I listened to them and I can tell you that it has nothing to do with smoking or the range he's trying to sing in. In most clips it sounds like his voice is very tired. I would imagine a few dates into a tour it becomes a strain for him because he's not a singer and probably doesn't do any kind of vocal warm-ups before a show. Your voice is a muscle and if you're going to sing every night, you have to exercise it and warm it up just like an athlete would before a game. That's why in so many of the pictures we've seen of him singing, it looks like he's struggling. He actually is and when you're forcing your vocal chords like that it becomes difficult to control and stay in key. One other thing to keep in mind is that harmonies played by themselves sometimes sound terrible, mainly because you can't hear the melody it's meant to back up. That really isn't the case in these clips, but with the isolated clips on mita's site. Play any of those clips along with the studio track and it will blend perfectly, at least the few that I tried it with did. I do realize that I'm extremely biased where Alex is concerned, so most likely I would stick up for him no matter what. He's not a great singer by conventional definition, but some of my favorite singers would also fall into that category so that holds little weight with me. Why he didn't sing on Victor is beyond me, but if he ever does put out Victor II (please please please!), he should strongly consider doing some actual singing versus spoken word. I definitely wish Alex would experiment again and put out solo material. He has talked about it in the past but he's also mentioned being creatively drained and not exactly needing to do another Victor. I think with Victor he said he had been wanting to do that for a long time. I would love for Alex to release his own material. His own songs, his own voice. I just want to hear it.
