Choose/the/light Posted April 12, 2008 Share Posted April 12, 2008 So I know that they sold the Moogs a while back, and they are sampling stuff now, but what foot pedals are they using these days? And how might one obtain one? I saw on a pic of Geddy's foot pedals it was a Korg MPK-180 or something, but I googled it and got nada. Help? rayzray Posted April 12, 2008 Share Posted April 12, 2008 (edited) having used foot pedals for years - like - since late 1970's - the first ones IMO only played bass sounds - like the ones they used to install in the Hammonds - to simulate "String Bass" then i bought the self contained one - (of course the names are eluding me ) then with the invention of MIDI - many foot pedals just started being MIDI triggers that play sounds off another sound module - bass or what ever - basically - ANY sound - samaples or tone generated - there were push switches that you could go between sound and MINI operations - like changing MIDI channels and functions - yes - the Pedals could also be used - i think - to change the whole sound maps of the keyboards - but _IMO - Getty mainly used the bass sound - and holding one bass note as he switched to playing the keyboards/synths with his hands- it carried him through the keyboard "Riffs' not solos - i never considered him a virtuoso on keyboards - he just "riffs" and holds syhthetic chords - he was good at it - and they were great - but - watch out Rush - Muse is on your tail - Edited April 12, 2008 by rayzray Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

What sucks is the real thing (Which is obviously what it's all about!) such as Moog Taurus is very expensive and the cheaper alternative is Midi powered. I personally hate Midi, I wouldn't want to have to take my laptop to gigs/practise sessions with a band anyway, which would be required to power these things. Modern equipment sucks. Anyway if I didn't put you off have a look on Ebay for "Bass pedals" "Foot bass" "Synth bass pedals" etc. You'll find some vintage and newer stuff but good luck on finding any for a price you're willing to pay. He has two foot pedal keyboards triggering Roland XV-5080 samplers. The one at the other mic are Korg midi pedals which would be MPK-130, also used by Alex. I tried, I failed. Midi was actually developed as a data communication system for synths (and other electronic musical devices). You don't need to involve a laptop, PC or Mac at any point in the process if you don't want to and you certainly don't need to for rehearsals and live performance. The Moog Taurus pedals will only give you Moog Taurus sounds (although Rush did eventually have theirs altered to communicate with their Oberheims). They are notoriously unreliable. To be honest, it's much easier to get a good quality Midi controller and a decent sampler/synth (such as the Roland Fantoms or 5080s that Rush use). I don't think those Korgs are a current production model as when I used that model it was in the mid to late 80s. The Rolands are still in production and 100% reliable (and built like tanks). In the 80s Hammond/Suzuki made the Midi-Step which had functionality that resembles the XPK 100 but had been discontinued. It is a bit more advanced than the Roland. I looked for a Midi-Step for years before landing on the Roland. There is excellent functionality with the Hammond looking through the manual.
