Anyone else a fan of the Indy 500?

For me it started when I was 6 years old. My dad took me to my first race and I was instantly hooked.

Since then I have been to Indy over 22 times. Mostly for the 500 but I have also seen F1 and nascar race there.

I won't be attending this years 500 but I will be at next months F1 race.

My uncle's best friend and next door neighbor was mike mosely who raced indy in the 70's - Real nice guy. The following video shows his crash in 72' (little past the 2 minute mark) where he burned and broke one of his legs -

Also Swede Savage's father was our vetinarian - Savage died in a horrible crash in the 73' indy 500 where his car went up in flames he died 33 days later, sadly one of his pit crew died also when he ran out to help savage he was hit by the fire truck and killed instantly -

I'm an Indy fan, and a Tony George hater. I have been to about 8 500's since 1995. I won't be going this year. I'm going to check out the Brickyard 400 instead. I still prefer open wheel to Nascar, but I want to check out a Nascar race.

Here is a pretty cool article from ESPN about how the Indy could restore it's self.

I thought it was a great race despite the rain. 20+ lead changes, good speeds, pit issues, some very close racing. A few times I thought someone was going to hit the attenuator while passing down the front straight. Great racing!!

I was also glad to see Dario win his first.

alphseeker: That '73 race was my first time to Indy. It was a horrible weekend that I still remember like it was yesterday (I was only 6 yrs old). 4 people total were killed that weekend (it was a 3 day race because of rain and crashes). Art Pollard was killed on pole day, then Salt Walther was killed on the first race day when his car ripped through the fence and also injured/burned 20+ fans. We were sitting high in turn 1 that weekend and could see the entire event unfold. That was the first but not the last time I would see someone die on the racetrack.
