'bad taste' to herald these albums:

Close To The Edge - Yes

Selling England By The Pound - Genesis

Foxtrot - Genesis

Birds of Fire - Mahavishnu Orchestra

- you've unequivocally proved you have none

...but don't despair - enlightenment awaits! th1245.gif

Yeah, it seems like that at least one disc from say Porcupine Tree, Spocks Beard or Dream Theater would of made the list. Something more modern.

I personally think Spocks Beard and PT rank up there with the best prog ever.

Considering that he's been listening to that album longer than you've been on this planet, I think he's had time to be "enlightened".

It all comes down to personal tastes, and you two don't agree. Don't lose any sleep over it.
