Stupid Queston: Virtual Memory

Yeah but why all of a sudden? Were you doing anything major memory intensive like editing a huge bitmap image or something? Why would it even be needing to use your Virtual Memory? I wasn't doing anything at all today when I got my error. And yes, I am running XP - XP Home at work and XP Pro at home.

I also do rgeular checks on viruses and worms, but if it isn't detected by the virus software people yet (like a real new virus as of today), then virus scan doesn't do anything.

It zipped by REAL fast and booted up. It gave me a window once it did boot up that said "The system has recovered from a serious error" I clicked on the details and tried to copy it so I could post it here, but it was a very long series of letters and numbers. But since it said it "has recovered" I think it helped. I gotta go to my son's football game now, but I'll check back later.

Thank you for the help, Barney, Riv. If there is anything else I should do please post and I'll check back later.

Actually that's not good man, that almost sounds like you have a bad RAM stick. I would get those messages until I replaced one of my sticks. Do you crash with Stop errors (blue screens) often?

No, no crashes. Actually, the "virtual memory" message has been coming up for about a month now and it hasn't really caused a problem that I can tell. Like I said, no crashes, very occasional freeze up and that's about it. I plan on upgrading my RAM anyway, and Riv's earlier comment has me thinking I should just go ahead and put in 2 sticks of 512 and be done with it. Virus defs updated 12/2/04. System scan was last friday night, scheduled again tonight. Overall, no system problems to speak of other than this "virtual memory" issue. confused13.gif Maybe I'll pop in a couple of new sticks this weekend and see what happens.

Best way to speed up your system, brother.

It definately never hurts to have more RAM. I'd take check speeds etc. RAM type before buying thiugh (lots of different brands, speeds etc that can make you overpay).

Also be sure whatever speed you get is compatible with your motherboard. And that all of the sticks are the same speed.

Ok, I've been told by my better half not to buy memory because my sister is giving me a stick of 512 for Christmas. But I want to go to 1024MB anyway. My question now is, my memory configuration is 2 banks of 1. Can I go out and buy one stick of 512 and put that in one slot for now and then plug in the other stick of 512 after Christmas? or do they have to be installed in pairs?

Yes you can, in most cases (my motherboard REQUIRED pairs but my motherboard is not the kind you can just walk into a store and buy). I would say 99% chance you can use one 512 stick then add another in the other slot. If it doesn't work, you will know on bootup - won't damage anything...

If you tell me your computer make and model, I can confirm that for you in a heartbeat.

I had to mess with the ordering and the slots when I replaced one of thje two 256MBs on my system. It was Apacer brand, which is crap. I ended up buying PC-2700 (I think). I wanted a better brand like Kingston, but they didn't have any so they gave me Samsung. You can mix and match brands and speeds, and sizes, but keep in mind it will run at the lowest speed of the slowest stick, or the maximum the motherboard can handle. Don't worry about RAM speeds, highly overrated.

I had that the same problem of getting the computer error message after I ran disk cleanup, chk disc and defrag. After I rebooted from chk disk it sdaid youre computer has recovered from an serious error. Then it ran fine. I would suggest doing updates from your provider. I did a Gateway update yesterday on a bios and my computer ran sooo much better. I too am starting to run out of space on mine. You have to do those 3 disc cleanup, disck chck and defrag very pften. At least once a week or your computer runs out of space very quick. I was down to 7% of space on my hardrive and I ran disck chck and compressed files and I ended up with 24% of space. Also when you run those make sure you have both boxes checked. Also when you do disc clean up you can pretty much get rid of everything that is on there after ir runs. I cleared up alot of space with that. Go to the library and get Windows XP for Dummies, I found some relly good information on there about cleaning up the computer. I didnt need the other stuff in it but it was helpful there. Next time though I am going to build my own computer insted of buying the whole package.

Running xp home and I'm getting the message that the "virtual memory" is low. I did a little checking and went to task manager and ended some underlying processes that were running (spysweeper, etc.) and that seemed to clear it up. If I upgrade my RAM from 256 to at least 512, that should solve the problem, correct?

Snow that is the weirdest thing because at work today the EXACT same thing happened to me and I have never had that error ever on that computer - and wasn't doing a thing out of the norm... I wonder if there is an undiscovered virus out there or something going on...

Definitely could be a worm.

I have had Norton AV current on virus defs since the day I bought the pc. I update defs at least once a week and I run system scans every week and have always come up clean. I know many aren't fans of NAV, but it seems to work ok for me. I don't think I have a worm or virus, but just in case, got any suggestions?

Norton sucks really bad, believe me.

Try Kaspersky antiviruses, like Antiviral Toolkit Pro.

Or something different but norton.

Thanks, Fuz. I'll give it a try.

Another good (and free) virus utility is AVG. I use it on all my machines now. It scans nightly, updates whenever you want it to, and it works.

AVG Antivirus

And though it is claimed that XP (home or pro) runs fine on 256mb, that's a crock. You want at least 512 to have a stable, smooth-running machine.

Or...

format and instal linux. wink.gif tongue.gif

I couldn't agree more - this is really something to listen to. These computers by Del and such that they sell with 256MB ram with WINXP is a crock - they shouldn't even be able to sell a machine with only 256MB on WINXP. XP truely requires 1/2 gig to run right. I personally never put less than 1 GIG memory in.
